What will you do after you complete your studies? - 31-07-2004, 03:46 PM

Hello there,

So what have you all planned after you complete your studies. After your MBA or anything what do you all want to do? Most I am sure want to get a good job and settle down. What about the others?

Some I am sure want to start something of their own or continue in the family business. What about the rest? I know someone who wants to work for only one month in the whole year( actually a few days in a year) and earn enough to spend the rest of the year doing nothing.

What do you think of the idea of working only a few days in a year? Have you heard of anyone doing the same? What kind of work lets a person work only for a few days in a year?

Re: What will you do after you complete your studies? - 01-08-2004, 10:04 AM

Hello,

I am in Mumbai for the past 5.5 years. My ideas of work, work culture, everything related to work have been made in Mumbai only. I was living in a surburb of Kolkata earlier. Spent time only with friends, school and college. Never knew what real work was. Had no idea what to do in order to get a job! In fact I did not even know how to apply for one. I was encouraged by my Mom once or twice to apply in companies like L&T, Philips, Hong Kong Bank. ha! I never did. Names sounded too overpowering, in fact I was at a doubt weather I would be considered. I have done it now after working for some time.

I always have wanted to work, the idea of earning my own money really appeals to me. Its easy in our culture(bengali, no offence to anyone please) to not work. Due to large amount of unemployment girls are usually not encouraged to work. And after hearing stories most girls opt out. But in Mumbai the situation is very different. Here girls are encouraged, in fact they have to cause of various reasons, an expensive city being one of them.

Thus I have had to deal with culture shock. I also had to deal with a lot of other stuff.
It was in Mumbai that I came to know that there are different avenues of working, there are different types of professions. Depending upon the mentality and skill of a person he or she can choose a profession of his liking. It was very differnt from my image of a profession. Nevertheless I was able to accept it, largely because I have been to a school where I have been able to meet people from different walks of life.

I had met this person in one of the classes that I have been to. His dad has a chemical company with a turnover of 40 crores a year. When he heard that I wanted to apply for studying management he couldn't understand. I hardly looked like I could study for a subject like this. It was then he said to his friend, "Does she know what management is all about, she hardly knows a thing about management, how can she study it?" I was perplexed, I thought, did one need to know something extra to study management? At that time there was no forum like this, I just had a couple of friends who had just completed management study. All they could say was take the exam and a few other tit bits. I had to get more information, and thats what I did. My friends have been supportive all through.

-incomplete- bye

DUH!!!! If u already know everything about it, why would u study it?

So chuck ppl like that and do an MBA if u r convinced u need it to advance ur career. Dont do it just 'cuz everyone's doing it. Thats the bggest mistake we guys make...

Uday

yup i met many such ppl during my goa trip. incidently most of them were from europe.. they work for around 3-4 months in their countries n disburse in goa, main reason being cheap drugs and drinks.
but i suppose indian wont like this type of living.. they believe in saving for better future life rather present.

What ever profession u choose, do it bcz u want to and that u r good at it. not bcz someone else is pursuing it or its the "in thing".. thats the greatest mistake one would ever make.
