I can't figure out a edit button in my previous post ... so a new one

1. Don't go just by ranking given by one magazine ... compare it with what other rankings do say. There might be some abberations ...so just smooth it out using ur common sense (eg. MDI > IIMC). Belive me if all the magazines rank MDI above IIMC (which I'm sure will never happen) then there needs some serious thinking to be done while going for choice.

The logic "what happens if MDI is ranked 17th or 18th by all magazine" is as absurd as "what happens if IIMA starting placing all people with less than 2 lacs of salary". Means both the things are out of question ?


2. Whether or not ranking, but it is definitely indespensable. First, they give something to start with ... a base that can help u to explore more and build ur decision. Secondly, how on the earth do u expect a person sitting in bangalore to decide between MDI and ximb ??
* both the institutes are old with strong alumni base
* This year placement was more or less the same
* both have alumni placed at high places
* Students studying in these insitute shouts great ga-ga at such forums.
* Infrastructure and profs are equally good.

then the only option remain is talking to people whom u trust, coaching institutes and rankings.

The bottom line is don't take the rankings as the final say ... but definetly do consider them. There are faults in all the system, but u just can outright reject them.

The problems with rankings is that its very hard to say that X institute which is ranked 7th is better than Y institute which is ranked 8th. The disparity between X and Y in the rankings may be due to evaluation on subjective parameters such as perception rather than objective parameters such as infrastructure and placement.
That's why its better to follow a ranking system in which schools are grouped tigether based in grades such as A+,A,C-,etc.
Eg: IIMs ABCL and a few more will probably be in grade A+, blah blah. So instead of trying to differentiate between IIMs A,B,C or between XLRi and IIML, all instis with similar scores can be placed together. This would probably reduce the acrimony between B-School students and eliminate biased preferences, while at the same time provide B-School aspirants with an approximate estimate of where their target B_School stands.

In CAT so many institutes participate, i hope you all guys go for other institutes if you dont get thro. IIM - right ! Then IIM should be the 1st : Simple concept.

Then will come x y z ...... i dont care : IIM the Best - rest - one of the Best ! Dont try to confuse people with statistics. Dont use averages - as averages are not good indicators. Best percentile in IIM is 100 worst will be 98. So in other institutes best will be 98 then worst ?? Who cares - all these people got other institutes as they didnt get through IIM.

Cool down guys - MBA is about Us more than MBA Institute. Your Institute is best for you - not the best in the world. Please dont confuse others further.

Dear Divya,
I know it can be overwhelming to shortlist your college of preference. I hope this helps you -
1. Be sure of what you are looking for
a. Good infrastructure ( Labs , PCs, Internet, Books etc ) - eg. XIM, XL, IIM's,SP
b. Good faculty ( look at the industrial interface )
c. Good facilities ( Hostel, Dorm Rooms )

2. Have a clear idea of the specialization eg IMT G rocks for its Marketing. IIMA rocks for their Finance ( although all in IIM are great )

3. See what college gives you what you want. Pin down colleges that come closest to your requirement. Don't shoot for the stars. be realistic and know what college will fit into your need.

4. Not to mention see the faculty and mode of education - MICA is one helluva college for their teaching methods - most innovative

5. U must try to do lots of research before u fix on a coll.

Talk to any Bschooler regarding what he thinks about Rankings. The standard reply would be that they suk big time.
The point is what is the aim of magazines? To educate poeple. Nope, it just to increase revenue and selling... and they will do whatever it takes for attning that.... few facts ...

1. Director of Cosmode rang up IIM K Director and asked for money towards ad etc. with the remark i am sure ur insti will get a good rank

2. Co - Diro of Cosmode was an IIM C faculty who was actually fired from IIM C in late 70s. Need i say anything

3. Diro of Cosmode has got VERY good relations with Pritam singh. Infact when he was the director of IIM L, Cosmode was doing survey for Business Today. That time the result that it gave to BT was with IIM L as No. 1. BT did some of its own juggelry and made IIM L 4th. On that Cosmode got pissd off and went to Bussiness India which published the ratings with IIM L at no.1

SO much goes on behind scenes. Tell me how much faith can be put in the system??

No i am not saying that MDI is Bad or some other is good. Just that even an ounce of faith on rakings is hazardous. But the magazines know that no one can totally ignore the rankings. kuch extent tak to they will definetly belive it, and it actually happens.

I agree that a better way is to place institues in group the way AIMA used to do it. But the sense is again lost if u club 13 institute into 1 group. It again is of no use..
