Need some serious advice from you guys... - 19-02-2005, 12:18 PM

I need some serious advice from you guys very urgently. My parents want me to do MBA in Pune itself as we live in Pune, unless of course I get an IIM call. I completed my B.Com in April-2004 at Hyderabad, which means that I dropped out one year to prepare myself for the various B-School exams. I wrote CAT(72%), MAT(96%), SNAP(Net score of 54) and XAT(54%). Now my parents have just moved Pune so obviously they only knew of Symbiosis. Now neighbours and friends tell us that Pune University MBA (i.e.PUMBA) is good too. I did not register for Mah.-CET. A net score of 54 wasn't good enough for SIIB and just forget about SIBM through XAT. I've got lots of calls through MAT, e.g. Alliance, Amity, etc. but my parents insist that I should do MBA in Pune only. That means I've got only the 3 Symbiosis schools and PUMBA in hand. Some people here say IIMM,Pune is good or should we say ok. I've got a call from IIMM and the GD/PI is in the last week of March. A faculty member of IIMM himself told my father that IIMM is good but PUMBA is better. I dunno what to do. I have just got a job in call-centre. Right now I'm undergoing training but within a fortnight I have to inform them about my decision to join or not. Coz they have a working bond of 6 months, so if you quit before the end of that period you have to pay them Rs.50,000! It is a company worth working for but I'm really at the crossroads and don't know what to do. And I need you guys to help me arrive at something...I've already dropped one year...I've always managed around only 60% in academics...what should I do? Should I drop one year more, work and prepare again or try my best to get into IIMM,Pune? Please help!

Hey Doink i'll advice you to work and give it another try next year.Bpo experience isnt being questioned anywhere so I guess this work ex will only help you and u'll have a better chance next year.

Another thing buddy. It's your life and you have to decide what to do.You have to come up with some way or the other to convince ur parents about the decisions you make.
Tomorrow supossing ur fly. gets transferred to a place like Andaman would they still insist on u taking admission there itself??

I agree with jacob4uin. Now that u don't have any decent institute in ur hand, so it's better to get 1 more year of work ex and then give a shot.

Don't get into any B-School, just for the heck of it. Later down the years you'll repent. Realize ur going to spend a substantial amount of money and more important the precious 2 years. So don't compromise.

Anyhow, ur not going to sit at home. U'll be working.

hi doink, 1st of all u need to ask ur self are u serious abt doing an mba,(cause u dont seem to mind the fact that ur parents have put such unrealistic restrictions) if ur serious then widen ur scope, i mean having conditions like mba only in pune is not really viable, it severly restricts your options. ur parents need to understand that. and u need to do tell them now itself. now u have calls from a couple of ok colleges like alliance, amity, iimm and pune univ, wat abt bimtech??? by no means are ne of these colleges good, they are just ok. now the question is should u take admission into any of these coll's or should u try cat, xat again next year while u work at the call centre this year (doing nothing for 2 years is not an option at all).
since u graduated last year u must have put in abt 7-8 mnths of prep for cat and xat but ur performance is extremely poor in these exams. it would have been pbbly understandable if this had happened in ur final year when u had to cope with ur coll studies as well, but after literally spending a year doing nothing but preparing for the entrances u need to ask urself can u put in a significantly better performance next year. give this question a lot of thought, introspect, were did u go wrong. if u can put in sincere and dedicated preparation for cat xat 2005 and if u can face the up's and downs coming ur way (bad performances in mocks, frustration in quant etc etc) then i suggest u take up the call centre job and start preparing right away. ofcourse there is another option were instead of a call center job u can try to do CA. even passing just ca-inter has some value.
ultimately only u know how badly u want to do an mba, how does an mba fit into the scheme of things in your life. if ur doing an mba because thats what ur freinds are doing then u can pbbly join one of the colls that u have mentioned.

I am not sure about B-Schools in Pune. I am quite sure of B-Schools in Chennai. ICFAI Chennai is one of the top B-Schools in Chennai. But you dont get high salaries here as iims - only a few Top business houses are located in Chennai. IBS-C is pretty new, even IBS is new, so the indusrty interface is not great as IIM. But instead of wasting one year, you can think about spending time properly. If u join MBA now, U will complete it in 2 yrs. But when u join next yr. u will waste one yr. So indirectly u will gain 1 yr by doing MBA this yr.- One yr experience after MBA will take u high. But ICFAI is costly !! Very Costly !!

unless u are too good - dont dream about IIM or XLRI - But if u waste one yr. it will be a black mark for your MBA lif at top 10 B-Schools. So think ---- Take a good decision. I am 2005 student of IBS-C .... send a message if u want to know more about IBS. But please dont waste one yr.

Be happy while you're living, For you're a long time dead.

Here is a list of colleges u can join NEXT yr.

SIBM
SIIB
SCMHRD
SCIT
SITM

there r all the symbi colleges u r eligible for, if ur defence, then SIMS is open 4 u too.

non symbi :
Indra
IIMM
PUMBA
ISBM

these are the better colleges which have given a decent pay package to their students in summers and finals.

dont go to **** though. personal opinion. it sucks.

now, u can also go for mass communication at SIMC. thats a boom area too.

hope that ur job is goin on fine.
take care
