hi rambo,haripi,vijaya, and all seniors.

I should say, that the kind of excitement that i see among ur'll towards the institute is unmatched. At Great Lakes i find the spirit among the students to be very very high. And be assured that the coming batch i mean our batch is equally excited.

I am sure that great lakes is soon to emerge as a leading B-School in India.

we all are wiaiting for the GYAN from ur'll and 19th April very anxiously.

hey fastn steady
Well they didnt share a lot of details on the change of location, but it is definitelyy on the agenda as the biggest room in the present location can seat 130 students.
Also i believe everybody stays in the vicinity of GLIM, so we can probably get in touch with our seniors to take us thru this.

Just a few quick thoughts. I am sure you are all hopeful and positive about a great placement season at Great lakes ( please don't call it glim/glims). Thats part of the branding exercise!
Ya getting back to placement news- we have had 3 days of placement activities with more than half the batch placed. Around 50 people await their turn, which will happen sometime next month. We have zeroed in on certain dates and hopefully the wait wont be long. People with a variety of experience and specialized requirements constitute this list. We are in constant touch with each student to make sure everyone gets what he/she wants. Also many of those who got placed have had multiple offers, which is again great news as the industry is excited about this school and what it has to offer. I am able to share all this in the capacity of a placecom member.

For those who have made it to Great Lakes, its an excellent opportunity for all of you to practise all management lessons during your stint as a PG student here. You will be heading some committee and take decisions on issues from admission process to placements to branding and PR. As Uncle Bala often says, its " your school and you take care of it". If you want something, you get it done. Resources will be made available but initiative will be ours. I am really glad that you are all going to be a part of this fabulous experience. Ok ok... i don't want to sound prophetic .... ! Great Lakes rocks nevertheless
I suggest non-finance people to read up some basic stuff if possible. More gyan some other time...

Hi Rambo,

thanks a lot for all your gyan....it certainly helps all of us in 06-07 batch to know something abt glim before we actually reach there...can you pls advise some reading
material for non finance people like me...it will certainly help...

ciao..

Hi Rambo,
Thanks a ton for your reply.
However I have couple of queries
1) I dont think the new building is available for us, this year and hence the residential campus is ruled out. Isnt it?
2) If the above point fails, then how is the accomodation scenario over there. Were we able to find nice accomodation near the college? THis is important since, we will save a lot of time commuting, cost cutting also will be there and most importantly, since Wi-Fi is only enabled in campus , we can utilise most of the time in college. If not anyways , we need to go for broad band connection. Please throw somelight on this one.

Regards
Sachin

Re: Great Lakes Institute of Management - 2006-07 Batch - 25-01-2006, 09:45 AM

Hi guys.

I was thinking of this change of location for our batch and came across a few points worth pondering over. lets discuss them.

P1) If a permanent campus is soon to come ( in a year or two ) then why this additional expenditure in shifting temporarily to a new location as we all know that we have limited resources.

Its not that i don't want to go to bigger/better campus, but its just that I am more worried of the long term returns.

P2) If Great Lakes doesn't come up with a new campus very soon, then how long will it continue enjoying the Big Big names in the Advisory council. and how long will it have the Name of Yale attached to it. and most importantly how long will it be able to attract Quality students.

I am sure Uncle Bala and all the authorities in Great Lakes are working very hard on this and must have alredy worked this out. but this shifting to a new campus temporarily made me think these. Can somebosy throw more light on these.

It would be best if our seniors talk to us abt these.

Regards
pradeep

P.S. I have very high regards for Great Lakes. and beleive that in days to come it will be a leading B-School in India.

well..well..well.....

pradeep...i guess that the present campus is much too small and looking at the response
from business world as well as MBA aspirants they want to atleast better the facility since the permanant campus will be ready only by an year or two..and believe me this is not a very short time , i think that they must be facing difficulty in the present campus with the current batch and hence this decision..

i think uncle bala and all the authorities must be appreciated for their effort...although i feel that the permanent campus should come sooner the better.....

seniors pls comment....

hi guyz,

a lotta activities in this thread..nice to see that..

coming to your queries..

why another temporary campus when u can shift to a permanent one in 1-2 years?

firstly the college has been gaining significant ground both in terms of industry recognition as well as the quality of students apping to it. to keep up with this pace we need more space and the current one's utility is around 100% and considering that we may have lot of new permanent faculty in future we need a bigger one.. but all said and done the plan is still tentative and u may / may not shift to teh new temporary campus. i think there should be no room of concern over this issue as it does not affect u people in any way apart from finding accomodation..

now abt uncle bala?

guyz,
lemme tell you here is a person who is giving his heart, blood and soul towards this college and the least we can do for him is to trust him completely and that is what the last two batches have been doing and thats what i believe even you juniors would be doing. there are still some minor issues regarding the laand which needs to be sorted out and believe me the 4th batch will defly study in the permanent campus. its just a matter of time before we are on to our path of greatness and it requires the trust, belief and efforts of all great lakers to achieve that.

now coming to accomodation??
in case u guyz still are holed up in the current campus..chill and have no frills abt it guyz.. there are houses nearby which can house upto 60-70 guyz.. we will do all that is humanly possible to ensure that u guyz have it easy once u reach chennai.. in case u guyz shift to the new campus, even then we will try to do our max but only thing being we will have to start lookingout for agents and peepz like that..

I can see a lot of infectious enthusiasm in all u gyz abt what to study to be prepared..great going guyz..

from my personal point..i would suggest you peopel to do basics of financial accounting and bits of economics. though its really not necessary if u guyz wanna have a initial edge this is what u people need to do.

ciao,
Prashanth

hi prashanth.

Thanks a lot for the detailed posts, and relieving me from the confusions that i had.

I agree with you when u say that uncle Bala is putting his heart, blood and soul towards this college, and the fruits can already be seen. i must say that even in 1.5 yrs time Great Lakes has come a long way.
I am sure i will know him better once i reach there.

Regarding economics/finance.

Can u please tell us any books/online matterial that we can refer to. Being totally new to economics and finance i dont understand where to start from.
