now this can benefit a lot of people as in interviews we r asked a lot of ques as to wat our field of specialisation gonna be so only if we know the nuances of major specialisations, wil we b able to do justice. now this thread will enable us all to get some key terms and in depth knowledge of fields. now i know a thread was opened yesterday but that was only for operations and systems wereas i want this to cater to every stream

so i call upon all people in b schools who r doin their specialisations and all others who know about some others to contribute their knowledge here so that we all people can know wat all thgs and specialisations are for and wat we study there in top colleges so that wen we sit in the interviews , we r comfortable and can answer ques pertainin to marketing and finance and other specialisations pretty well

mods plz dun lock this as i want all info in 1 particular thread so that it would save time and space and people wont open thread for every specialisations

and yes i know this thread will progress slowly so no probs atleast itll help us all in long run

so plz contribute ur bit
thx
great job indeed. Would really help me in chosing the specialization. waiting eagerly for positive response.

Better call it Systems + Marketing . I have opted for "Systems + Marketing" (Dual specialization), although our Second year is yet to start, this is what I have learnt by working on an International Marketing project in an IT company (during my summer internship). Marketing the IT products/solutions is completely different from marketing the FMCG products. You won't need to go to each and every dealer/retailer to sell your products but you will need to understand your Software products. Although most companies have a "Sales training programme", you need to have an overall understanding of various software/platforms etc. and the Industry. This is the reason why IT companies prefer to take people with technical backgrounds for this job. You can get involved in activities like Pre-Sales, Product Development/Management, Sales etc.

If you are a Systems fan but not interested in marketing, you can opt for Systems+Finance. Other options for Systems guys: Business Analyst/Project Leader (if u have work ex)/Consultant/Domain specialist (SAP, ERP etc.) and so on.

I hope this helps in some way.
Cheers!
Anurag

Hi! I am doing my summers at Newgen Software Technologies Limited, although it is not a huge company like a Infosys or a Wipro, it is among the top ten product development companies in India. It develops Business Process Management software and has partnerships with a lot of big companies. The advantage of working in a (comparatively) small company is that you get lot more freedom and learning opportunities. I am working in the International Marketing division, doing a live project here and I get a chance to interact with companies from US, UK, China, UAE, Africa and Australia (Can't give out more details about the project, it's classified ). There are trainees from IIFT, IIM Indore, and IIT Roorkee working with me (but on separate projects).

The best thing about a software company is its work culture, life is cool. Plus you sit in an Air-Conditioned environment (which you may not get in a normal marketing job), the growth opportunities are tremendous (there are headhunters running after you, the day you join), you get a lot of Domestic and International travel opportunities plus the Pay Packets are among the Best on offer.

Finance plus Systems is a really cool combo these days and there are tremendous job opportunities. Although a word of caution (from my personal experience), Finance can be really tough to study for people like us who do not have any basic knowledge of commerce. Finance+Systems can get you a job in any of the IT companies, Consulting firms etc. In many cases, companies that come for Finance guys also require them to know how to market the products (IndiaBulls, Private sector banks are examples of this phenomenon).

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert on all this, these are my personal views. Please take expert opinions before taking the plunge

I have been a silent reader of this thread for long now and have anurag's posts have been of a huge help.
I have an inclination towards HR/Systems but I feel that's a little degrading for an engg... what say anurag? Could you throw some light on future prospects in HR/Systems.
