Re: magazine rankings 2004 out - 29-08-2004, 06:30 PM

I had decided not to post in this thread .... but the itch got better of me

Guess it will be cliche to say magazine rankings are lll crap. But then they do ten to form people opinion, atleast layman's . And that is why magazines keep coming out with rankings and Institutes want there rankings to be good. It goes lke the Famous Media Manager of Hitler, forgot his name, "If you tell a lie sufficient no of times, it becomes a truth". And that is what these Magazines people want to exploit.

All that is required is to goo into their methodology and you will know what they are doing. Take for example the BW cosmode survey. Take the NETWORKING parameter . And what do they mean by NEtworking ... no nothing like Alumni networking or Industry Networking. By networking they mean how the BSchools share there programs and curriculum books, faculty etc with other LOCAL Bschools. What the hell. How is this parameter Imp for ranking and how does this parameter makes a Good B School ??? .... ANd look at scores. MDI got highest at 93/100. IIM A is 22nd at 51/100 and IIM C 46/100 !!! Take that parameter out alonoe and the rankings change drastically.

Similar thing is done by other magazines. A fine day they just decide that this parameter i simportant and they include that into rankings.

Next time I suppose they will start including Latitude and Longitude in Rankings.

Couldnt agree more....rankings are just a means of making big bucks......all those parameters n weightages dont mean a thing. And as Indyan has said, these rankings just make a good case for data interpretation.......there r some glaring discrepancies in these rankings( dont wanna finger point..guess this thing can be left as an exercise for the CAT aspirants ).

The best way to find abt an institute's standing, is to talk to the ppl studying there....compile the experiences and then, think as to which school fits ur profile.
Personally, I believe rankings can never be generalized....to each his own

Honestly speaking, we had a ball of a time when we saw the rankings.....it just doesnt make any sense

Cheers,
Kanti

Woah! A Ranking thread thats not Locked..

ps: Was going thru the Mag where I shockingly see that "Students" rank IIMB > IIMA. Now the Qn arises. Who are these students ? The IIMB peepz or the CAT-taking Junta ? If its the latter, then I am quite surprised. ;-)
pps: No offence meant.

IIM B > IIM A. Quite possible if you look at individual streams.

For me there are only 2 parameters to judge on an institute. 1) Faculty 2) Placements.

During my MCA days, people used to leave DU, and come all the way from Delhi to Pune just because Pune University had faculty of some repute.
Infrastructure, fees, placements were quite secondary things.

See this is what rankings do to people ...

Boss 94 % of ppl given calls form IIM A join it ... around 3% Join IIM B, 2% IIM C and 1% leave for higher studies abroab ... although there are alomst 80% common calls .....

Currently, this year... IIM B have 6 ppl who left IIM A for B
IIM C has 5 ppl who left IIM A for C

Does that tell u anything about Students perception or if IIM B> IIM A??

I said, quite possible for individual streams.
Are those 11 people lunatics who left IIM A for B, and C? They are people who know exactly what they want and not go for hype.
Overall IIM A amd IIM B definitely above IIMC.

Failed to add. IIM A opened the waitlist this time unlike last year.
May be B-school students who were questioned by Cosmode know things that are to come better than the rest of us.

Heehaahaaa. Bingo!!
Ghulam,
How can a CAT-aspi know abt the faculties' bio-data to "form" a ranking before joining the Instti ?? Jus that a prof has done Ph.D from Wharton or Insead doesnt make him great or whatever. And well placements !!

ps: The CAT-aspi's dream - To get into IIMA. Why doesnt anyone say B or C ? ;-)

Re: magazine rankings 2004 out - 29-08-2004, 09:50 PM

whoa!! this is some thread..
rankings depend mainly on perspective. if you were to ask the concerned parties, namely, students, industry, aspirants, etc. to rank the b-schools, we'd end up different ranks.. also the weightage given to the parameters is quite subjective and b-schoolers are in the best position to ratify that.
another point that questions the credibilty of these rankings..some schools dont participate. juist boz I,L,K,FMS didn't participate doesn't mean that they are no longer in the top10 schools of the country.
IIM B> A?? incredulous to the majority of us, but that may well the way some ppl see it.
waiting for the other mags. to come out with their rankings..
