Re: Life @ DMS, IIT Delhi - 27-01-2008, 07:09 PM

Well, what is a Life@ DMS thread without anything about the life in the campus? I will try to explain in brief the life of a typical B School-er in IIT Delhi.

An introduction first – My name is Rahul Iyer. I am in the 1st year and the coordinator for the media committee.

So what is it like being in IIT?

1) Everyone gets a room in the campus in one of the many hostels there are. The rooms are predominantly twin sharing, but with a partition in the middle, everyone has his/her own private space. There are some single accommodation rooms which are usually given to the 2nd year students. The hostels are a mixed bag with people from all courses and all years living together. But as a PG student, you can surely expect being respected; being called Sir by the hostellers is quite common. The idea is to help interact with people from all courses. An MBA remember is a lot about the networks you build! Every hostel has a TT table, and a small shop for your photocopying, STD, binding requirements.

2) The sports facilities and those for extra curriculars is unmatched. In fact the facilities are so enticing, you will at most times feel a dearth of time to avail them. We have clubs for most activities including a Student Activity Centre (SAC) which you will hear a lot about in case you join DMS. We have a cultural fest called Rendezvous every year and we have a business fest of our own which is called Parivartan. The event is scheduled for the mid of Feb this year. Visit the site http://www.dms-parivartan08.com/ for more details..

3) Night canteens and Nescafe coffee parlours are open all night long. There is one small kiosk right in the middle of the area where the boys’ hostels are and is very accessible. You will find me there at most times of the night! J There is a hostel gate outside which you will have a bread omlette and tea guy till late into the night.

4) There is a mess in each of the canteens. You can avail the food available there, 3 times a day. The class timings are such that there is a break for you to run to your hostels, have ur meals and re-assemble for classes. So it works out.

5) The hostel rooms are fitted with 24 hr LANs. Sometimes the LAN is slow in the wake of the no. of users is using it. There is however a LAB in the DMS building which is open in the day time for use by the students. Also there is a Lounge area on the 3rd floor which is fitted with high speed ports and can be connected too using a laptop and a lan cable. There is also a central computer centre for use by the students all day long.

6) There are stores inside the campus where everything for everyday consumption is available in appropriate prices. Remember that most profs also stay in the campus with their families and these stores provide them with most things. There is a Faculty Guest house which can be used to accommodate ur immediate family in case they decide to come visiting, for a very nominal charge.

7) The campus is as such huge though not as big as the rest of the IITs. For all walkers, joggers and people who love greenery J, this is paradise! Being in the centre of the city is a big plus as you have buses and autos to every place in the city. The railway station is half an hour away and the station only 15 mins drive away. The ISBT bus terminus is a little far off (abt 15 kms) but then in Delhi, most things seem to be!!!!

8 ) Coming to DMS, we have the best professors for most subjects as has been mentioned in a post above by Avijeet. I will not delve much into that except say that these people are respected a lot in the industry and it is one of our prime privileges to be taught by them. For more information, visit the IITD MBA site and visit the profiles section for the profs.

9) There is a canteen within the building catering to your most day time food requirements. There is an underground parking available for cars in DMS itself. Ok, motor cars are not allowed to be parked in the campus by campus-residing students.

10) There is a Central Library and a departmental library subscribing nearly everything there is to read!!! So all you readers can just walk in there and pick up anything of interest. Also the best thing abt being in IIT is that you can enroll for any of the courses. This includes foreign languages which many of us first years have enrolled into.

So these basically are a 10 point introduction to being in DMS! Let me know in case you have any particularly specific query and I would love to address/answer them to the best of my ability. As always, there is an admissions committee here which will be answering most of your queries.

Re: Life @ DMS, IIT Delhi - 28-01-2008, 07:38 AM

Some other aspects about the campus life here

1. Motivating yourself to wake up for(and attend) 8 AM lectures on chilly winter days, and then realising after 2 hours, that it was totally worth it!!

2. Working non stop to solve cases, analyse industries, making B Plans that you lose track of day and night.

3. Just when you think that you are the most burdened with work amongst your batchmates, you meet someone and you realise that its a feeling prevalent amongst each one of us, and that itself serves as a binding factor and motivates us to greater heights!

