Introduction
Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kozhikode is organizing a two day Finance seminar Arthanomics 2005 on 15th and 16th January 2005 at its campus in Kozhikode, Kerala. The event is sponsored by UTI Bank, who is the platinum sponsor, and Mahindra, who is the gold sponsor. The seminar is being organized by the Finance student interest group at IIM K, Financially Yours. The talks will be centered on the theme "Risk vs. Reward - Exploring opportunities and Business challenges". Till recently, India had a tightly regulated financial system with lending and borrowing rates being fixed, and the Indian financial system did not trade in many instruments. Neither did it have many players outside of the public sector banks. Hence risk management hadn't been given the focus it has been in other financial markets. But with complex cross-border financial transactions and increasing use of sophisticated financial instruments risk management has become more challenging than ever. As leading financial services firms invest in modern risk management systems, supervisors and regulators need to adapt their methods of assessing risk as well. The seminar hopes to present the latest techniques in integrated risk management and highlight the challenges that managers face.
