Re: magazine rankings 2004 out - 29-08-2004, 09:30 AM

chill folks...chillax.....this is no way to get a discussion (if ever there was one here!) going....and i dont really see why both ya folks got carried away to such an extent.... and therein prolly lies the reason why threads on rankings mostly end up being locked!!! It's not that none of the junta around here dont like to compare bschools across the country.....its not like none of them wanna know which is the "best"....its not like none of them wanna get a "professional third-party" view of how bschools across India function.....then what really is the problem with threads on rankings??? well, for one, most such discussions usually tend to end up on the "my daddy strongest" lines !!! Such threads tend to have a HIGH amount of digression from the core purpose, which usually when a thread starts - is to discuss on the rankings per se and their methodologies adopted......sure.....a gr8 discussion can ensue on the market research techniques adopted by these agencies, or how the consumer(student) behavior is affected by these rankings, or how these rankings can (?) be a function of parameters least talked of.....but experience says that is not how these threads end.....they result in a lotta mudslinging....and i'm sure everyone would agree when i say that mudslinging ain't something that one would like to see on as informative a forum as this....

and specifically with regards to this thread.......folks......as maverick put it so very succintly, to each unto his own.....and as regards locking this thread, well, am unlocking it for the time...as i personally believe that a BB should be ..err...a BB !! but please be advised all ye folks....any slight hint of mudslinging ...and out goes this thread...and for the person that started this thread.....m8.....this BB is as open as it can get....and if u do feel that by locking this thread of yours, this is the last u wanna c of this forum....well...i have nothing much to say on that....its ur decision.... to each unto his own....

Cheers

Good Reply, Personally, i have never cared a damn about Rankings. The worst part about them is, that nearly all of them have fairly confusing methodologies of ranking and conducting surverys. As a result, there are some 4-5 rankings out every year with each having very very contrating results.
Take the case of BW, the rankings they have given out are totally impratical in my opinion. No offences meant to people in MDI and IRMA, but do u think anyone would leave IIMC for MDI and IIM-I/K or IRMA ??
Besides institutes such as IIFT, IRMA, NITIE offer very very specialized courses which cannot be compared with other colleges.

I fully agree with the viewpoint that all these rankings are crap.Besides their methodolgy sucks!I went thru those rankings and found their reasoning meaningless. But the worrying aspect is that there is always this possibility of prospective students getting misguided by these rankings.Wouldnt be surprised if **** is ranked the BEST B-school next year.

PS:No offence meant to **** students

Rankings have always created controversies... and so it will...
But i think COSMODE has come out with one of the best parameters to rank the B Schools... with a decent weightage provided to all necessary parameters...

Infrastructure - 10%
Faculty, Research & Consultancy - 25%
Admission & Delivery - 23%
Networking - 10%
Placement - 30%

Often people give a majoirty of the weightage to placements... which i think is very wrong... MBA is not only about good placement... but about quality education... how you change the personality of the students.. what facilities do they get etc etc... and this ranking takes all that into account...

Further they have given breakup of each parameter & have assigned weights to each sub-parameter within a broad parameter.. for example under Faculty we have :

Faculty Strength - 38%
Faculty Publication - 26%
No. of Ph.Ds Produced - 4%
Other (Non post Grad Prog.) - 22%
Qualitative Education - 10%

similarly all other parameters have been well defined & scores of top 25 institute in each parameter are given very neatly!!

Hi Mihir... i don't think anyone will take offence of this comment... atleast in MDI... coz as of now its a genuine comment... no one will leave IIMC for MDI ... (even when i was taking admissions... i i was selected in IIMC i would have joind that)... but thats why they have a separate ranking "If Students Ranked Them" where MDI comes fourth after IIMC......

This just signifies that (as per the surveying institution) MDI scores better than IIMC but there is a perception amongst the students in general that IIMC is better than MDI... some years back students ranked IIM K better than MDI... but the perception has changed and today even students rank MDI above IIM L, IIM I & IIM K... this is all about a paradigm shift from IIMs to non IIMs .. which will take place gradually...

Its not about MDI or IRMA etc being better any of the IIMs... its all about placing them in the same league as that of IIM!!!

