Article by 2nd Year--Dedicated to DoMS - 07-04-2007, 02:33 PM

DoMS IITM – A Salute!

When we met Professor LSG for the first time as a class, he said," Mark my words. These 2 years will be over in a wink. Make the best out of them." He was right. These two years have flown, but not without their share of memories etched in our minds forever. The batch of 2007 at DoMS, IIT Madras has been hailed as the 'Breakthrough Batch' of the Department. We are a batch who have an eclectic mix, and represent almost the nation itself, from Kashmir to Kerala. Yet there is unity in this diversity. We have some accomplishments to be proud of, yet we pray our juniors exceed those by miles. We were able to bring back our annual business-fest, Samanvay 2007 with a bang. We were able to record excellent placements and announce to the corporate world that DoMSians mean serious business. We were able to receive accolades from the corporate world and other management institutes nationwide. But the learnings from these two unforgettable years have been beyond these adulations.
~

DoMS IITM has taught us not just management in the corporate world, but personal management and how to be a better human being. Our professors have gone beyond teaching; they have and will be our mentors and inspiration for success. Without them we would still be the raw clay as we entered two years ago. Our beloved professors have moulded us into managers with dedication, affection and utmost care. When the course curriculum was revamped and made more strenuous, we knew it was for our good. If not for the battering we had in our vivas, we would not faced the corporate world with panache and confidence. If not for the support by our professors, we would never have been able to make Samanvay 2007 happen, let alone other events. They have been our pillars and have shown us the way to success.
~

From now on, it is upto us, to take the torch forward, and follow QED to the spirit, make good global citizens and proudly wave the DoMS IITM flag to the world! There cannot be a better department in IIT Madras than DoMS. Wherever we go, whatever we achieve, we shall bow our heads to the DoMS spirit.
~

Samanvay 2007-Celebrating Synergy

What do I do, if I have so much fire within?
Or to know how it feels to create somethin?
I have waited so long to compete and play,
To outperform the world this very day,

The realization of all values that I have learned,
An embodiment of team spirit adorned,
It is better to have failed than to have not tried,
Patience is the key; it’s a matter of pride,

Come along and enjoy the ride,
MBAs, PGs, PhDs alike,
It’s time for us to lead the way,
We‘re celebrating synergy at SAMANVAY…..

Event - CII-CW Session - Talk on "The Human Resource Function- Integrator"

(Mr. Arun Leslie George addressing the students @ DoMS, IIT Madras)
-

CII - Corporate Wisdom Session
Date: 15th March, 2007
Venue: DoMS 101

Yet another event conducted by the Corporate Wisdom team, saw the coming together of two eminent personalities from the Human Resource Management fraternity representing CII (Confederation of Indian Industry). The two speakers were Mr. Arun Leslie George and Mr. P. Padmakumar.

Mr. Arun Leslie George who was part of the Murugappa Group since 1990 currently heads the HR function of the Farm Inputs Business i.e. Coromandel Fertilizers Ltd. and GFCL of the Murugappa Group. Mr. P. Padmakumar who also earlier worked with the Murugappa Group, is currently responsible for HR in the Flat Glass Business of Saint Gobain India Ltd.

They started off the session stressing on the importance of the Human Resource, touted as the most important asset of the company, which could make or break a company. HR has been going through different phases as the differentiating resources have changed over time starting with land long ago to people in the current day scenario.

Mr. Arun’s spirited speech interspersed with the right amount of humor, addressed how an Indian management could make a difference in foreign organizations. He started it by giving a concrete example aptly named ‘the Foskor Experience’, a strategic investment in a South African company. While elucidating responses from the audience, he spoke about how crucial showcasing capabilities and institutionalizing the knowledge process was. He also spoke about the various approaches to preparing the organization for such an event, managing the various stages of adaptation the executives undergo and also constantly monitoring the employees in order to minimize cultural shocks and maximize performance of employees. Mr. Padmakumar spoke on the HR aspect of creating a ‘World Glass Complex’ and how it was important to project India as a force to reckon with and showcase its blend of heritage and modernity. He elaborated on the role of HR across the organization in areas such as structuring, developing skills and culture etc through various frameworks. He concluded his presentation with an animation that chalked out the ‘Journey of Saint Gobain’ in India.

