Dept of HSS, IIT Kanpur conducted a short term course on Global Financial Management from 4th to 13th February 2009. The course was taken by Prof. Dr. Michaela M. Kiermeier, Professor Financial Management, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, Germany. Dr. Michaela, an expert in portfolio management, have visited many universities around the world and conducted short term courses in Finance.

First and second year MBA students who wanted to specialize in finance were also invited to attend the course. The main objective of the course was to make the students understand and adapt to changing and challenging global environment. The course also enabled the students to acquire and apply knowledge and tools in various financial areas to solve business problems in global context. The course helped students to get introduced to global financial management. It also assisted the future managers to get acquainted with concepts, activities and management techniques related to the planning and coordination of international aspects of finance, portfolio management, and risk management.

Lectures, discussions and case analyses formed the course pedagogy. Students took presentations as part of the performance evaluation and participated in the discussions. At the end of the course Dr. Michaela was happy to see a group of young and dynamic professionals who were keen to know each and every nuance in the field of finance.

The Board of Governors of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) taking a note of the tragic death of Shri Satyendra K Dubey, an alumnus of IITK who died fighting against corruption, had instituted the Satyendra K Dubey Memorial (SKDM) Award for honoring outstanding alumni of the IIT system i.e. all existing Indian Institutes of Technology, who have shown professional integrity and have been upholding human values
The presentation ceremony of the Distinguished Alumnus Award and the Satyendra K. Dubey Memorial Award was held on the occasion of the Alumni Day (Annual Alumni Convention) of the Alumni Association of IITK i.e on the forenoon of Saturday, February 28, 2009.


The dignitaries present at the occasion were :

The presence of such luminaries in our midst was an inspiring experience. All of them had stories to tell related to the campus and their journey since then. More than anything else, it gave a glimpse to the students present of where they should be heading and what they could possibly achieve.

Dudes and dudettes,

I declare this thread formally open for Season '09 !


Reached IITK on the 21st. No hostels ... yet for the MBA junta. First a barrack was given and later on we were shifted to sharing flats


Nowadays, we are going thru the orientation and classes will formally commence from the 27th. Days are being spent cycling around, trying out the food in all the halls and random bakar.

Met a lot of "pagal"oos in my batch. Some being hemantkakkar, dextar, bonniebasu, ATP, riyo8 et al.


Key takeaways garnered till now -

1) Riyo8 ko ek cycle aur Wifi connection dedo to ye 5 saal tak bina khana khaaye zinda reh sakta hai.

Hi All

So our first week ahs nealry gone past here at IITK.We have been through with nearly all the admission formalities here such as id card making,submission of documents ,medical check up. I'm really loving this huge campus which is so well maintained with olympic size swimming pool, well equipped tennis courts and other sports facilities(Still need to explore more!!!).Cycle is a big relief and is a must here!!!

And yes met the pg junta here at iitk.

Ah, all pain is over. Almost, all settled. Everybody has got hostel, a day before the promised date. Internet is also running and classes are on full swing.
IIT K is a heaven for them who want to live on their terms. Not much pressure is there, but emphasis is given on self study and exploration.

The "MBA grill" has started. The other day we got reading material from a prof at 11.30 PM due next morning !
Noticed another sign that we are on our way to become managers - we debated on 2 paragraphs for 1.5 hrs in an accounting class... talking all kinds of crap ! (And i heard we r gonna get paid for this kind of thing 2 yrs later )

Finally the Induction Programme for us by the Seniors is over. It was a real good expereince for us and hope we continue this newly adopted trend for the coming batches. The information passed to us by the seniors will surely help us in the long run.

Life here is all about case studies, presentations and projects but there is a lot of time for other activities like swimming, lawn tennis , cricket etc.etc.

Mr. Narayanmurthy who is our alumnus is on the campus to inaugrate the Golden jubilee celebrations and the informal session with him is something one won't forget.

The torture is all over and freshers is just a few hours away. Hope we get to know all our seniors nd enjoy freshers a lot coz maybe its going to be our last freshers party.

Hall 10 the newly constructed hostel for MBA 1st year students was on fire for the whole day. The environment was enthralling,exciting and superbly energetic. Throughout the day practice was going on for the various performances to be performed at freshers. Everybody wanted to do something or the other.

Finally came the time for freshers and it started as per the Indian time (1 hour late) but the competition for Mr. and Ms. freshers was exciting and amazing. Odd questions were put up and contestants(whole class) replied in the different odd ways. But overall it was a very entertaining act. Freshers gave various dance,singing,and guitar performances and seniors were also amazed at the talent our batch had. After the dance performances the floor was open for all to dance and we had a real gud time dancing with our batchmates as well as seniors.

Overall a very Rocking Freshers party was thrown at us by our seniors and we hope to have many more such parties in the future

Now that we have entered into the third week of our academic curriculum the pressure is increasing per second. Today we had two surprise quizzes in two consecutive classes and it was real fun to have surprise quiz which have a weightage in your final grades.

More and more deadlines have to be met in less and less time but there is good part to it as well. Late night discussions over a cup of cofee in anteen, project and assignment meetings in the canteen at 1 am in the night, interviews for various clubs and cells etc. etc. have become an integral part of life and has helped us a lot in building strong relationship amongst us. Our batch strength is a blessing in disguise for us as its like a family and all members are contributing their part for the family.

The best part of life here is that there are a hell lot of extra curricular activities and sports to participate in and even a lifetime would be short to take part in all the activities. Events organized by Business club and guest lecture by Senior consultant of Boston consultancy group gave us an extra edge over others. A lot of things are being learnt by us outside the classroom from these evnts as well as from our peers and this is what MBA is all about and is not about classroom learning but much more than that.
