1st few days in DoMS!! -
20-03-2007, 12:33 AM
DOMS- The experience so far
By Varsha Sehgal
1st Year MBA
DOMS – IIT Madras……..It’s been around 2 weeks since I landed up here and so far the experience has been amazing. We were asked to report on 26th July. After a brief registration process in the morning, the formal orientation session began at 2 pm. The department faculty was formally introduced. The Director formally welcomed us to the institute. Student introductions were done. Later a documentary “The Corporation” was screened.
Later in the night we had an introduction session with our seniors. So the first day was over in a jiffy. Some of us had parents leaving and those tearful goodbyes, but anyway all of us were looking forward to a new phase…
A 3 day orientation session followed. We were told about the library, Student Activities Centre and so on. Various Guest lectures were scheduled. The orientation ended on the 29th with a formal question & answer session.
IIT Madras goes with a quarter system where each quarter has 7 weeks. The 8th week is the exam week. So right from the first day the faculty made it clear that effort has to be put in from the beginning itself. There will be surprise quizzes, presentations, assignments and what not. In fact our first marketing assignment required us to go out to the streets of Chennai and gather data about various items like toothpaste, soap etc.
I guess I am still finding my way around. The pressure has begun. We are divided into groups and almost every day I find myself trying to juggle this with that. In addition we have the selections for the placement committee, the SAC, the sports secretary etc going on. We had a formal fresher welcome on 5th and a informal fresher welcome on the 6th. The informal party was a total blast with music blaring at full blast. All of us just let our hair down and had a great time. The seniors have come out in full support and I only hope that our batch can live up to the benchmark they have set.
Hostels facilities are good with single rooms and net connection. I guess IIT has done its bit. It’s up to us to show what we can do………

Induction and Freshers Party!! -
20-03-2007, 04:49 PM
DOMS ----So far ,15th Aug 2006
(By:VARSHA SEHGAL. 1st year MBA)
A chapter ends and another begins. After countless waitlists in the various interviews I had given I thought that I would end up getting a waitlist in IIT which would lead to another loooooooooooooooooooooooooooong wait. Probably that’s the reason when I saw the “Congratulations” on the computer screen I immediately scrolled down for a waitlist number. Silly me thought I was being congratulated for the waitlist.
But seriously it still has not sunk in yet. I have been here 2 weeks and I am still in awe of the place, the faculty, the seniors …….basically everything here is Amazing.
The distance from the IIT Gate to the DOMS is a good 3-4 kms and as the auto drove up the first time….all I could think ….This place feels different. This is one beautiful campus… and with the monsoon drizzling down……the scenic view is breathtaking. Its almost as if the air inspires u to get going. The city is left far behind & the strive for excellence takes over.
We were officially welcomed to the institute in a formal orientation session on the 26th July. Most of it was faculty introductions, student introductions and a general briefing. Later in the night we had interaction with the MBA 2nd year. We were asked to prepare presentations on “My favorite company” and it turned out to be great fun coz almost all of us were rushing here and there for relevant info.
The orientation was a 3 day thing and we were given a general feel about the institute, the library, rules & regulations etc. various guest lectures were conducted.
Our fresher’s party was held last weekend. On Saturday we had official freshers by the department. The fun part was all of us were divided into groups of two and given a senior nickname and we were asked to find out his/her real name. This led to a lot of juniors seriously orkutting away, running after seniors trying to find out their senior. Of course A Mr Fresher & Ms Fresher was chosen on the basis an introduction round & a Question & Answer round. Our group was supposed to come up with a dance, song & play but we got lost somewhere in between and managed a medley only. However the medley was a success with seniors & juniors joining away in the end. Later the movie ‘Italian job’ was screened and we finally got back to the hostel at around two...
The unofficial party absolutely rocked. It was held at a hotel in Chennai and was a dance party end to finish. It was a total blast with seniors and juniors just letting their hair down and dancing their way to glory. The senior batch has gone out of its way to help us feel comfortable and we only hope that we will be able to live up to the benchmark set by them.
Well, The fresher party is over and classes have begun. Being at IIT is a dream come true and the pressure works on each one here. However we study hard……. We party even harder………………….

Achievers!! -
21-03-2007, 03:58 PM
DoMS Rocks …again! Taking DoMS to newer heights!
DoMS has always been ‘Quietly’ making waves all over and ‘Demonstrating’ its ‘Excellence’! And this time, it was on a higher level; both geographically (being an International event) and academically (check out the participation profiles).
Courtesy: None other than the creative duo of our class, Prashant and Priya!
Prashant and Priya won the first prize at ‘The Athenaeum’, an International Conference on HR and IT Management. The conference was conducted by BIM, Trichy in a large auditorium in BHEL campus. The conference was on a very large scale. It was attended by domain experts and practitioners from both education and corporate world. So, most of their competitors were almost double their age!
Just to give some examples on the profile of their competitors:
1. Research Scholars from Institutes like IIT Kharagpur, Madras University, etc.
2. Professors from institutes like IMT Ghaziabad, ICFAI, IIT Kharagpur, FMS, NIT
3. Directors of some colleges.
4. International participants (including Corporates and PhDs) from Mexico, Canada, Pakistan, Dubai, etc.
5. Corporates and Consultants from Satyam Computers.
6. And ofcourse, Students from various top colleges across India.
The participants were given freedom to present a research paper on any topic they were passionate about. For the HR category, 21 papers were short-listed to be presented at the conference. This included 16 National papers and 5 International papers. Prashant and Priya presented on “Employer Branding”, which with increasing competition, has become vital in the long run survival of any company. They were highly appreciated for their creativity and views on the topic by the chief guest as well as all other participants. It was thus an apt example of “QED” by DoMS.
All research papers presented were complied into a book, “Perspectives on HR and IT Management” edited by P David Jawahar and Ramesh Venkatraman. The book, priced at 499 INR, was also presented to all participants. The event was actively covered by media. DoMS was the center-point of attraction at the conference.
This victory has taken DoMS to greater heights and we shall not relent at this. This is just a beginning and an inspiration for all of us to continue our efforts in attaining even more accolades.
