Final Placements 2008 - Brand Wars ? - 11-03-2008, 12:33 AM

Interesting, very interesting
I must say this is as good as it gets and one of the main reasons why you wannabe a manager
You must be wondering why???
Look at the course of events.....

Step 1: XLRI
-- Average Domestic Salary 14.75 Lacs (Previously Average 12.6 lacs)

Step 2: IIML
-- As always a NO Disclosure report

Step 3: IIMK
-- Average Salary 14.83 Lacs (Previously Average 12.8, Average Domestic 11.76 Lacs )

Step 4: FMS (MBA flagship only)
-- FMS comes up with placement report
-- Average Salary 15.31 Lacs (Previously Average Domestic 12.04 Lacs )

4 TOP B-Schools of the country jostling for that coveted position, strategising every move, thinking on their feet, doing what will best suit them
As someone said "Everything is fair in love & war & there is no time for love "

And if you are wondering who I am and why I am so excited, here is about me

Member, External Linkages == Media Relations Committee
XLRI, Batch of 2009

Now dont you wannabe a manager???
Congos to ALL institutes and may the Best Man win and also hope the market is mature enough

PS: Please do not bombard with all sorts of queries
1) Like others, I may also find it difficult to answer some questions and
2) I am not a regular in PG so may not reply soon

Dear Shades,

An interesting view point. Maybe doing an MBA does make one a cynic! By no means is this an attempt to make you see light!!, taking out a report first is not a certificate to not fudging numbers! You have a point though! However, a few facts here may make you re-think your view.Just pasting from above.
  • 23 international offers (Some more might be coming as intl interviews still in progress. Wonder how many of these instis. have that kind of intl. numbers)
  • 90% of batch getting salary greater than 10 L
  • 175k USD highest international salary
  • 29L highest domestic salary
  • Names like Arthur D Little, Dresdner Kleinwort, KPMG, Microsoft, Olam International, Oliver Wyman, OCBC Bank, & Reuters
  • 3 years in a row has IIM K got highest average salary after the big 3
Come on! lets give it to people when they have done well! Looking at the numbers above, which i doubt will be fudged: That these guys have done well is a no brainer!! Feeling strongly your institute is a wonderful thing!! Kudos for that! Ridiculing others even when they do well is a little sad! Maybe accepting others success, is not one of the strengths of current MBAs. FMS may have that high a salary, afterall they have only 90 odd students unlike other schools with twice or more students!! Fair enuff! Give it to them! Nonetheless, congratulations on wonderful placements for your institute. I pasted the data from the above report! I am sure others will have some great numbers to talk about too! How much truth is there in what some of the institutes say is anybody's guess! But being the optimist that one should be: May the market see the reality!! It always does!!!

Is the above figure the average "domestic" salary? Or does this also include the international salary converted into Rupees?

Great Placements ... BTW ..

Hey dude,

Firstly chill out...
In my post I have never tried to belittle any institute.
As budding managers we must all know that a 50K difference in salaries does not mean much (maybe yes for prospective students but not for us) and I definitely was not trying to highlight that...
I said congos to all colleges wholesomely and if you felt there was something sarcastic or ridiculing about it, I apologise for the same.. All I have done is list the course of events..
Congos to IIMK too for their awesome offers
But I believe blame must be equally given to the persons who gave your press releases for bringing this ambiguity in the minds of readers..

Please find below the link which says IIMK's average salary increased 16% from 12.8 Lacs to 14.83 lacs..
MBA Placement 2008 | IIM Kozhikode
12.8 Lacs last time was your average and I repeat not average domestic salary which was 11.76 Lacs..
Making a comparison with 12.8 Lacs and conviniently omitting the word domestic does tend to make us assume what is being revealed is average and not average domestic salary..

