Re: Life@IIMK - 11-07-2008, 06:02 AM

An early morning post...or a late night one...doesn't even seem to matter anymore...

Had 3 proper night-outs in a row this week(a proper night out in counter strike terminology means that you went on with the next day classes without any sleep whatsoever)...something which I hadn't ever managed even during my gaming days...

by the 3rd day I was as physically exhausted as Virender Sehwag is when he has to run all the way to the boundary to field a ball

Roobaroo ended with a dismal showing for section C...some amazingly talented people here in all fields who make someone like me feel as if he has done nothing in his life except sleep, eat & watch tv...
(my debut dance performance on "pappu cant dance" was a hit though...girls, PM me if you're interested in the video )

Inter section sports "clash of titans" began from monday...the 1st day we had football...& our section took out all the pent up frustation of losing roobaroo by thrashing section D 4-1(with yours truly scoring 1 goal )

My next event is TT on monday...so many good players here that we have to hold a team selection process within sections too
everyday the buzz is about one or the other national level player cropping up in some section...

Add to this the loads of assignments, tasks, presentations & what not...which I dont even feel like talking about...ask Harshad or nitin though...they're already getting dark circles around their eyes

One mention on studies though...we have a subject called Social Transformation of India(STI)...taken by Prof. A F Mathew...he is visiting faculty from MICA.
Now...this one has taken our year by storm...radically different...it has made people think long & hard about social issues around...& professor Mathews is just wow

Time to go prepare for the micro-economics quiz now

Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy...

mich on orkut

Hi,

My first post on this thread .

Would like to start by asking Jok3r about the micro eco quiz . We are in same section as well as in same group for a few courses. Anyways quiz was a disaster (slightly more for Jok3r if what he has been saying around is true) ....

Anyways life has picked up speed over past two weeks. I am perennially striving to meet some deadline or others. Till now quiz weren't on prof's agenda but now the wheel has been set into motion. With barrage of case studies, reports, presentations etc life has become really hectic. Sleep has already become a scarce luxury. Well...Welcome to IIM-K

The most beautiful part is that we are still being told that right now its our honeymoon period which is approaching its end soon ....

Anyways ... Tab ki Tab Dekhenge

Been there, Done That... Don't Remember

Re: Life@IIMK - 12-07-2008, 10:51 PM

My first post in this thread. Have been browsing Pagalguy for the past 3 years but didn’t post much. I will try to post a lot from now on. Even if I think not to post, this Kampus will make me write something.
Awesome Kampus....
Three weeks passed by but I have a feeling that I came to college only 3 days back. Took the train from Chennai and got down at Calicut station the next day morning. You have someone to welcome you at the station.

WELCOME TO K
The Students Council has arranged for a bus from station to the Kampus. Everyone was in a sleepy mood for half an hour of bus journey and suddenly a spark in everyone's face. A one kilometre journey up the hill and then you find the majestic towers with full of greenery. The hostel rooms have been already allocated, and I can’t forget that day bcos in these three weeks, that is the only day I was roaming without any work.
There was registration on the first day and then one day of orientation. Classes started and everyone was very attentive in the class which generally happens for the first few days. Then there was one week of ice breaking going on. Many call it ragging but I will never say it as ragging. The first week gave an insight of how a b-school atmosphere is. The senior batch also took some pain to give us case studies, listening to some pathetic presentations given by us and spending there time. The week ended with the Hostel party on Saturday night. I have not been in hostel before, but this party was more enjoyable. The party went on till the next day morning.
The start of the second week. Regular classes till Wednesday. Then came "Roobaroo", the cultural festival between sections. Quiz, Dumb-c, dance, songs - everything was there from Thursday to Saturday. Again it’s Saturday, and so you have the party. This time its the Mess Party. There was continuous music from 11 PM till 5 AM and you had people dancing from start till the end.
Tats where the Tag line goes in K - “Work Hard, Party Harder".
The committee's and the Interest groups were introduced during that week. I was wondering how students manage to have so many activities.

Now something about this week. I thought that there will be rigorous studies and no place for entertainment but I was wrong again. The next event started in Kampus - "Clash Of titans", which is nothing but the sports meet between sections. With all these activities, we all came to know each other better. This event continues till next week. So wait for more updates.

