But there an NGO named ADOPT is helping the villagers to match the development process by providing technology to the villagers so that they can become self-sufficient. ADOPT is run by Mr. K.N.Banerjee who works for the upliftment of the villages.

We organized a trip to ADOPT and learn its functioning. The basic motive of this visit was to make students of management socially oriented. On the evening of 21st Feb. we reached Charba. As soon as we came out of the bus, me and my friends went into the jungle to enjoy the fresh air. Then under the direction of Mr. K.N.Banerjee , we visited the villagers and listened to their plight. Then after having dinner we made the plan for the next day. The plan included visiting the villages up the hill which are “adopted” by ADOPT. Next day, as we planned, we had to climb two hills to reach Mallawala, the adopted village. Trekking was the only option. It was exhaustive trekking but plight of the people gave us motivation to go and interact with them. Somehow we reached there.

After visiting the villages I came to know that these villages are in the need of more technological advancement. There were no hospitals or high schools. They only have a small plain land for farming and fresh air.

But as somebody has rightly said, one moment can change the mind of a person. This visit made us feel for the society. We can not move forward with this punctured wheel of the society.

I advice all b-schools to have the collaboration with NGOs as DoMS IITR has, so that we as a society move forward and make India, the country of equals.

As rightly said by Sachin, Commitment to society is what is needed from the new generation which has fallen a trap to the rat race behind money. We being budding managers, has to inculcate these values as well. We learnt how ADOPT helps villagers to achieve self sustainability through projects like bio-gas plant, ecological and economical toilets, primary education and water tanks... It was really an eye-opener trip for us

Well if Kashmir is Heaven on the earth,Then DOMS is the Utopia. We have a grandeur campus with a world class sports infrastructure .Life is damn hectic here and we have to work under an opressive study pressure ,at times we feel how transient are 24 hrs.But still we people earmark a decent amount of time to have fun.One thing which can qualify as the USP of DOMS is the dogged unity among the seniors.During our induction week our respectable seniors had to skimp on their sleeping hours to ensure the dissemination of every information to us.I have no words to express my gratitutde towards almighty for bestowing all the good people around me, in form of my batchmates. We have people from every possible domain be it IT industry, manufacturing, services ,banking etc.Well we are abiding a very strenuous and stringent time schedule.Sometimes we have to sit for four to five hours in a stretch in classes. But it is the knack of our professors which keeps us motivated and riveted .But value addition is something which is inevitable here at DOMS.

Re: Life@DoMS, IIT Roorkee - 29-07-2009, 06:24 PM

1st day at DOMS IITR..

With lots of expectations and apprehensions....I entered the DoMS IITR class room...

I found many faces thinking like me....Took a corner seat and the introductory session started by Prof.Nangia, the HOD..

After the congratulaions...some professors gave their prelude...

Now every student was asked to introduce him/herself to the class and state the reason for doing MBA..

I think this is the best part and this set the MBA mindset in the air..

The reasons for MBA given by many students were very clear, confident infact different...

Some of them said MBA as their passion, some said as value additon and astonishingly 8-9 students out of 70 have enterprenual

ideas...very few answers were related to corporate growth n career change...most of them are different and great..

There are people who are well experienced.about 8 years, from various places of India,Superb blend of cultures, age groups.

Students from top technical institutes like IITs,NITs,BITS....joined the 2009 batch.

An excellent fresher to workex ratio of about 1:2..

The crowd is really energitic, goal oriented and experienced which makes DoMS IITR to again set its own super league position in Indian B schools....

Lot more stuff about induction week in few more days....

Re: Life@DoMS, IIT Roorkee - 28-08-2009, 06:21 PM

It was Monday, July 27, 09, my first day in India’s one ofthe prestigious colleges, IIT Roorkee.

With lots of ideas and doubts, I entered the class room. I was late in the lecture by one hour the very firstday but that’s altogether a different story. I have justified reasons forgetting late. I knew no one in the class and same was the case with the rest of my batchmates. The lectures kept rolling, one after the other and I also kept learningnew faces and names. I must say that I am really bad at remembering the namesof people. This I had realized when I joined my first job as a software engg. 3years back. Then too I had a terrible fight remembering names.

I really appreciate the efforts put in by our seniors inorganizing a week long induction week. Hats off to them. They had planned quitea few events for us in the evenings after the class so that we may know eachother better as well as know the seniors better. These events really kept usbusy till late in the night and some of these events were really awesome. Allin all a really wonderful effort by the second yearites.

We have a good mix of people inour batch, both work-ex/freshers, ppl from varied parts of the country, withwork-ex in varied domains, although the Male-Female ratio is too bad. It seems that all are too focused towards their goal and will really strivehard to achieve their respective targets. Good Luck all.

One more thing, the IIT campus is a huge one. Our departmentis also far from our hostel. So I had to purchase a bicycle as my conveyance bcozmotor driven vehicles are a strict no in the institute for the students. So Isat on a bicycle after around 9 years or something. It was wonderful riding it.I was reminded of one of the hindi songs.
Here it goes:

Sone ki cycle,
Chandi ki seat,
Aao chalein Darling,
Chelein double – seat.

Ha ha ha ha.

Coming to the city Roorkee, it’s a small town. So Icertainly miss the life of Metro. There are no famous food chains, no PVRculture, etc. There is small canal which is a much frequented place by thepeople. I am yet to visit that. For movies, students go to Dehradun. Hardwar and Rishikesh are as well verynear. So one can easily go to these sacred places and (momentarily) get rid ofhis sins.

Last, I must say that I feel really proud of being part ofsuch a beautiful institute.
Cheers……..

DoMS IITRoorkee Organises UMANG'09 An event for social cause.

Umang, a regular event at Department of Management Studies, IIT Roorkee, aims to bring together the academia, non-government organizations, and future managers to facilitate ex-change of views and opinions on various social causes they represent.
It provides a platform to various stakeholders to interact on different socio economic issues faced and attempts to sensitize them on the same.
Umang is symbolic of the department’s constant endeavor to bring about a positive change in the mindset of future managers towards society.
The resounding success of Umang1, Umang2 and Umang3 held from 2006 every year has encouraged DoMS, IIT Roorkee to carry the idea forward. Hence we bring to you Umang4, a one day event on “Social Entrepreneurship”, which aims to connect academia, non-government organizations, future managers, and social entrepreneurs and elucidate the aspect of Corporate Social Responsibility. The event will focus on the best practices of starting and growing a successful social mission driven venture, the challenges associated with social ventures and creative ways of overcoming such challenges.
This year Umang is scheduled on 12th October with the eminent speakers coming from various NGOs related to social entrepreneurship and many NGOs in the country participating in the event.