Cheers

Hi ,
Well said Mango. I am still wondering why you people are continuing with this thread.Rankings by various magazines make a very good practice for data interpretation for future aspirants .Nobody cares about it .Serious Aspirants & Recruiters know which all are the B schools that matter and has good students with proven records .The best way to choose a school is to talk to alumni , have a look @ the previous batch profiles and actual placement figures and companies which come over there .Buddies , if anyone goes by ranking to choose a B school huh :!: then he certianly deserves that school .

we all know rankings r never sacrosanct but at the same time dont limit freedom of expression ,till its not harming anything. i just wish these guys never come to know how their institute got into the list or their hearts will be broken.
does it not sound like dare to think beyond IIMs. look at the infrastructre, respect in corporate world, alumni tht good b school commands.
at the same time let them be happy with their chest pounding and pride they so vehmently want to achieve

Hi All,

Just to clarify some doubts. First of all it is not IIM-Indore at 28th but IMS Indore.
IIM-Indore did not participate in the rankings and neither did FMS,IIM-L n IIM-K.

Secondly, my dear friend Prateek, please remove this doubt from your mind that ne1would leave an IIM or FMS for that matter for MDI. This is no mudslinging but a fact.

I beleve out of a batch of 115 students aty IIM-I atleast 45 have left MDI including me when we had the choice. There is this 1 guy who has left MDI twice both last year and this year.

Newayz, I truly believe that MDI is a gud institute but please refrain from such asisine comments in the future.

And about the rankings, we all know what they do, so let's not go down that road again.

i personally feel that these rankings change as quickly as the bollywood bimbos change their clothes in a filmi song.dont look for ne deep implications in these.when i was prepping,i collected all the wierd rankings i could get hold of n they left me all the more confused with IIM-A being the only consistent topper in all of em.now,BW is not some teeny weeny mag so obviously a lotta ppl will be reading these surveys but i wud say just read it like ne other article.the worst u can do is base ur insti choice on mag surveys.

Re: magazine rankings 2004 out - 29-08-2004, 03:37 PM

Kinda kept myself queit abt this thing, but here are my views.

It's this time of the year when the bitching about B-school rankings start. The same time when B-schoolers get into the 'My daddy strongest of all' mode.

So many magazines come out with all sorts of ratings leaving everyone perplexed. Aspiring students are left clueless. B-schoolers are in no better position. One magazine says their institute is number 4, and an other equally 'reputed' magazine says their B-school is number 12. Thank God there is no negative ranking! Last year, just the day before my interview, ET rated IIM-I number 5 after IIMs ABCL. An other magazine rated IIM-I 21 the year before. If only B-schools could vault their positions so easily in a year's time! That piece of information only fortified my belief that rankings are as worthy as a piece of crumpled paper in the room corner trashbin.

Now, coming to the core issue, what are these ratings all about? and what is the real rating among B-schools in India? Trust me, this is one of the toughest questions to handle. I've never studied in any other B-school other than IIM-I. Is it fair even to try to rate other B-schools? I guess no. I'm enjoying my stay here. I'm really studying a lot. I'm not even sleeping. It's been total fun. But, so does every other B-schooler - or so they claim. Where do we stand in comparison? Only God - and, mind you, NO ONE ELSE - knows.

In all, my take for aspiring students would be: speak to people to whom you are close with. Don't go by magazine ratings. I won't be surprised if IIMA is rated 5 sometime now! Leave the rankings game to magazine wallas and B-schoolers. This bitching is something that's never gonna end.

An edited version of what I posted in my blog.

If i may quote Anil, "To each his own"

Every ranking needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. And each person shud have his own criteria for evaluating colleges. If u ask me what i would have chosen last year, it wud ABC followed SJSOM, then XLRI,then IIFT and then MDI. The reason- SJSOM for its brand value(the IIT tag),XLRI- again its brand name for HR, and so on.
So my advice for b-school aspirants- Dont be guided by magazine rankings. Its better if u talk to some students from each college, ask them both the positives and the negatives, and then decide.
And if i may add, Placements is everything. There is no point in joining a "good" b-school if the placements suck. This is because, good placements is combined result of good faculty/infrastructure/networking/the rest. If u get them right, ur placements will also be good.
So be cautious in ur choosing and All the best guys,
Regards,
Sanjeev Garuda
