Life During SUMMERS - 01-05-2009, 03:56 PM

After searching this forum....I didnt find any thread which is there specifically to help ppl in there summer internship....so i decided to start this thread....

The other day i talked to couple of my friends and they were sharing there summer intern experience with me...

One of them didnt have any work ex ....and he went to his internship with certain expectation and was disappointed....

The other person was had around 2-3 years of worl ex and he also had certain expectation and he too was not satisfied with what he got....

So this is the very purpose of starting this thread....so that people can share their experience during summer internship....i mean everything...how they felt in office, ow was the industion, the wrok culture, the project etc etc everything...

For fresher this is their first opportunity to interact with corporate world...so all fresher pour ur thoughts and ur experince abt corporate world so that future fresher can have a feel before joining their sumers...

For wrk ex ppl also please post how ur summer intern experince was different from your previous wrk experience....For example i worked for an IT consulting MNC and now i am doing my summers in a Bank and i find everything a lot differwent from IT culture....So puys post your experience to help future and current puys....

I mean it will really help the next year summer interns and they can build there expectation accordingly.....

If you want you can post the following info also

Work ex:
Previous Org: (name or the domain like IT/Mech/Manufacturing etc)
Summers: (Name of company/ or wether its a company related to Fin/Ibank/Bank/Ops etc)
Project:

Wish all puys a wonderful summers intership......I will post my experience later..

Well can do that....actually that depends on the purpose of the thread....I found on that thread some format has be given and people jus post about the details of their internship there...i mean the copmany, project etc...

So i thought that the purpose of that thread is not discussing anything but just posting ur summer details..

But the purpose of this thread is to share the actual experinece..and its not limited to any particular year...I want this thread to be perpetual...just like Life@ bshcools thread....so that every year puys post there summer experience on this thread only....

So that there is loads of good stuff in one package

Re: Life During SUMMERS - 06-05-2009, 12:40 PM

Rightoo..lets begin with my summer experience…before that lemme put my profile

I am an engineer
Work Ex: 2 years
Organization: Capgemini Consulting (worked as SAP Consultant)
Summers @ Standard Chartered Bank (Finance)

Well reached StanChart sharp @ 9’O clock in the morning on the first day of my summer internship. I was then introduced to my mentor. I was informed that my project will be on International Trade Finance. Well I had no clue as to what is meant my international trade finance and what m I supposed to do here…(actually paper on international trade is in 4th Trim).

My mentor asked me to read some material (StanChart internal books) on international trade finance and understand the business logic and business flow of trade. For the next 3-4 days I was busy understanding trade, LCs, negotiating banks, trade products etc etc…

Also the funade which were taught to us in MBA....NPV, IRR etc calculation was all done vey easily by the system…and there is no need for u to actually calculate these and various rations…the system does it all for u ( The power of IT u c )..anyways I knew from the very beginning that all these must be done my system J

I will put in more details after few days…

One thing I found the work culture and environment very different from IT work environment…. I must say in IT the infrastructure is outstanding and banks cant match that…That’s my feeling…here in banks lotta documentation is done and rules are very stringent…every documentation is done very meticulously ..which is quite evident being a bank u have to be very careful….

Re: Life During SUMMERS - 11-05-2009, 11:23 PM

gone are the days when i had the patience to write long posts...ab nahi hota...but ab MoM bhai ka thread hai toh post karna padega...

Company : Britannia
domian : SCM

Abt my project : My project is on developing an incident management system...an incident is any deviation from normal in an supply chain network...my current work includes understanding the current system and the network, listing various possible incidents in the britannia supply chain network and help britannia develop and implement a system for the same...

summers started on the 13th Apr with an induction @ bangalore...we reached there on the 11th itself...were put up in the guest house..went ard the city, infact attended a PG meet on the 11th @ bangy...

13th morning 9 AM, 32 of us abt 9 institutes were present for the induction...we had a half an hour session with the heads of each division who took us through all the functions at britannia...the star attraction was the session with the britannia MD Vinita Bali...was a pretty long day with the day ending at ard 8 PM...got a bag full of britannia biscuits in the end

Day 2 @ britannia and we were all supposed to meet our guides for a one to one discussions abt our projects...my guide quickly ran through what my project was and also give some insights on the deliverables...then he gave me a list of people i had to talk to, to get more info on my project...and there began my journey of meeting people for information...

getting an appointment to talk to people can really check your patience especially with people at headquarters (henceforth will be called as EO-executive office)...they sincerely wish to help you but are themselves so loaded with work that you might have to wait for a long time just for a small discussion...we all got used to this pretty soon...after talking to abt 15 odd people at the EO i was off the factory darshan ard bangy...

damn each of the factories are located to so far from the EO...got a cab from the company so conveyance wasnt a prob...but a visit to each factory would take the entire day...visited 3 factories and a depot in bangy...then i was off to visit factories in pondicherry, chennai and madurai...

i am current back in bangalore...4 weeks down 4 more to go...i am up for my mid term review soon...

PS : got my stipend today

Great to see chop again.....writing such a long post ...good project man..and ya as u got ur stipent its party time now

Well something from my side now ....
I have spent just over a month in this new environment and it has been a great learning experience for me…..i learned a lot of new things…how banks help companies in their working capital requirements..different types of bank credits..such as post shipment, preshipment, packing credit, discounting…..etc

How gold is imported and the role of banks in that…commodity hedging ( although its not exactly my project I have learned a lot by interacting ppl from different departments)…Just a piece of advice here…don’t restrict urself only to ur project or only to ur guide…build good rapport with other people also..different departments and don’t restrict urself to just one area…coz this is the only place were u can get real life learning..what exactly is being done in practical life and not the “Kitabi gyaan” which we usually get in classroom ….be inquisitive ..ask as many questions as possible…again u have to be proactive…no1 will come and tell you to learn xyz thing or do this and that….its you who have to take intiative and interact with ppl….

Rite now itna hi….will post more later…

And ya..when u are being paid for learning so much.....like u r getting sizzling brownie with lotta icecream

Well Well Nikhil bhai ne jab thread khol hi diya hai to post karna mangta hai

Though I dont know what to write about my summers... honestly I have not done much in all these 30 days :(

My role is more of assisting business development for the enterprise team in TATA Communications (remember the erstwhile VSNL?? )... Pura sarkari types job...yahan pe despite my repeated cringing, I am yet to get a detailed project plan and deliverables from my side.. God knows what I will write in my summers report...

Twice I have been sent to customer site with the technical guys to understand and give feedback on the project implementation scenario (And boy what a bashing we got from the Client :( As usual IT/ TELECOM --> LATE Delivery )
And did I tell you, I am back again in my Btech days understanding (rather learning ) the Networking terms like VPN, ATM, MPLS and what not..

I also did a lead generation assignment for my manager though I think its not as concrete as it should be.. Need to pursue it again once my guide comes back (Oh A BREAKING news: My guide is vacating on a India Tour ).....

Having joined with great expectations and left with only peanuts, I am trying to figure out whjat I should do in the 30 odd days that I spend with the company..

I am planning to understand the whole value chain right front he point a tender is floated and request for proposal is made till the implementation and handover is done.
At the same time, I am also pressing fellow managers (whomever I get hold of ) to take me with them when the make the sales pitch so that I too can have a look at the ART of PERSUATION

Puys, I am desperately short of ideas on how to spend the time fruitfully .. Please pour in if you have some better things to suggest..

I am BORED with this paid vacation thing
