Hi!
A very warm welcome to all the PGites!
There was no such thread describing the life here at MFC-DU till now. Before i joined this b-school, i used to wonder what life would be here at MFC. Bt now that i have joined it, i along with my few other batchmates will throw some light on how life is here at MFC. Hopefully this will help the next incoming batch and the wannabe MBA junta at large to understand the life here and what to expect from this b-school.
Now for the newbies, MFC stands for Master of Finance & Control and its a course offered by the Deppt. of Financial Studies(DFS), University of Delhi and is located in the serene South Campus.
Although now several other universities in India offer a course called MFC but DU was the first university to offer such a course in India way back in 1987 and since then, MFC-DU continues to be the most recognized course out of them all and enjoys excellent rapport with the corporates countrywide and especially with those located in NCR and Mumbai.
This was for the Intro. part. I'll be sharing with you all loads of inputs about life @ MFC in the coming days.

P.S. : I request PGites to refrain from posting any Admission related queries on this thread. This is basically meant for describing life@MFC. A thread relating to such admission related queries is already active on PG. Here is the link -

Re: Life @ MFC-DU - 02-08-2009, 01:52 AM

It has been 17 days since the course commenced but everything here is happening so fast that i wonder where all these days have vanished.
The course officially kicked off on 16th of July but activities had commenced much earlier through a yahoogroup for our batch where v were asked by our seniors to send in articles for newsletter, get our business suits ready, etc b4 v all officially joined on 16th.
Finally it was 16th of July and the crazy wait to meet an all new set of friends got over. Some of us already knew about our other batchmates, thanx to the orkut community. But personal interaction is always a different experience. We were a small batch of just 42 students (i wud say this is one of the biggest positives of this course). The orientation began and v were first addressed by our HOD Prof. Sehgal and then by Prof. Muneesh. B4 i had joined, i was told by seniors and alumni that these two are the pillars of this course and a small intro. and pep talk by both of them made me realise why these two are so highly regarded by our alumni even when they all had passed many many years ago. V had a formal session where v all 1st year students introduced ourselves to all the faculty members and our seniors. And I was literally stunned when i was hearing out the profiles of my batchmates during their introductions. The only thought that was coming to me at that point of time was " ki bhai tera to patta kat gaya yaha par. How the hell r u going to compete wid dese guys?". Here students comprised of Commerce & Eco grads from top notch colleges like SRCC, Hansraj, College of Business Studies, St. Xaviers Kolkata, etc. Some ppl are already doing courses like CA, CFA, etc. Apart from them, there are a no. of engineers & some of them from ivy league colleges like IIT-G, IIT-K, DCE, NSIT, etc. And then there was more to come. There are ppl here with loads of work ex(6-7 have work-ex exceeding 4 years) with 60% of the batch having worked earlier. Add to this, there are ppl with varied backgrounds with even doctors, physiotherapists, microbiologists, english and history grads making the cut here.
B4 i cud get over this, the seniors started with their intros and their profiles were no different. Rather wo to hamare batch ke bhi baap nikale.
Then finally v had a tea/coffee & snacks session and to make things light, v had an informal session wid the seniors and dat was d best part of the day. I cud fianlly overcome my morning shocks.
And after lunch, v got to know that v'll have a lecture that day itself. Yaar ye kya hai! Pehle hi din classes.
But overall it was a gud first day. One that i'll remeber for a v.long time.

Re: Life @ MFC-DU - 02-08-2009, 10:33 PM

Life at MFC thus far has been a gud mix of of hectic schedules and in between them, some really gud enjoyable moments. In the first few days, v had to encounter GDs and Interviews for selections to our preffered committees/teams. Infact many of the guys had to go thru multiple interviews before selections could be finalised. Urs truly got selected to the Corporate Communications Team. Here we have a total of nine committees/teams. They are - Placement Team, Convention Team, Alumni Team, Corporate Communications Team, International Relations Team, Cultural Team, Newsletter Team, Treasury Team and Web Team. The Secy. & Jt. Secy. for each committee are always from the senior batch. Also, the activities here are absolutely student driven. This makes it much more exciting and also provides the students a really gud platform for overall personality development.
At this point of time, let me also tell u that all the activities of the committees mentioned above are run under the ambit of a student body called AFCON (Association of Finance & Control).

Apart from committee selections, v had photoshoots lasting for 2 days. Now before u start thinking that whether it is a modelling college or a match-making institute, lemme tell u that it was all for the placement brochure Pata nahi placement brochure banane wale hain ya fir koi shaadi ki album? V were strictly supposed to be in our business suits. Yar wearing this formals is a very tedious job. Most of us here compare wearing business suits to wearing a VARDI.
Anyways moving ahead, v also had a mandatory course of Art of Living wich v had to attend in the evenings after our classes got over. It was a six day course and it was really gud. The day scholars got really late to get back to their homes(sm ppl reached their homes even aftr 11pm) bt the kriyas taught 2 us during the course were really helpful 2 re-enegise ourselves.
...to be continued...

