Me @ IIT-B (SJM Som) - 07-08-2004, 10:36 PM

Hi all,
Long time since I joined. So finally got myself to post abt my life @ IIT-som..and kindly expect a lengthyyyyyy post

anyways, the good part is the hostel and the acads: the hostel in which i am ( hostel 12 ) has actually been designed by hafeez contractor - one of the more prominent architects around the country - there are 3 wings in the hostel - each of 7 floors and with each floor having something lke 40 rooms (gasp part 2 !!! ). the rooms are pretty good ( one per room ). All the wings are connected on the 5th floor by a skywalk. Since i registered rather late for the hostel - i ended up stuck in the A wing while all the others are in the C wing - but since i stay on the 5th floor itself - other wings are aeasy access using the skywalk - this skywalk is actually not like some small path or anyhting - it's like this huge mansion on the 5th floor.

We got like 2 TT courts + TV room 1 which has got these sofa like around to sit on, then we got the reading lounge + the hostel's computer room which has apple comps too - then there is a tv room2 with mattresses scattered all over there - so u cn like lie down and chillax and watch tv !!! + a gym but frankly that's immaterial to me - the mess has prrreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeettyy good food - yest i had bhel -
today pav bhaji !!! The mess is like in the basement of the hostel - there are 2 entries - one actually below the b-wing - so all lucky guys in that wing can catch the lift all the way down ( + any 5th floor lazy bum ( namely me !! ) can walk across the sky walk and get the lift - other entrance u actually have to go out of the hostel per
se to enter thro' there

Classes are pretty good - i have added my managerial eco teacher to my list of gods - this guy hardly does any theoretical stuff - cuts all the bs and gets to the application in current affairs - others do complain abt the speed but frankly i really enjoy it - this guy actually talks damn practically - i mean everyone else acts as a saint as far as talk abt ethics is concerned but he's damn straight abt it -" you define ethics and so on - not like that "nahin munna aise nahin bolte " - i mean he's really frank guy- i'm planning to take up an audit course in international mgmt but i doubt i can find the time - our Personality teacher is a real heroine - the only person i know who gets theorems and all into the subject - if there is one exam i'm really scared of flunking after staying in class for just 4 hrs, it is this one.

Well, the financial accounting teacher is a bloody express train - she's actually given us a case study on creating a balance sheet without answering even one of our doubts in how to create one !!! I have to summon all the powers that be to help me remember what crap i did in my 10th std !! I wonder whether it's a boon or a curse
that there are no CA's in our batch - if they were there , they cud help us - but now since none are there, chances of the entire class wiping out are high - yep, united we fall - ok, just exaggerating - i don't find balance sheets all that tuff - prob after 3 - 4 sessions i might get a good hang of it + dad is in town - i have
serious assistance now - stats and ob are pretty good too - tho caught myself totally distracted in OB class today, operations is pretty good too - just not my cuppa tea - BAD news : we had a surprise test today after just one session GOOD news : It was a multiple choice one + pretty decent ) u know what i love abt these subjects are that they are liek pretty open ended - i mean u can pretty much look at it at mnay angles and they may all contradict each other but all maybe right - except for financial acc tho' :( - gotta get the damn balance sheet rite - laptops which i thot were compulsory initially are no longer mandatory - so me gonna get my desktop back from chennai

BAD PART :
The fucking distance !!! Every day i have to walk like almost 1 km to reach the goddamn building, then 1 km back for lunch(mess) , then back to the SOm building for the second class - then back again to the hostel - so i did a smart thingy - i usually used to have lunch nd ended up skipping dinner - now i just do the opp our hostel is pretty much at the end of the road leading from the main gate and the
som building is 1/3 that distance away from the main gate ( for nutcases who've been to iit-b ) -sbi is such a sweetheart - they've set up shop next to the main gate too !!!! + no bikes allowed for masters and bachelors students ( or so they think but yeah, pretty strict abt it ) cycles are more painful than walking esp since itna
uphill downhill hota hai !!!!

We had to submit ur resumes yest - hey bhagwan , jitna izzat tha woh bhi ud gaya - the max limit allowed was one page and man i struggled to add stuff beyond my marks - i shud get a prize in creative writing when they see my entries in the achievements and the extra-curricular columns (true but very very highly exaggerated ) - i actually put down " organised blood donation camp in college" when all i remember doing was move the tables around and ...oh yeah ! donate blood !!!! ) - i was even contemplating to put in my goddamn gre and toefl marks just to fill atleast half the page - just hoping dad gets me a good summers esp when everybody else was struggling to make everything fit in one page !!!
Worst of all ??? booze is prohibited in the campus - another reason to write cat - man, if someone ever asks me why i chucked iit-b to try cat again (not yet decided tho ) - it'll be fun to watch their face when i explain why Anyways, this is the beginning of my first weekend here - got a project to deliver on friday - prob start it on monday as usual -getting t-shirts with iit-b ka chapa on it (didn't chip in with the
design tho' mood nahin tha ) - might go out for a movie nahin to hakone or some place - but first i gotta deposit something in that damn sbi acc to get cash ( we had a zero min deposit - guess how much i deposited ??? )

that's it for now
catch ya all l8r !!!
luv
Nikhil/Swami/Sam/Nikhz/et al

u guys r seriously lucky. today, almost every hostel has a print-out shop, xerox, an STD booth, night-canteens and other facilities - including the SBI ATM in tansa. I remember the first 3 yrs of my life....had to walk 2 f#$%ing kms from H-7 to the gate to print 1 page !!

Re: Me @ IIT-B (SJM Som) - 08-08-2004, 10:55 PM

k i have a confession to make
that post was a copy paste of a mail i sent one week back i.e. when the first week was actually over - now time has come to update as the second week is over and the third begins.
I have to say i have changed my mind a lot abt the subjects - in PD , i suddenly realized where it was going and was pretty good. My opinion on OB and stats remain the same . As far as financial accounting is concerned, once we talked to her, she's kinda slowed a bit, answers all our doubts pretty well ( including some of the more ridiculous ones that i pose ) and taking up easier cases . The first quiz on operations i did relatively decently but got badly jacked in the second one ( pathetic state of affairs when i actually went thro' what the guy taught !!!! ) But man, economics has started going waaaaay over my head - he told us to go thro' the stuff that he taught in the prev classes and i didn't - so the past week went bouncer - so I decided on friday to gotta get down and work - and the way i did that was watcching minority report yest and going over to meet my mom today and spent the entire day there ( when i have 2 cases to prep for tomorrow ) man, i'm gonna get badly jacked here !!!
Supposed to do a project in ops over a period of the term and we are supposed to update it every week based on what is taught in class - as usual. looks like i'm the "kamzor kaddi" there too . I thot my insomnia woulld help me when i was here - now looks like b-school is helping me cure my insomnia - been sleeping like hell out here ( no. not in class i actually pay attn to what is going on then - to be honest ( no BS ) the faculty is really good here ).
anyways, that is my second update on this thread
seeya later
Nikhil

PS - it's great to receive all the symapthy and advice i got abt the booze part !!! God bless all of u !!!
PPS - Zarine, ab kya bataon tujhe - it takes a lotta effort to login , copy paste the mail , and then submit it - try it, u'll realize how tuff it is.