(Prof. Anantharaman (left) presenting mementos to Mr. Arun Leslie George (right) and Mr. P. Padmakumar (centre). )
This was followed by a Q&A session which brought out the merits of HR as a career option and also the importance of having a sound knowledge of the conceptual aspects and the correct application of this knowledge. All in all, this engaging session portrayed HR as a lucrative career option and one that would make students look at HR from a new perspective challenging their earlier beliefs.

Farewell Party 2007

Beedi, the classic number from ‘Omkara’ was the song that bought the first few rowdies on to the dance floor….then slowly followed others……and finally the girls joined in even though they would have liked some decent foot tapping number to begin with. The mood seemed to be all set for a party that would drag on well past midnight and with the copious flow of branded beverages, everyone simply swayed into the mood. Soon some fast track Tamil songs of the likes of Apudi Pode, Saraku Vicharake and Randaaka took the breath away from the frenzied guys and gals. This isn’t a scene out of a freaking pub in Bangalore, instead the venue was VGP Resorts in Chennai, where we had hosted the farewell party for our seniors (MBA Batch of 2007).

The place has to be seen to be believed- coconut and palm trees swaying in the gentle breeze of the nearby sea, the high tides owing to a beautiful full moon and a handsomely lighted vast lawn just besides the beach. Such was the paradise where we chose to bid adieu to our seniors. The evening had been fun with junta playing football and beach volley, while a few others preferring to stay cool by swimming either in the sea or in the nearby swimming pool. As the bodies started sweating profusely due to non-stop dancing, it was time for some rest and a sumptuous dinner, which had yummy dishes prepared by the specially chosen caterer. Desserts such as ice creams and gulab jamun soon followed and helped the freaks to gain most of the energy lost.

It was time again to hit the dance floor, though many preferred to sit and chit-chat, the seniors sharing memories of their two years ‘managing’ themselves in the Management course at DoMS, IIT Madras while the juniors getting more and more inquisitive and apprehensive about the year that was to follow. Lots of gyan, gossips and friendly swearing got exchanged only to be followed by as many cuddles and hugs. It was as if that was the only night to rejoice with the closest of friends…….and we as organizers simply loved the sight.

Then there were song dedications to vent deep feelings, be it secret ones or quite open ones, nevertheless they found an opportunity to get expressed. At around 1 o’ clock, we finally decided to call it quits, some out of fatigue and the rest out of fear of getting into the class on time, the following morning…….and there were still others for whom the night had just begun…..they were trying to form circles out of cigarette smoke sitting on the lonely beach!!!

Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna – our only message for our beloved seniors!!!

