HELP!!!Feel CHEATED!! Can a B-School refuse admission to a particular stream??

An acquaintance of mine joined a reputed (though not a Top 10) B-School in Mumbai through MMS admission to pursue management in the Finance stream.
The B-School had Finance, Marketing and HR streams of specialization.

After the first year the B-School has brought in rules saying that only TOP 120 students would be granted admission to the finance stream!!

There was no such clause on the brochure of the Mum university saying only top students would be given admission to a particular stream.
The college management says there are more students opting for Finance stream than the college can cater to.

can some one plz throw more light into this?

Many B schools generally have a max cap on the number of students opting for a specialization. This is because of many constraints like faculty availability, classroom division, class scheduling, etc. Since in the second year majority of the subjects are selected by students, the class scheduling becomes a big pain with classes happening at odd times and hence to keep all these factors under control there is a cap on max students taking a specialization.

Now what happens if there are more students opting for a specialization? Do they change the max cap?
Generally not. The college then specifies a criterion for selecting students on first cum first serve basis for a specialization until the max cap is reached. This criterion can be first year grade marks, or any other thing as decided by the authoroties. Sometimes it happens that they first give preference to merit students and then to the management quota students. This can vary from college to college.
I don't know about any such rule in Mumbai University but you'll always find one rule in the B schools, which is - "The decision of the management shall be final and rules can be amended if required"

Can't say what can be done in your case. Talk to them and negotiate, put pressure from parents. If there are large number of students facing this then might work. Good luck.

i feel this sud v been informed at the beginning of the year instead of towards the end of the academic year.

is there no standard rule from the university? these are not autonomous colleges anyway!!

hey.. i wanna ask diff kinda query.. wat if only 1or 2 students want sm specific specialisation...... will coll alow then to go for it...... or wil coll ask them to shift to other stream......... cause wat m observing is tht not many coll offering systems... as a specialisation... not at least tose which i went thr ........ but then wats the solutiun..

I think almost every college (barring a few exceptions) has the cap on minimum students.... Like for eg. if there are less than 15 students, the specialization may not be offered.... it entirely depends on the clg.... But atleast this thing is mentioned in their brochure.... However, the other concern is more valid I suppose since I have also not seen any such thing in the brochures... about the cap on max no. of students for a particular specialization

No, it surely isn't the solution.... But atleast you know beforehand that if you can't get together enough people for a particular branch, you have to make a compromise.

And here's where I believe comes your marketing skills to the fore How well you can market your branch and convince others.

Don't really think there's any other way out of this

Most colleges have a minimum cap for specializations as well, mostly between 10-15 as rightly told by avinav. Now what if you end up in the category of less than 10 students and wanting a specialization?

Well, for this you must keep a track of the history of the college. Like if you are planning for Operations Major and it was never given in the history of the college as a major specialization because of less than 10 ppl opting for it, then most probably you also wont get the same. So do a thorough research on the major and minor given by the college in the past before joining it. Else you'll have to take up some other specialization or end up taking a general specialization.

And the other way is to convince atleast 15 students in your batch to take up a specialization so that even the college can't refuse it.
