Ok. Its time to get back in action. After a series of rather painful exams, here's an update from the Industrial Interaction Committee at Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi.
The Budgetary Rostrum 2007 was successfully held on 17th March. Here is the Post event report: BUDGETARY ROSTRUM March 17, 2007 IMPACT OF BUDGET 2007 ON CORPORATE INDIA The fundamentals are right and economy is booming. India inc. is making big strides both within the country and globally. It was no surprise that with run up to budget 2007 was marked with unusual expectations. However, it has turned out to be a rather timid one. Rather than leveraging on the buoyant economy, the finance minister delivered a budget that failed to create enthusiasm. On the other hand, this Budget has gone a long way in focusing on sectors that have long been neglected but are critical if India is to achieve its aim of 10 % growth in coming years. Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi took up this critical issue and organized the 1st rostrum of the year in its series on the 17th March 2007. The topic for the Budgetary Rostrum was ‘Impact of budget 07 on Corporate India’. During the seminar, eminent speakers from the industry addressed issues related to the budget and its impact on various dimensions of corporate INDIA. Inaugurating the event Prof Harish Chaudhary, DMS IITD discussed the budget in context of common man. Mr. S.N. Mukherjee, Executive Head (Finance), Siemens gave a review of last 3 budgets and implications of the current one on Telecom sector. He talked about the wish list of the sector from budget and its increasing role in economy. Speaking at the seminar Mr. Hemendra Mathur, Associate Director, Yes Bank eloquently explained various taxes that are introduced in the budget and its overall impact. He explained about the inverse relationship between maturity of an economy and the criticality of the budget. Going into minor details, Mr. Vijay Gupta of Deloitte commented about the sectoral significance of budget. He gave details of FBT, MAT etc. Mr. Prashant Nair of NDTV gave an insight into the impact as positive, neutral or negative. He mentioned sectors ranging from Tobacco, IT to housing and Agriculture. While speaking about expectations of foreign companies from Budget and problems they face in India, Mr. Rajiv Anand, Associate Director, PWC gave examples from his own experience. Mr.SC Aggarwal, VP (Global Tech.), Ranbaxy gave a direct tax perspective and compared Global Trends in Tax rates and how it has an overall effect on economies. Mr. TK Arun, Resident Editor of Economic Times, New Delhi emphasized on progress of economy as a whole rather than in parts. Budget should reduce the disparities rather than focusing on sectors that are in vogue but effect only a minority. Mr. Anshu Gupta of NGO Goonj touched a chord when he said” Delivery mechanism is as important as allocation’. We should understand ground realities and ensure the benefit of budgets and its impact reaches everyone. Perhaps the event can be best summarized in Prof. Harish Chaudhary’s words “Implementation is as important a part as formulating the budget and someone has to take the responsibility” http://www.iitdmba.com | | | | | | | |

The following article, which got published in a famous magazine, is written by a 1st year MBA student at DMS, IIT Delhi Destination Management – Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi B-School Application and Admission procedure is like taking auditions to screen the hero for the movie called life. The script is the same everywhere, give or take some sectoral schools; the candidates are the institutes’ one applies to. The producer of course is dad who pays for all the applications and the director --- You! You are the one who gets to call the shots at the end of the day. You are the crucial decision maker. You can take no wrong decision for one wrong step taken, and one life ruined! I don’t say you get ruined for life, but it will be incomplete. A good Manager needs a good B-School for a complete experience called life! So, before you decide where you want to go, make a proper decision, a well-judged, highly informed decision! To help you further by giving insights into DMS, IIT-D, here I am… The Department of Management Studies at IIT-Delhi is a result of the revolutionary process of growth of an idea floated in 1963. What was then a seed gradually came to life in 1974. IIT Delhi set up an internal committee to scrutinize the functioning of the Management Area of the Institute. Years later, DMS was brought into existence in 1993 and the two year full time and three year part time MBA programmes commenced in 1997. In 2002, an addition course of MBA with focus on Telecommunication Systems Management was added under the aegis of Bharti School of Telecom