SPJ Dubai Guys,

whats abt this specialisation in 'Retail'. What are the core subs like. What exactly is the focus. Can you shed some light. How different/overlapping is this from marketing/ops?

I will try to answer ur queries one by one....

1) last batch is fully placed by now and not even one student is left.

2) most of the students got placed in dubai and very few in india...placement entirely depends upon you..how u perform in this one year, how u present urself and many other aspects..and above all u have to decide where u want to get placed....may be u want to get placed in india and u get a better oppurtunity in dubai and u go abt it.

3) students are placed in their respective fields only...like in retail ppl are placed in marketing as weel as retail related jobs..infact more marketing oriented.

4) for india the salaries mentioned are CTC but in dubai u get all ur salary in hand...no tax

5) all the students are indian.......ya there are some students who had studied in US but basically all are indians......some from dubai also.

i hope it helps...................

Hi,

I am specialising in retail and will try to answer ur query.....

For initial six months the course is same for all the students...be it any specialisation....in between we do get assignment wherein we form groups of similar specialisation but on the large scale every thing is similar...

After your diwali break second semester will start and then you will learn more about your specialisation. In Dubai retail sector is growing and there are many oppurtunities not only money wise but also career and growth wise. Andabove all what you learn in this one year will be most important for your future.

Feel free to ask anything......(related to college and course)

I bet Retail is one of the best spec. to choose at SPJIMR Dubai cos the retail industry in Dubai is booming....and u could land up in great companies and enjoi working to the core.

Great to hear that SP Jain Dubai got great placements cos seriously I doubted that...Great going .

SPJ Dubai is definitely on my list of colleges if I ever think abt going for an MBA.

Agree with you completely on this. Retail is a hot industry & an industry to watch out for in India atleast in the near future. Am not sure of developed countries.
& yes, smart kids from best B schools in the US prefer working at the walmart's & Ahold's rather than Procter's or Colgate's of the world. . Afterall Walmart is more than 5 times the size of Unilever worldwide. Head of Unilever Vietnam was here at ISB campus y'day. & from his presentation, it was more than clear that manufacturers no more hold the cards.

anyways. my queries are still unanswered...

Am curiuos about the electives you guys will do. What exactly will be the focus. Coz generally in most B schools you specialise in a function not in an industry.
So, will it be like studying supply chain electives but with all focus on retail players, studying their specific HR issues, etc etc.

Moreover, are major big-box retailers already there in Dubai? What kind of roles does the retail industry offer to B Schoolers?

Would be great to hear your responses.

thanks
amit

Hi Ashish,
Retail industry has started booming in India. Biggest malls in Gurgaon, ITC choupals, Pantaloons and the imminent entry of Walmart into India will definitely spell good for the retail sector. A 2 year stint in Dubai with the leading retail giants will definitely increase your networth and you should be hot property for Indian retailers since you would have an Indian touch with an international exposure.

Hope that answers your query.
