Re: ISB student offered Rs 1 cr plus salary- Official Release - 07-04-2006, 12:41 PM

[qoute=RINKU] assumptioms abt EQ level...??

ISB ISB again.......seems like lot of ISB PR people arnd.

and if you place a MS 10 yrs wrk ex for 1.04 crore in 2006...big deal.......IIM has placed a person with very less wrk ex for .99 crore in 2001....

question is not abt the salary....its abt quoting dollar salaries in rupeees......

1 crore

[/qoute]

What a weird comment to make dude... isn't every institute's placements discussed?... and work-ex or no work-ex, how many managers in India earn 1 crore rupees or dollar equivalent thereof!?

and lots of people here might want to reconsider working a few years before doing their MBA... we all have the option so why crib about salries being higher coz of work ex, like it is some unfair advantage...

"Salaries" is one quantifiable way of comparing B-Schools.. always will be... we all know its not the only thing but why suddenly get sulky about it now?

I would beg to differ with the sweeping statement that ISB is the only institution in the world that has salary figures lower than the cost of education. Difficult data points to prove that. And further, would beg to differ that ISB is a second option to people who have not got in IIM A B and C because it caters generally to different demographic population with different aspirations and needs.

Anyway, instead of jabbing at the IIMs or ISB or for that matter any other college in India for way they present the salary figures. I would make an effort present what is the ideal practice across bschools abroad. I have attached the last year's Employment report of Univ. of Virginia - Darden Business School here.

Interesting points is that a) They have only quoted base salaries i.e. exclusive of bonus and other benefits b) The highest base salary of USD $200,000 is to an individual with 1 - 3 years of work ex, ie. the general notion that higher work-ex gets a higher salary is incorrect i guess.

Hopefully, the placement committee members can take cue from the report and present a similar report to reduce the debates post the release of placement figures. Ofcourse, this is not the best way to present coz there is nothing best in this world only leading and maybe we can have a constructive discussion on how we can improve the employment reports and this information can be passed on to the respective student members of placement committee.

Cheers

Saptarshi

I don't understand why there is unnecessary reaction against the 1 crore. ISB is an exceptionally good school which is trying to get good Indian students and build a good alumni base. Now to get good students you need to market your school. To market your school you need to speak the language your target audience understands. The target audience in this case has been bred on a diet of highest/median/average salaries fed of course from the IIMs who have been doing it for a decade now almost. So ISB has to quote a one crore salary to make sure the students understand its growth. And DG you are factually incorrect in that "average salary lower than fees" funda. Take a look at INSEAD or LSB for that matter. ISB is the way forward and I hope they expand across India and the world.

Well I have no problem whatsoever with ISB marketing their institute. No doubt they are really good too and so are the students who study there. But my main bone of contention is the quoting of dollar figures converted into rupees. That's just plain wrong no matter who has been doing it since when.

Spot on! My views too...ISB is just speaking the language "prospective candidates" will understand. I see nothing wrong in the mantra
If you have it flaunt it...especially when it comes to salaries. Money is a language the whole world understands irrespective of the caste, creed ,culture and the other c's

Re: ISB student offered Rs 1 cr plus salary- Official Release - 07-04-2006, 02:31 PM

Just to further my point. Imagine what kind of a reaction ISB would have generated if it had come out with "Placements 2006 were very successful. All our students were placed with great profiles.
And Abhishek the "1 crore" figure is largely psychological. It's like the Sensex crossing 10000. No one gave a rat's ass when it crossed 9871. So crossing that 1 crore barrier is again great way of showing us how ISB is in a wholly different league (which may/may not be true). I am not sure as to who perpetrated this dollar conversion-the media or ISB itself but it is of course is ridiculous. All said and done remember the first rule for new kids on the block "Pick out the biggest, baddest, meanest guy on the street and hit him as hard as you can". Expensive suits and luxury cars really do not change the rules much

Ah! This is not the 1st time a BSchool is doing that. The IIMs have done it before. But now of course the $193K looks more catchy!

Anyway, from next year, the IIMs at Bangalore and Ahmedabad will not reveal the highest offers. One reason is the extortion demand the family of a graduate received

Re: ISB student offered Rs 1 cr plus salary- Official Release - 08-04-2006, 10:20 AM

I don't think there is anything wrong absolutely on part of ISB, even if it was a deliberate attempt to excite prospective guys!

It makes every sense for an institute that really wants people with big work-ex in the range of 3-8 years (or even more like 10-12) who as individuals share one or more of the following (put urself in such "model aspirant" shoes and look at it from ISB's viewpoint and u will know why)
1) Quite aloof themselves (as compared to the prospective "student" community which is in the thick of the things),
2) Drawing salaries way above the best of avgs. available elsewhere,
3) Given to believe that a 15 lac fees is very prohibitive for them,
4) Dont really "believe" that it IS possible to shift careers and gears in the same go

As far as the argument of showing/not highlighting the "1 crore" thingy, I dont see a reason why it could have been avoided as long as it is true!! Practically, when we can talk of everything else (phoren posting or phoren job) in terms of the salary converted in Rs., then why not this? IMHO, such 'events' can help in some way to build visibility for Indian B schools - outside India as well!