I forgot to mention about the seniors. They are absolutely fantastic. You ask something silly to them and still they answer. It’s the culture of "K". So we can assume that apart from other specializations, everyone coming out of K has some expertise in "Hospitality Management" too.

I am not very good at writing. But as I mentioned earlier, this Kampus made me write...
More to Come..... [If you ppl don’t mind in me writing]

Cheers

Re: Life@IIMK - 15-07-2008, 02:36 PM

Hello !

Week 3 drew to a close with another rash of quizzes, assignments and case studies.

Spent most of my birthday studying the only subject we have been studying for 3 weeks.... Stats.

One advantage of those stats assignments is that it keeps us up till the wee hours.... and that's when suddenly the campus fills up with clouds which move in from the valley. They are everywhere, in the amphi, moving through the corridors, in the canteen, and making a beeline to enter my room when I open the balcony door before sleeping. As stunning as the campus is during the day, at this time of the night, it gets a dreamy look, as the clouds make the lights blur...

Half-way through the first half of Sem 1 and it already feels like forever here. 2 weeks to go for the mid-sems and there are a couple of subjects which make absolutely no sense to me

As jok3r said, Social Transformation lectures are incredible. Nobody missed them in spite of the weird timings.... late in the evening and no attendance.

Trying desperately to finish off my blog for the last few weeks.... every time I manage to cover a week, another has passed by

Seeing so much interesting insect life in campus and I have no time to photograph them.... damn frustrating

All seniors roll their eyes when they see us studying.... and we keep thinking we are not doing half of what we should be doing...

And in spite of all the cribbing I do, life rocks

Cheers,
Harshad

Re: Life@IIMK - 15-07-2008, 04:15 PM

Man... what do I say?? My Komrades write awesome stuff... Anyways, I am trying to Kompete here too...

Entering IIMK...

Waiting I was.... Waiting for the train that was to take me to the place where I would spend the next two years (hopefully it wouldn't be more than that... Not because I don't like the place... I would love to spend my entire life here... But I would not want to be in the class of my juniors while my batchmates forge ahead) The train was late because there had been some problem on the Mulund station (The speakers were blaring that there had been some public unrest)

Anyhow, the train turned up finally... 1 hours and 10 minutes late... Which had passed quite nicely since one of my future batchmate's uncle had come over there to meet him and he was also stranded because the train was late... I was continuously reminded how important the IIM tag will be for me in the future (Well, it certainly is at present)... We had some nice chitchat with another family who was waiting for the train too... And the daughter asked me whether she should try for an IIT... Your opinions become so important when you are going into an IIM...

As the train came, I rushed forward to my bogie... More so because I had a lot of stuff with me... (7 bags I guess... I was going for 2 years after all)... And as I reached my seat, I found two of my batchmates, one of whom I had already met in an IIMK party (Yeah, the induction starts much before college ) Those poor fellas helped me organize my stuff, since there was no way all our luggage could have been accomodated in that small 3AC compartment.

The next 24 hours I will remember for my entire life... It was quite natural.. There were 13-14 of us (In fact, there were more than 20 but we could not find all of them) and the beautiful ride of Konkan railways... It is amazing... People say that many labourers died while that track was being prepared... I salute each one of them who worked in such hardships to create a thing of beauty...

What happened in the train is a part of internal gossip of IIMK, so I would move over to when we reached our destination-Kozhikode. Beware of Coolies on Kozhikode station.. They would not wait for you. They take it for granted that they have to take away the luggage and it is with your approval.. And you can't convince them otherwise...

Anyhow, we had a big group with lots of luggage.. So it was a daunting task.... However, the coolies managed to take the entire luggage to the bus somehow (The Bus?? Which bus?? Yeah, everything is planned here... The bus from Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode was waiting for us.. And along had come a senior to guide us regarding the process... Managers?? We have it in our blood) There was so much luggage that half the bus was filled with it...

The ride to IIMK was even more exhilarating (More so because of the driver-in fact, it is really difficult driving in Kozhikode: Not only the roads, but the drivers also are amazingly skillful… Read: In a negative sense) The city is a wonder though...