Technology and Management. The department had its first batch Full Time MBA programme in 1997 and since then has always been growing bigger and better. The backbone of the institute is its highly experienced faculty and it doesn’t need mention that IIT is synonymous with efficient infrastructure and state-of-the art facilities. The institute believes in making Managers for tomorrow, it is highly focused on creating individuals competent enough to take on changing business environment and highly dynamic customer needs and if the satisfaction of the previous employers’ is anything to go by, DMS has done a good job. It is one of the very few B-Schools in the country that can boast of creating holistic managers. Students here are not the regular mugging-in-the-class MBA types. There is no dearth of classes and assignments I agree but this is one of the very few institutes that offer a lot of activities for the students to learn. There is a fortnightly seminar series called Rostrum, conceptualized and organized entirely by students. The annual Management festival Parivartan bring best business brains from B-Schools across the country and puts them on through creative games, paper presentations and at the end of the day, also lets them chill their heals out. The institute works in close liaison with GIFT (Global Institute for Flexibility Management) society, which organizes competitions and workshops worldwide on Flexibility in Business Environments. The Department also comes up with an annual Student Magazine on Management, Chaos. And to chill out amidst all this high-funda Management games and mags, DMS has D-Mag, the fundoo campus magazine. The Rostrum series keeps the Department in constant touch with the corporate world. Every rostrum is dedicated to one specialization and a topic earmarked for each of them. The last held rostrum was on March 17th, 2006 which was mroe generic and revolved around Impact of Budget on Corporate India. All the rostrums thus held culminate into a mega event, a two day National Seminar on ‘Building India Inc.’ where the students have their close encounters with the top managements of various firms. And the best part is that the story is not yet over. Apart from all this stuff, the Department witnesses frequent quizzes-both general and business-and is always abuzz with abundant activity of its marketing club 5th P, HR Club Resource DiMensionS, Finance Club Fanatics, Strategy Club Strategica, Operations Club Op Centre, IT Club i-Prabhat. So much for the student activities. The professors are involved in various research and consultancy activities and have been instrumental in conceiving and conducting various Management and Entrepreneurial Development Programmes of which industries like ONGC, BHEL, Shriram Group, JK Organization, Birla Group of Companies have been beneficiaries. The department has also contributed at the policy making level at the highest level of the government, UG Commission, AICTE, Ministry of HRD and various other corporate enterprises. Now, winding up the introduction to the institute lands me at the most awaited topic: Placements. DMS has been having great placements year after year with the name and fame of its alumni reaching every nook and corner of the corporate world. Its raining offers at The Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi, with some of the biggest names in the corporate world making a beeline for some of the best managerial talent available in the country. Placements 2007 have reinforced DMS’ position among the higher echelons of management education. With companies competing for the best brains from this centre of excellence, the entire batch was placed within six hours of commencement of the placement process. Even before the placement process began an impressive 18 PPOs were made. The average salary for the year was a whopping Rs.8.57 Lakh p.a., whereas the median salary stood at Rs. 8.12 Lakh p.a., and the highest domestic salary offered was Rs. 13.5 Lakh p.a. A total of 42 companies visited the campus scouting for talent and in the process made a staggering 1.92 offers per student, including overseas assignments. The profiles offered this year saw a remarkable departure from the previous years, and companies offered a wide range spanning Finance, Consulting, Marketing and IT. With some of the most respected names in the Banking and Financial Services Industry such as HSBC, Kotak Mahindra, Citibank, SBI Caps, SEBI, and ICICI to name a few, handpicking talented managers, DMS has surely come of age as a premier Business School. Some of the other star recruiters includes KPMG, IBM (BCS), Avalon, Market RX from the consulting domain, CTS, Wipro, IBM, Kanbay, HCL, PCS from the IT/ITES sector, and Maruti, Kingfisher Airlines, Idea, Bharti, McKinsey KC, DCM Shriram offering Marketing Profiles..
