Summer Placements 2004 @ IIM Calcutta - 06-01-2005, 02:28 PM

IIM-Calcutta is the toast - or should we say envy - of all its sister institutes. Its students have topped the job show this year; all 278 of them have been placed. Better still, foreign firms that had never recruited from India have come and picked up the best of the best from IIM-C.

But the icing on the cake is that the highest stipends (both foreign and domestic), have also been bagged by IIM-C students. The Joka campus is celebrating like never before.

As many as 54 students from this batch have been placed with overseas companies ? a whopping rise from last year's 17. The highest domestic stipend offered in any B-school this year was Rs 90,000 per month, and two IIM-C students have got it. The highest foreign stipend ($8500) also went to an IIM-C student, the institute's placement cell says.

Besides, the Joka campus is the first and only one in the IIM chain (not to speak of other B-schools), where General Atlantic Partners, the global private equity giant, chose to visit and recruit. GAP, famed for recruiting only from ivy league Bschools in the US, broke tradition and picked up two summer interns from IIM-C.

Seven students were recruited by Merrill Lynch, seven by JP Morgan, three by Barclays, 11 by Pricewaterhouse Coopers, two by Ernst & Young, 22 by IBM, 19 by ICICI Bank, six by Citibank and eight by GE ? each of these is the highest that these companies have taken anywhere in the country.

"Our alumni, settled all over the world, helped to get foreign companies that had never visited Indian campuses to recruit from IIM-C," said Sanjeev Jha, placement representative of the institute.

In the investment banking sector, IIM-C has outshone others. ING Investment Bank chose to recruit only from IIM-C this year and is taking the summer intern to Hong Kong. There were 19 investment bank desks in all - a much larger participation than has ever happened in IIM-C history. JP Morgan and Barclays Capital recruited the highest number of summer interns from IIM-C this time. Lehman (Hong Kong) recruited three interns for its investment banking division.

In the hedge funds sector IIM-C again bagged gold by becoming the first and only Indian B-school to get global giant Gartmore Global Credit Funds to recruit from the campus. GGC has been nominated by Euro hedge as the best start up fund and it recruited two students from IIM-C for its newly established India facility.

IIM-C turned out to be a favourite among global consultancy firms as well. This year the entire gamut of consultancy giants including PwC, KPMG, Ernst&Young, Accenture, Hay Group and Hewitt Associates came to Joka, with PwC and Ernst and Young making the highest number of offers across all Bschools in the country. Even the International Finance Corporation (World Bank) chose IIM-C as the favoured campus for summer recruitments.

It not only recruited second year students but also picked up a doctoral student for a six month internship.

Big bucks in store for desi MBAs

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ THURSDAY, JANUARY 06, 2005 01:59:19 AM]

AHMEDABAD: Backed by a bullish world economy, the global wealth churners are now in India to hunt for the creme de la creme of management graduates.

And the top three Indian Institute of Management campuses ? Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Kolkata ? are witnessing a flurry of exciting offers for the summer placements this year.

There has been a resurgence in summer recruitments across the board with overseas placements witnessing an impressive over 50% growth to 159 acceptances in all the three IIMs together.

The stipend offered for the summers too have jumped with the maximum domestic stipend of Rs 90,000 having been offered to an IIM-Kolkata student.

The recruitment process in the IIMs at Lucknow, Indore and Kozhikode are not yet over and its is expected to take another month or so.

There was a new trend in placements this year ? the advent of new investment banking and private equity firms who are now looking at India for recruitments on a large scale.

Companies like Global Atlantic Partners (GAP), Barclays, American Express Financial Advisors (AEFA) are recruiting for the first time from the Indian campuses.

In addition other I-banks like Lehman Brothers, Goldman Sachs, Meryll Lynch, J P Morgan, Deutsche Bank and HSBC made a beeline for the IIM campus and together accounted for a bulk of the foreign postings for summers.

The boost in world economy along with the positive outlook for this year has given a major impetus to recruitments by I-banks, Shashwat Sharma, student co-ordinator, IIM-Ahmedabad told ET.

The IIM alumni fraternity too have played a vital role in attracting the I-banks, who are considered to be the highest paymasters globally.

Okay, well this aint related with placements @ IIM C, but i thot y start a new thred... so am posting here ....... mods plz feel free to make a new thread if u feel it sud be that way ......

This is regarding the cultural fest of IIM C to be held from 14th to 16th January...

The Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIMC) is hosting a Cultural Festival from the 14th through the 16th of January this year. For the first time in it's history, the three cultural clubs of the institute, The Dramatics Cell, The Choreography Club and JBS- Baro C, the Western and Indian Music Group, come together to put up what is not only the largest but the first Cultural Festival of its kind in Eastern India, 'Carpe Diem'. Etymologically, Carpe Diem is a Latin word which means, Seize the Day; simply put, to make every moment worthwhile. The Event is Co-Sponsored by IBM in association with Pepsi, Sony, Whirlpool, Sony Music and The Park Hotel. The Media Sponsors are RedFm, Aaj Tak and Telegraph.

The Festival incorporates professional performances including Lillete Dubey's play - "Dance Like a Man". Nationally acclaimed and one of the most successful English plays in India, it has also been staged in Pakistan and recently completed a historic run of 222 shows. A Dance performance by the scintillating Beat Busters from Calcutta and a Professional Band also add colour to the Festival.

With a host of events and inter-college drama, dance and music competitions like, a Street play, Play in a Bag, Danz-e-Rodeo and an Amateur rock band competition among many others, the three day festival promises to be an exhilarating experience.
Participation comes from Business Schools and Engineering Colleges across the country.