Please find below another link for one of your other claims
MBA Placement 2007
Last year definitely does not look like you were the best after top 3 though not sure which according to you is top 3 as that itself is highly debatable

Let me be very honest and I am not trying to stir a hornet's nest by contesting your claims..
I only made observations based on the available data and what I read in the media..
Everyone knows all the institutes here are very reputable and we do not need to get into mud slinging amongst one another.
Who knows if destiny has it we will be working together as the best collegues
And please no more discussions based on opinions or unconfirmed sources please..
Yes if you do have any reliable data contesting mine which does prove that you were the highest after "Top3" from past 3 years please do send in your reply.
Also if possible please ask your media cell to add the domestic clause so as to prevent any such confusions in future..
And finally kudos to all institutes and to IIMK esp for the awesome international placements..
To be frank I would have been proud to be a part of any of the 4 institutes..

Re: IIM Kozhikode Final Placements 2008 - 11-03-2008, 05:45 PM

Hi Guys,

One more thing let me clarify, in my previous post I thought both FMS and IIMK were talking about average salary and not average domestic salary.. (And I had sufficient reasons to think so)
And what I intended to show in my post was that after we gave the report, both the other institutes ( ie IIMK and FMS) were not ready to publish average domestic salary unlike last time wherein they had clearly mentioned their average domestic salary seperately..
Anyway since IIMK has clarified it is average domestic salary, I am proven wrong and maybe wrong about FMS also..
But frankly being in the media relations team, it still bugs me as to how could someone make such a basic mistake in their press releases
Maybe being a newbie, I am not aware of some of your PG protocols so admins please do excuse me if I am stepping over my limits by making such statements..
Hopefully I do not have to post again and others have understood my intentions were not derogatory to any institute in any way..
So no groans please as I have maintained a clean slate so far and do not want to tarnish it

Re: IIM Kozhikode Final Placements 2008 - 11-03-2008, 06:31 PM

Cant help but agree ..

I am surprised to see that the "domestic" word is not there in the report, even though you have calculated it. The officially released report is the one which must have had been reviewed by the faculty and other placements representatives from the college. Hence, putting it in the report would have given it more credibility.

Nothing against IIM K, and I had noticed the same thing in JBIMS, FMS and IIFT reports. I had objected about this and the Pagalguy team showed really prompt response. They had asked JBIMS to correct their report. Yesterday night, they took off IIM K, FMS and IIFT reports from the Bschool News section until the college clarifies. I just noticed that the IIM K report is back with the domestic word attached. Someone from the college must have clarified.

Also, on most of the reports, I found some useful and important data like the median, the lowest salary and other such parameters missing. I was surprised to see that XLRI did not publish separate figures for their BM and PMIR program. Even the company names were not separated as some companies might have come solely for the PMIR program.

Knowing these PG users and the PG team well, I have good reason to believe what you guys say. However, I still feel that the report which carries the maximum credibility would be the one published on the official college website. I hope these colleges correct their reports before publishing it on the official websites.

Regards
Ramesh

P.:S Sorry for bringing a general point on this thread. My intention is not to hijack this thread with this discussion but I felt raising this concern was important.

Point well taken! Just a slight correction. The link that you have mentioned on which you are basing your observations may not be accurate!! It mentions 12.35 as the avg domestic salary for IIM I , while as per their own report it was 10.7 last year. Likewise it maybe for a few other institutes. This is just one instance. Please cross check. As per my claim, there are places where the word domestic has been removed conveniently or "otherwise" for some (read xlri) institutes (with higher average domestic salary) placement reports last year at a lot of places! Cross check facts (Your placement report !!) again please at the same web site! . So i may not be wrong! For 2006 though, please check the same site(Cool Avenues 2006) So much about facts and assumptions .

On the flip side though! maybe you are right! there are instances when one does wonder about the convenient removal of the word "domestic". Like reports of a couple of top institutes last year! So it became a case of comparing apples and oranges! average domestic comparison to average! Maybe its time all B-schools came out together and decided on some code of conduct. May sound utopian though!

As per whether any of the IIMs or XL or FMS or others may be top schools! Never a question about that!! Top 3 i meant A,B,C in terms of salaries last year and not otherwise. Please do not misinterpret that!