Entering IIMK: Our seniors had sent us a video about life@IIMK. So it is not that we had not seen the institute. However, as we entered the institute, all of us were struck by the beauty of the institute. I may not be a traveller, but I have been to many places... As well as many IIMs... There cannot be a more beautiful institute than this one. People say it's a resort, a hill station and what not. If I had already seen so many photos and videos and could not have imagined how beautiful the institute can be, then what would have been the condition of those who had not even seen the photos... They were simply awestruck... The place is heaven on earth. Maybe after entering the institute, I came to realize why Kerala is called GOD's own Kountry... And why the institute is called GOD's own Kampus... Ohh... The K-bug has bitten me ever since I entered the Kampus... ;0)

The process of getting to our rooms was so smooth that by the afternoon, we had already arranged everything and were exploring the institute.. Some of them went to play football down the hill... Some went to the MF (margin-free shop)... If you ask even a finance guy from K what MF is, the first thing that will come to his mind is the "Margin-Free" shop..

The architecture of the college is simply amazing. The rooms are fantastic, especially the valley-view ones… And the camaraderie at the institute is legendary.

Now what happened on that first day? Of course, we made ourselves comfortable in our rooms.. We explored the campus… But most of all, everybody was trying to converse and get introduced to everybody… In fact, even now, I might not remember the names of the people, but I would certainly remember that this was the person who met me on the first day and we played table tennis…

The institute is so well connected that despite the heavy rains here, I haven't ever felt the need for an umbrella... All the pathways are covered... (Except probably the hostels which have been newly made and which will be incorporated in the structure soon... I live in one of them and still I haven't felt the need) The academic area at the top, the mess nearby, the NC (Night Canteen), our beloved C hostel (yeah... the girls one) and the cluster of boys hostel, the Harvard steps on the entrance of the academic area, the amphitheatre, the Auditorium, the lush green gardens (where we can't walk Maintaining the beauty of the institute)... The clouds that you see beneath you when you get up in the morning... The rains here produce a sensational sight... Even a normal person becomes a poet... And when you are used to writing poems, what else would you do?

THE FIRST RAIN

A gale of mist touches my skin,
Dancing with the clouds, my hair grows thin;
My spirit is dancing with those of Gods,
And flowers being poured by trunks carrying logs.

Like first love which eliminates all needs,
Like how a mother seeing her first-born feels,
Like that first kiss disseminating her fragrances,
Such a heady feeling, those lovely trances.

I am happy today; I feel blood in my veins.
Mother Nature sends omens through thunderous rains;
My soul seems connected with the Milky Way,
May these cosmic drops encompass me every day.

P.S. This stuff has been written in class. Please do not tell our professors.

In fact, the course co-ordinator (CoCo as I have begun to be called by most now) for the class we all love to hate: Statistics where our dear Sir us with assignments believing that the name IIM means "Do the IIMpossible"...

I wonder whether we would have been posting here had we got even 1 more teacher like that

Re: Life@IIMK - 17-07-2008, 11:47 AM

Finally we get a day with only a single period... Doesn't really matter though, since we have so much of "committee work" going on.... It seems to me that the seniors have hatched a conspiracy that we people should not beat them on grades and so are giving us so much work that we screw up our mid-terms...

But then, we are gonna be managers after all, aren't we??

Bring 'em on...

I wonder sometimes though that the increase in the number of seats at Kampus in the past few years has been due to the number of committees. Maybe somewhere around 2003, the situation might have been that the number of committees might have outnumbered the number of students... So maybe, management decided that at least to put one member in one committee, we need more students... And hence, grew even more the fastest growing institute in India. Seriously, the sheer amount of activity happening here confounds you. And that too a person like me, who has done only organizing work and nothing else during graduation. There is something for everyone here. Sports, music, dance, management, interest groups, clubs, leadership series, well don't ask more... I will fill the entire page.

Sorry for my long hiatus from the forum, my password was changed and coz of my laziness never tried to get the new one .
Coming back to life@K …. We were told that second year is pretty chill when compared with first year to an extent it is true but the saddest thing is that we rarely have holidays (we have classes almost on all weekendsL). Met most of the puys from the first year but rarely talk to them not that I am busy but they are (atleast their perception). The enthu of the new batch is pretty high and they are actively getting involved in all the activities on campus. We have very good sports teams this time around and am sure we are gonna beat the hell out of B in sangram and reverse the score line. The inter hostel cultural event Konnect is gonna start on Saturday where juniors and seniors come together to fight for their hostel. Have to watch a movie now, so signing off
P.S. Will have a PG meet on Kampus soon , watch this space for more updates
