Re: My initial experience at my B School - 06-06-2003, 06:09 PM

heya ppl.....

anirban.....first off the block.... nice to c that mate......u've probably put in most of the stuff that i was intending to......guess these ppl follow the intel practise of setting up semi-conductor fabs.... anyways...yea...so far, the general mood here is that we are just round the corner when we folks here are gonna be submerged under a huge wave of coursework n assignments......been having the preparatory classes in accounting for the last few days and so far, its been quite a mixed response from my side to the subject, i guess.... lemme follow up and add on or remove the relevant portions from anirban's post.... he's reduced a lot of my keystrokes...

Quote:
Day 1: June 2

There was to be a welcome party and registration for Term 1. Arrived at IBS at 9.30 sharp to find hoards of anxious looking students and parents (yes, they were also invited) waiting for the show to begin. After the registration, the HR Manager of BOC India and the Asst Vice president of ABN AMRO Bank, 2 leading recruiters of IBS Kolkata stated what they expected from a prospective employee. The Dean then introduced the faculty members, who adviced us on how to go about the course. The meeting was followed by refreshments. And oh, yes, we were given the Term 1 Study Mats, Huge fat book, all total 16 in number.

Our regular MBA instructions begin on 10th June,Pre-midterm exams begin on July 14 . Dont know how we can manage, as the syllabus is real huge.
yep..registration it was here too.....but restricted to just that.....the second years are all away on their summer internship project ( for those that don't know, all icfai b-schools have 16 weeks of industry-related projects in each year of the course )....so no ragging too.... ....but at the same time, no freshers party to date, as well...although we were told by the dean that we could expect one in a decent place once those folks are back around august......on registration day, lunch was also provided....me pushed back as already i was beginning to strain my frail structure with the weight of the 20 odd course books that those folks had given me.... :( .... and no, none from industry was there that day....we were told that a coupla tata group companies' top honchos will be addressing us at taj on 30th.......and no addressing of freshers too.....the batch strength is around 250 for the general mba course ( nee PGDBA) and around 60 for the mba-hrm.....the other branches are at the banjara hills campus....thats a km down the road from this campus... not sure of the intake there......

syllabus sure sounds a lot....what with the pre-midterms at a very early date.....anyways....guess that adds to the excitement too.....a lotta guys here are already quite kicked up abt the upcoming tests n other stuff...and i am told, a lotta extra-curriculr events keep happening here on a very regular basis....

Day 2 June 3:

this day was our scheduled induction session....we were addressed by the dean, the associate dean and then the faculty ( around 40 in all...a lot, i thought) .....quite a few members of the faculty have a lotta xp and sounded quite well in their brief intros.......and whats more...a lot sounded a lot amiable than what one would expect from senior profs....like anirban pointed out, all profs seriously are trying to get the message across that they are very accessible to students..and from my xp so far ,they are......the non-engineers had their math classes in the afternoon....me was free.... couldn't really force myself into those classes, although it was an open session for all....math wasn't and still ain't something that i'd like to c myself doing...

we folks here had our english language test on 5th....it wasn't any surprise kinda thing coz it was already put up on the notice board on the first day itself....but the second part, we guys are yet to undergo....so its gonna be a presentation...hmm...thanks anirban for the heads-up.... ...

canteen here.....the food...haven't tasted the complete menucard as yet....but from what i've seen, it was quite good....and reasonable as well....but the best part abt it was its location.....u have a cool breeze always blowing around due to its location (indoors).... yet to check out the comp lab and library..... we folks yet to get our id cards for that.... but sure am lookin forward to seeing the kinda machines that i'd have at my disposal there....

but one thing folks....truth be said.....the xp that i've had in the last few days or so belies a lot that we'd talked of in the past...the profs are quite knowledgeable..... the senior management of the school sound real passionate abt where they would like to c the school in terms of market acceptability....... and beyond that, i guess its each unto his own..... let's c how it progresses......

the schedule sure sounds hectic....but i guess, thats what i'd luv after going thro' quite a lackluster period......and the quality of the courseware, from what i've seen so far, has been quite good.... the crowd...well...to be frank...i haven't interacted with many so far....mostly due to the maddening heat down here....ppl just rushing back to get to their rooms once the classes are done...probably will be meeting up once regular classes commence from 9th....... and yea....like anirban said, its a 9-5 routine.....with other stuff said to be taking up atleast a coupla hours after college daily.....

n guys....i know a lotta ppl on the forum are gonna love this part...the other day i was jus introducing myself to another chap here...and in comes another chap, who asks me if it was indeed me who was subbu.....he's been asking a lot of localites abt me, it seems....and he is from the forums !!!... the guy that goes by the id of ruskin....and a couplof his other friends also related the forums.....so PG's sure going places, i guess....would luv to hear something on these lines from the other folks going to other b-schools.....

folks.....do come back with ur xp and ur initial assessment.....guess each one's interested in knowing abt other institutes too.....next on line are the X-men i guess.... btw, what of symbi folks....shubham n ankita....we are waiting to hear from you........cya folks.....

Cheers

a few more additions ppl.....the comp lab here has around 120 systems....actually this part was a bone of contention during our induction session, when a student wanted to know from the dean why the number of PCs is much lower than the strength of the batch (around 300) .....would sure like to know what the figure is around for other b-schools.... and CFA ain't mandatory it seems, it has now been clarified......but quite a few guys here have signed up for CFA....and a lot more for the stipendary pgm.....!! ...

note to pg: boy...u should have seen the n/w security around here....ppl will definitely start to forget that they needed packet sniffers to find open systems..... ......but poor me, hardly had i logged on, my pc there crashed and my profile on the n/w corrupted :( ....
and today, when, during an intro session i just invited ppl that swear by /. , 1900, phrack n the like , to join forces, i was greeted by a deafening silence :!: :!: then had to explain some of what that was :( ...had expected a better respo.......

anyways...guys this thread has been making very interesting reading....do continue it.....

Cheers

Cheers

PS: as much as i hate doing this, i have to lock my own thread :(