4. DJ Parties on Saturday nights, meeting friends in Nescafe at 3 AM without making any plans of meeting them, and ending up spending 2 hours just yapping

Some aspects my friends haven't covered, which I thought I need to mention . Ciao guys, I have a lecture at 8!! :P And its freezing!! :(

Consulting Symposium 2007
The 22nd of September 2007 at Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi was marked by the first of its Symposium in the Annual Rostrum Series “The Consulting Symposium”. The Rostrum Series – a series of national-level seminars at DMS, IIT Delhi, is known to initiate discussions on burning issues related to contemporary business challenges. The engaging sessions and the appetizing Q&A sessions that customarily follow provide a great opportunity for students to interact closely with the very best in the industry and academia.
The symposium’s focus was on the consulting vertical and the theme of the event was “Emerging Avenues and Challenges in the Global Arena“. The event played host to some very eminent speakers from companies of great repute in the domain of Consulting. We had speakers from some of the consulting bigwigs such as A T Kearney, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, BristleCone, Protiviti, IBM, Avalon Consulting and JuxtConsult giving us insights on the challenges and opportunities in the consulting field.
Session I
The inaugural session of the day witnessed Mr. Kaustav Mukherjee from A T Kearney Limited, the global management consulting major. Mr. Mukherjee is the Vice President and Partner with A.T. Kearney Limited. Speaking on the occasion, he quoted the significance of the consultant in today’s environment as someone who uses his/her talent to generate ideas that last. A global traveler having worked worldwide, Mr. Mukherjee gave a good account of the consulting scene globally and opportunities that is available in India today as an emerging market. He also spoke about the challenges faced by the big consulting firms. Nothing could sum up the rise of India and its opportunities in the Consulting sector as much as Mr. Mukherjee’s statement that he ‘wanted to be born 20 years later than when he was born’ would sum it up. In response to a question from the audience, he mentioned that - even to a reputed company like A T Kearney, losing a consultant to pressures of work is the biggest loss.
Mr. Mukherjee was in the esteemed company of Ms Kalpana Jain, Senior Director at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India Pvt. Ltd. in Financial Advisory Services practice. She gave a fresh new dimension to the discussion, explaining the importance of cultural sensitivity in this new era of consulting. She also emphasized on adopting different work cultures to cater to different needs of clients. She talked about the workload of typical consultant’s life.
Session II
The second session saw Mr. Ramit Gupta, Associate Vice President with Avalon Consulting talking about key enablers of consultancy as globalization has evolved. He further explained the trends in de-verticalization of the value chain, citing examples from global and domestic industry.
The students, then, got an opportunity to interact with Mr. Shobhit Gupta, Associate Director, in the Risk Consulting Practice of Protiviti, India. He underlined change as the genesis of consultancy. He talked about how avenues were always open but how these avenues can be better capitalized on today. He compared different consulting firms on the basis of their clientele, popular perceptions, technical aspects etc. He further spoke about being able to predict risk as a key indicator of consulting efficiency.
Next up was Mr. Gaurav Sharma, a Managing Consultant within the communications practice at IBM India. He brought out the effectiveness quotient of a consulting firm by focusing on the program management aspect. He talked about the keys of project success and spoke about managing the basics as an important means of achieving the objectives. He, even, stressed on the importance of working in teams.
The final speaker of the day was Mr. Mrityunjay Mishra, from JuxtConsult India. He added a new dimension to the discussion by talking about online research and advisory services as an effective tool to help arrive at effective Consulting decisions.
Keeping with the aim of generating an Industry – Student thought synthesis, DMS organised a case study competition for its students. Teams that presented to the panel of judges were shortlisted from an extensive list of preliminary participants by Mr. Samir Shukla, Senior Consultant at BristleCone.
There was a lot to learn for the students of DMS on this eventful day..The audience got an idea of the highs and lows of being a consultant, got a dose of the kind of lifestyle they lead and also learnt of the challenges faced by them. The young enthusiasts looking for a career in Consulting had a lot to take away from the invigorating sessions.

