Is it worth leaving a job for CAT prep? - 13-07-2004, 03:16 PM

hi ppl,

it must have become a cliche that -- "I'm working and i dont get time to study ... forget studies ... I dont get time to rest" --

I gez many of us who are working face this situation .... so is there any solution for this? ...

take my case for example ... Im into Sales in a top company and my job involves lot of travel within the city and outside the state ... and i face the same dilemma every day .... I want to study for CAT but NO TIME to? ...

I have even contemplated leaving the job in order to accomodate the studies ... though i havent finalised any decision ... i'd like to know ... is it really worth the risk ... I mean on one hand I have thejobsecurity but not so great future (if I continue in the same job) and on the other hand I have the risk of running into CAT and not cracking it ... ( like last yr -- got abt 94.5 p'tile)... but a great future if in case i do ..

I've read in one of the posts that a few of u ppl did leave ur jobs to study for CAT ... gez some advise will b of great help ...

Thanx

I managed leave to study for CAT last year.
Had I not got it, I would have resigned.

Think like this...must not regret later that if that were done, this would have happened.

Is it worth leaving a job for CAT prep?

Yes - If u are ready to slog it out.. eat & sleep CAT.. but be prepared just incase u dont make it!!!

No - If u are not sure abt whether u will be able to clear it or not!!!

But do u really think.. LIFE gives u such easy answers...

Take Care...

If you are financially quite ok then I urge you to go ahead and give CAT a full try.
It's worth resigning for a seat in IIM.

this is one of the classic question that comes into the mind of each and every CAT ASPIRANT who is working....
if i have to take a decision i would say that i would not resign my job for the simple reason that by resigning the job i am putting that much pressure on me perform in cat....

lets be straight....1 full years preparation is evaluated during those 2 hrs of test that we give...and there is no certainity that everything will go according to our plan....

i would rather face cat with job supporting me from behind than take it with the though, at the back of the mind that what IF i dont crack this......

but this is just my personal opinion....infact if one is willing to take this risk i would be the first person to stand up and salute that person for it shows how much he/she aspires to be in iims.....

This question can be debated for ever....for at any time of the day we can find 2 groups who contradict each other.....

:-)

There are 2 things that need to thought upon...
1---the risk factor..if u dont get into any B school
2 --How wld u defend urself in GD -PI (if one reaches there )when Panel wld question u on why u had left the job and then why should they take u instead of another guy who has not left his job...
But the main prob is if one is so busy that he cant clear Cat(written) without leaving his job....then wats the road ahead?????

Hey ppl...

This is a pretty concenscious issue, and needs to be dealt with sensitively. You need to consider both options, and then come to a decision, keeping in mind pros and cons of both !

Like ghulam said, if you don't have financial problems, i would recommend you to drop the job and go for CAT. Samjho yaar - with job going along, there is always an hinderance in concentration. You cannot give your 100 percent. And if you want to aim for the best schools, believe me - those 2 hrs are CRUCIAL ! And believe me, you will feel you've missed something if you don't get thru in the first attempt ! (Then you'll feel that you should've dropped the job then).

Second, if you think that you are capable enough of handling both those things equally well, and doesn't hamper your performance a great deal... keep the job on...

I'll tell you what I did (it was nothing right or wrong - i thought that was the best for me). I was in a similar situation - working since May 2003, and the CAT happened in November 2003 initially. I worked till the end of October. Dropped the job then, and concentrated for CAT for a month (was involved in usual light preps with the job). Concentrated, meaning not necessarily preparing - just relaxing, and concentrating harder...

After the CAT on 23rd Nov., I had joined a part-time job (though that doesn't count as work ex, it helps me to stay in touch with the subject). Along with that, I appeared for other tests like the FMS, IIFT, XAT, NMAT, IMT, JMET etc. So, I was still working light, and preparing for exams. Tha really helped me, because I didn't OVERSTRESS myself by any way ! That is the only thing that you need to take care of...

In the end, its your personal decision - nobody can tell you whether it is right or not - you have to gauge it yourself !

Hope this helps...

Samit.

hi,

i guess the decision is person - centric ... though fraught with risks ( if one decides to actually leave the job..) ... but the pickings are slim with a sales job (which i hold) ... lots of touring and loads of work load ...

gez it is left to the individual ... : ...

whoever said life is easy??

personally do not think it is worth the risk... unless the job is really bad.. when I say bad i am not talking in terms of monetary benefits!!