Re: Life @ MFC-DU - 03-08-2009, 12:16 AM

Life here is quite different from a residential b-school. Here, as per the hostel rules, students from NCR region are not eligible for a hostel. This is bcoz hostel rooms are limited in South Campus and they are to be shared b/w students of MFC, FMS(MS), MBE & other courses. So they are no rooms left for ppl 4m NCR.
This means that there is a mix of day scholars and hostelers. Being a day scholar has its own advantages and disadvantages. The biggest advantage is that there is no home sickness 4 such students. Also the home-made food is always there. And yes a bit more independence. But then, i feel that travelling in NCR neutralises all such advantages (saying from my personal experience). But probably the biggest disadvantage is that day scholars like me miss out on the fun that takes place in the hostels. A hostel life is really exciting & different and v ppl really miss out on that front.
I'll ask some of my batchmates residing in hostels to come here and share their experiences. I m sure that Life@MFC is definately different for those who are staying in hostels.

Re: Life @ MFC-DU - 05-08-2009, 06:40 PM

I had told u all in a previous post that all activities here take place under the ambit of a Student body called AFCON.
Now on 31st of July, we had a small event called AFCON Inaugural. This event officially marks the beginning of all the student activities under this body. It was a great priviledge for all the students to have Mr. Satnam Singh, CMD of Power Finance Corporation (PFC) as the Chief Guest for this occassion. He had an interaction with all the students for over an hour and lemme tell u, it was one of the best motivational talks i was ever involved in. Really look forward to listening him yet again in the near future.
He unveiled the AFCON Calendar for the coming academic year.
And apart from this, something REALLY BIG took place. He released the new curriculum for MFC. Guys this is a huge event in context of MFC. Our HOD and Professors had been working really hard for approx. 1.5 years to get the new course approved from DU Authorities. Anyone who has ever been related to DU would v.well know how difficult it is to get any approvals. But now that it has been done, Mr. Satnam Singh released the new curriculum on that day and all the students received it very warmly because we all here at MFC understand that this is a huge step forward not only for the students but for the brand MFC as well. The course is absolutely updated and v.well caters to the present industry demands. In words of our Professors - "We can explore much more about Finance and we are ready to take on the best in the business now".
Since then, the new course is the buzzword in the campus and there is a new sense of excitement among us, esp the junior batch bcoz this new course is applicable for the 2009-11 batch and onwards. We all really feel lucky to have made an entry into this course at the right time.

Re: Life @ MFC-DU - 07-08-2009, 09:39 PM

Since the past one week, all the committees/teams have swung into bigtime action. Normally our classes start at 9:15 and end at around 3:30-4:00pm. But after the classes get over, the students of most of the committees get engaged in committee meetings and other works associated with them. Some of the students are engaged in doing the works assigned to them by their respective committees even when the lectures are on.
We have a majority of our alumni working in NCR, Mumbai and Bangalore. So v conduct Alumni meets in these three cities in August and early September every year. Infact, Alumni Meet at Mumbai is scheduled for today and its on at this point of time.
Alumni Meets at Bangalore and Delhi are scheduled to take place later this month. So the alumni team is working extensively these days to get all the arrangements in place. Also this year we plan to conduct an alumni meet outside India because a good no. of our alumni are now working at different foreign locations. This plan is under the pipeline and i sincerely hope that it materialises. So the Alumni team is engaged with this task as well.
Also our flagship event Convention is scheduled next month and the preparations are on. The members of Convention team are also on their toes these days.
Placecom members have always some running to do and they are doing the same these days. But they are doing all this for the cause of our college and our batchmates. A huge thanks to them.
Cultural Committee is busy with the arrangements to welcome all us freshers. And then Corp. Relations team has its own agenda and targets to meet. So they too are busy!
All in all, a good exciting phase is on with so much happenning at the campus and with so much to learn everyday for everybody. We all juniors can get a good feel of things to come in the coming two years.

Re: Life @ MFC-DU - 08-08-2009, 08:25 PM

hi all

first of all i would like to thank gaurav aka maddy for starting this wonderful thread giving a peek into this quite an old but not so well known course. I also find it heartening to know that the junior batch 2009-11 are finding the course and its offerings exciting and yet eventful to their careers. yes we started way back in 1987 but still are new to the glitzy b-school world probably because MFC is not your usual MBA course, its an MS in finance but since wannabe students and more so the course structure itself is spanned out in such a manner so we can hardly complain.

I am from 2008-10 batch and I must admit that the first year has been quite an unforgettable one for me!....studies,somewhat sports( particularly in hostel where i stayed for a month and a half, since as maddy has already said NCR students arent allowed to be a part of one and so your's truly wasnt given that accomodation, but whatever stay i had there it was thoroughly enjoyable...late night movies, gup-shup...assignments..PPTs..parties and everythin...one can dream of)
then we have a lot of guest lectures, annual events..which everybody looks forward to since we get to interact with our well known alumni..which are def less than b-schools since the strength of this course has been less since its inception. And some valuable insight into their career paths and life since passing out of MFC....

overall I have def learnt a lot and still on this track!!

more to follow from me!!!

Hi puys,

m in 2009-11 batch. Life at MFC has been fair to me so far .

i joined in with the expectation of meeting really interesting and capable people and that wish has been granted. profs are an interesting lot but the real gem is the diversity of the batch. we hv microbiologist, physiotherapist, textile enginners, civil eng, E&C eng, computer science grads, ppl from banking, research, consulting, railways and truckload of software professionals. This given the batch size of 42.

No class goes by without an interactive discussion among teacher and students. every topic is dug to its mantle and analysed from all perspectives.

then we have numerous committes and joining atleast 1 of them is compulsory. being part of one gives you the feel of responsibilityin an organization. REAL COOL STUFF!
