ICFAI - Kolkata - My initial experience at my B School - 05-06-2003, 08:27 PM

Hi friends,

Started my journey through the MBA course at ICFAI Business School Kolkata last Monday. My initial feeling as of now is that I am already dumbstruck by the amount of work thrust on us. Have already been through one English language test, one impromptu presentation and several preparatory (revision) classes on Maths & Accounts.
Ok, I'll try to write it one by one chronologically.

Day 1: June 2

There was to be a welcome party and registration for Term 1. Arrived at IBS at 9.30 sharp to find hoards of anxious looking students and parents (yes, they were also invited) waiting for the show to begin. After the registration, the HR Manager of BOC India and the Asst Vice president of ABN AMRO Bank, 2 leading recruiters of IBS Kolkata stated what they expected from a prospective employee. The Dean then introduced the faculty members, who adviced us on how to go about the course. The meeting was followed by refreshments. And oh, yes, we were given the Term 1 Study Mats, huge fat books, all total 16 in number.

Our regular MBA instructions begin on 10th June,Pre-midterm exams begin on July 14. Dont know how we can manage, as the syllabus is real huge. :(

Day 2: June 3

We joined the week long preparatory classes from today. The maths class started at 9.30 ( as well as the Accounts class, which I was not allowed to attend, as it was only for non-commerce students ) . At 11.45 the ragging began. It was a pretty decent ragging, and I was asked to propose to 2 girls simultaneously, and take them out on a movie. Not much problem at all

A surprise English Language written test began as soon as the ragging ended. This continued till evening, which meant that we had to forget about lunch today. The test was Part 1 of the proficiency test for soft skills, i.e based on the results, we will be put in the soft skills course. Those who fail, will have to undergo a Soft skills batch for the entire term, and the lucky ones who pass will only have to do a book review. This will mean that they will get the last period from 4.00PM-5.15PM free, and can spend the time in the canteen.

Day 3 June 4

Had part 2 of the English test in the morning. It involved a impromptu presentation to be made with a preparation time of 2 mins only. The Maths prep classes were held for 2 hours in the afternoon. Spent the rest of the time in the canteen and the computer lab playing Roadrash and Cricket 2002 ;-) I just started liking the place even more

Okay Now I want to write down some facts for posterity, which I feel will clear some confusions about IBS (Atleast its Kolkata centre) :

The batch strength this year is 116, down from 163 last year. PGDBA ( now renamed as general MBA) students : 85, MBA (Finance) 21. Other courses not available this year.
Environment is good, and you feel like studying.
Library is okay. Haven't got my card as yet. After I get it , I will check the library out, and let you know about the books available. There is A huge repository of journals.
The computer lab has about 30-35 terminals. I think some more are there, but they have been sent for a overhaul. There are 2 servers, and a 128 KBPS internet connection ( Being upgraded to 256 KBPS. work is on for that)
The canteen is very cheap, and the food is quite pallatable. Full Chicken thali is available for Rs20/-. Snacks and drinks are also moderately priced.

Will write again later . Gotta sleep now, as hardly got any last night.Subbu, write ur experiences soon. All my new classmates are very eager to hear about Hyderabad. It there really the army of students we have heard about so much ?

Chiao

Sure, Bingo. Though the professors are pulling all stops to encourage us & make us feel confy, there is no beating the fact that the time is real real short, and lot has to be done. The regular instructions for the program starts from Monday, when we will have to attend classes non stop from 9.30AM to 5.15PM (which often extends to 7.00PM, as the seniors say) with a 1/2hour lunch break thrown in between. This is scary, as then we will come back real late and work till the wee hours of the morning.

Bye Bye to something called "sleep". Boo!! Hoo!!

What say Subbu , Manu and the other ICFAIans ?

Cant wait to hear about the experiences of the others when their classes begin. Sure theirs will be a lot more interesting than my exp.

Hi Manu,

Nice to see u enjoying at IBS-B , buddy. The infra really sounds mind boggling. Its certainly better than the one at IBS-K :(

As for the specialisation, since u hate marketing, why not take finance ? There's certainly no point in getting a degree in one stream which u have no inclination for. I will not recommend HR, as it seems that only girls are getting good placements there. ( Nearly all girls in my centre are going in for HR, btw )

Or u can maintain a CGPA of 8.0 in the first term and go for a dual in finance & marketing ( as I intend to do). This will give u a taste of both the fields, and make u stand in good stead. After all, as one of our professors at IBS-K said, u cant escape selling products. Even if you go for finance, most companies will make u sell the financial instruments for the first one year.

we got only 10 books to carry home
Dont be so happy. Subbu got 20, and I got 16. So wait for 10 more books to be dropped on your head. And going by their size and weight , it will hurt. So get those pain killers ready

Re: My initial experience at my B School - 11-06-2003, 11:38 PM

The Kolkata Centre comp lab has caught a flu Some virusbhai has brought the entire network down, including the Internet router. So no netsurfing for quite some time now.... but one can play the games........cricket2002 & roadrash being the most popular among them. And nope, we havent been assigned any network password as yet....probably because of the tech snag.

Instructions for the MBA course has started this monday.....and boy, is it hectic !!!!! I was confident that since I had a rank, and got selected straightaway in the interviews, I was at good stead. But now I realise that most of the students are much much better than me in studies, and man, are they intelligent!!

The hectic pace at which the class is progressing is unbelievable. In 2 days, 147 pages of the Marketing Management book of Philip Kotler was completed ! Probability was finished too. Eco, IT classes etc are also running as if their tail is on fire ....Surely students without maths background are having sleepless nights with stats, as I am having with Kotler. I dont even have time to phone my friends !!

Nice to see the engineers struggling with Accounts

Last week we were spending most of the time gossipping in the canteen. Now we flock to the library at the slightest chance that we get :( .Its a DOG'S life . Sigh!!

Midterms will be a nightmare. Just over a month to go for that. Dont know how I'll manage. This CGPA thing is still very vague to me.

Subbu, how much did u get in the English language test ? I've got 136/170, the second highest in the Kolkata centre. Cheers to that

Marketing activities are a lot different from sales
Yes Manubhai, I know that. What I meant to say was that even if u do marketing , there's no escaping from sales. Even if u become a marketing manager, sales become a part of ur life. So since u said that u hate sales, I gave u the suggestion.

Quote:
So i shall be taking marketing as a major and finance as a minor.
Good thing that u've taken the decision so fast. If only I could decide whether or not to go for a dual in marketing as fast as u did.

BTW, is there a girl from Kolkata called Tania Ghosh in the B'lore centre ? She studied at IMS with me. If u find her, let me know her mail id, if possible. Give my regards to her.

Thanx

not having AICTE approval is a big hurdle in a long run or not? as madras high court issue a notice to ICFAI UNIVERSITY to close its study centres as private universities doesn't exist by the order of supreme court. i'm selected for hyd. campus but such things divert my mind. PLEASE HELP ME WHAT TO DO.