Entrepreneurship support systems awareness program
On 15th Nov 2007 a SIDBI sponsored Entrepreneurship support systems awareness program was held in DMS. The program was conducted in two phases-in the first phase we had eminent speakers from the Govt. of India who told us about the various incentives and training program that are being held all over the country to promote entrepreneurship. The second phase of the program had people from the industry who enriched the students with their own personal experiences.
The program was chaired by Dr.S.K.Jain who has more than 100 research papers to his credit and presently is a member of the National IPR committee of the Govt. of India besides being the professor of managerial economics at DMS.

Then Ms.Manisha Sridhar, Joint Secretary, National Entrepreneurship Committee in the Govt of India addressed the gathering. She enriched the students by telling us about the initiatives that are taken by the Govt of India to encourage entrepreneurship and new entrepreneurial ventures.
She gave an insight into the MSME Act 2006 and its various facets. She also emphasised the fact that in India the proportion of the unorganized entrepreneurship is much greater.

After such an enriching presentation we had an address by Dr.Waali who is from the Business Incubation Unit at IIT-Delhi. He gave an insight about the transfer of technology and the IPR management. He also told us about the incubation programmes which includes the technology transfer from the creators to the actual users. He stressed on the fact that the incubation is basically a synergy between the industry and the incubator.
After the first phase which gave the technical aspects of the entrepreneurship, the second phase had people from the industry who told us about their own personal experiences and how they overcame all the risks and problems. We had the benefit of the experiences of Mr.Mahesh Gupta from Kent R O water purifiers, Mr. P K Padhi who was from Kellogg School of management, Columbia among others.
It was truly a very fruitful interaction and we will be looking forward to more of such kinds of interactions.

True, a person with DLT specialisation is free to go to any field he wants. And the best part is the extra advantage that they get for telecom specific projects in IT companies and ofcourse all the telecom companies themselves. This batch telecom students have gone into marketing, finance, HR and all. So when it comes to your placements, there is no difference.

Re: Life @ DMS, IIT Delhi - 08-04-2008, 11:52 PM

Taking another step away from the ordinary, we had a lecture by Swami Bodhananda. Swami Bodhananda is highly respected in America and India as an accomplished teacher of Vedanta and meditation and is the Spiritual Founder and Director of 12 organizations and ashrams under the umbrella of the Sambodh Foundation. He delivered amazing insights into strategy based on ancient texts such as chanakyaniti. This was coupled with a discourse on values and ethics. This interaction was a very different experience for students as opposed to the usual industry guest lectures we have regularly. This also gave us a totally different perspective of things which is something that is strongly encouraged at DMS; thinking differently.

Well to start with, coming to DMS has led to a complete changeover in my personality. An evidence happens to be the reduced rate of PG'ing (and orkutting ), but thats the initial phase where everyone is too short on time. As we settle, we have learnt to manage everything. The faculty at DMS, IITD is beyond any acknowledgement, coz whatsoever words I use would fall short of the amazing credentials they attach to themselves. Well, i can go on and on on each faculty member, and it would cover up the whole thread The good thing about the faculty is that they encourage practical learning with a case based approach followed by a term paper at the end of the course which folks have to do in some industry. The assignments and problems open up the brain to innumerable vistas and avenues of learning, and being in a class of around 80% experienced junta has another advantage. Workex of people vary from manufacuring to finance, IT, operations, sales. It gives me immense delight to see that the current batch has people from very diverse backgrounds, and so the learning is wide.

At the end of the day, when classes end, for a moment we feel "ok, lets move on to another set of activities" and yeah they are abound, be it extra curricular, or learning based or organizing events/seminars/guest lectures, the mind can't sleep at all The seniors are very supportive and the committee action has started in full flow. The batch is full of enthu, be it about the recent teachers' day celebration or heading up for summers. Minors system of examination make sure that we read our books once a month And yeah, the list of activities is garagantuan (I would wait for my batchees to fill in the spaces i have left vacant)

Thats a miniscule snapshot of life @ DMS, I know my batch mates would soon fill up the thread with anything and everything that the life here is about
I am cofused as to where should I deposit the fees between IIT-D and IMT-G.
I know comparison of reputed b-schools is not allowed here.
But to make my decisions easier I would like to know are bikes allowed in IIT-D ?