Re: Life@DoMS,IIT Madras - 18-04-2007, 05:40 PM

The changing face of rural economy: its relationship with banking arena
“Change is the only constant” – This constant state has brought a lot of positive growth for rural India. The Indian rural economy is booming! The role of managers in this scenario has gained a never before importance. The new dimension to dynamically changing management was added to the future managers of DoMS, IIT Madras by none other than Mr. P.V. Ananthakrishnan (Executive Vice President, HDFC Bank). The topic in spotlight was “Role of Banks in Agri, Commodity & Rural Economy”.
Mr. Ananthakrishnan is a seasoned banker with more than twenty five years of work experience in public & private banks. He is a well known name in commercial banking area. His association with HDFC bank goes way back from 1995. He won laurels in the banking sector by setting up capital market business for HDFC bank.
The agenda of the discussion included commodity markets, future & spot market. Changing role of bankers and rural banking was also discussed.
Sixty five percent of India is related to agriculture. This massive figure calls for a thrust to cut across and rise above the constraints, bias and gaps hindering the growth of backbone of our economy. This change can only be possible through “Innovation”.
The Indian mindset has always been inclined towards manipulations, predictions and some calculated risk – the name of the game (in business context) - trading. Futures trading with respect to price discovery, price risk management, hedging, price dissemination & balancing supply – demand has gained importance. The new face of future trading is adapting itself to changes in weather & other dynamic variables. There also exists a causal relationship between future trading and politics. The advent of elections has always created a huge impact on the fluctuation of prices either logically or beyond rationality!
Mr. Ananthakrishnan also spoke about the importance of forecasting for the seed sowing preferences to Indian farmer. Commodity markets in India is witnessing a never before phenomenal growth. The figure now touches the skies with a 4000000 crores business annually. The long value chain of commodity market is now trimmed down by czars of modern trade, establishing a new role for bankers to play. The role is famously called – “the Catalyst”. Thus banks help in clearing, depository services, information dissemination, aggregating, trading & advisory services.
Speaking on the challenges to the future markets, Mr. Ananthakrishnan created awareness about the broad basing of volumes, political sensitivity, speculative volume, regulated developments & contract farming.
During the discussion a new form of finance emerged out. It’s famously called “structured finance”. Mr. Ananthakrishnan defined it as – “the art of transferring the risks from parties less able to bear the risk to those more equipped to bear it”. Thus rural banking is the area to be concentrated by young managers. It poses huge challenges like the enforcement of lender’s rights, high dependency & lack of commercial approach. The challenges can only be handled effectively by well equipped future managers. Mr. Ananthakrishnan was quite successful in generating the first spark about rural banking in the young managerial minds.

Well,
Quarter 4 is over and now everyone is packing there bags , either heading to there native or to there inter location.
Every body is carrying mixed feeling as they are happy that exams are over and its now time to get some industry exposure, but at the same time to say good bye to the batch of 2007 and to realize that we have only a year left in IIT, does motivate us to work even harder and raise the bar for the forthcoming batches.

First year has been way beyond what we expected when we joined IIT M and hopefully year 2 will be even better.

Eagerly waiting for the batch of 2009.

Re: Life@DoMS,IIT Madras - 21-05-2007, 11:55 AM

Before we left IIT M campus on May 4th, we had a session organized by faculty to help us with our electives. Second years marks the begining of our specialization.

This session was an initiative from our faculty advsior and other faculty members activly toook part in it to satisfy students concerns regarding various electives.

Mkting,HR,Fin,Operations and IT where covered.

The session was opened by our HOD Prof LS Ganesh who emphisized on the the type of mix one should look for and its not the money which should be the priority but the career and the zeal to work in that field for next 30 years.

Overall, a very enlightining experience.

As the internship for everyone has begun, class mates are doing it in different parts of the country. From Delhi to Chennai, from Mubai to Kolkatta and few lucky one's frm New York to Malaysia.....

A good time to get industry exposure before the next sem starts which will lead us into placements.

Though DoMS is quite, but the activities are still going on the in the office, to select the juniors aka batch of 2009 and giving out our 1st yr grades.

In the background, Placement team and PR team are working on take DoMS to newer heights.

SOme words from batch of 2007 pass out - 14-06-2007, 11:32 AM

In 2005 we entered as null,
In 2007 we go out as full,

Individual differences have always been,
But when we stand united they are never seen,

When we enjoyed amongst our fraternity,
They are memories that stay for eternity,

Four in a room, we never complained,
In them blood brothers we gained,

The lab has been our favorite hangout,
Sitting together for unforgettable nightouts

Evolved we have with our department- those are good ol' days,
Been part of its growth phase,

Now when we move out,
Success beckons us without a doubt,

No one else to us is a match,
For we are the Breakthrough batch.

When me meet each other sometime,
These we will recall, which were etched in time.

Farewell dear buddies,
Awaiting us are more goodies.

R.Siddharth
