Moreover you can also try the Melbourne School of Business. It is very good. Infact the only good MBA school in Australia. There is also AGSM but it is not as good as MBS.

TOEFL must???? -
26-05-2005, 03:24 PM
Hi funkyfuturist,
Thanks buddy.Your post was really helpful.
Hello all,
I was just going through the pre-requisites in many colleges.. They insist that the candidates whose first language is not English MUST take TOEFL prior to application. But there is not much discussion going abt TOEFL.. So can you ppl share some info on TOEFL.. like how much time we need for preparation, difficulty level etc.. Any kind of info is highly appreciated. Thanks.

TOEFL is mandatory for the candidates whose first language is not English. The minimum TOEFL score (as required by the most of the Universities, and as per my observation) is 260. So to be safe you must score anything above 270!
And the good news is that scoring good in TOEFL is not difficult.
My advice is, choose a date closer to the GMAT (if you have not yet written the GMAT) [ say 10-15 days], so that the things [like grammer] are fresh in mind. Purchase any book on TOEFL (I think I used Barrons, it had 3 cassettes) and review the test's structure (you need to be familiar to the conditions afterall)
TOEFL has 4 parts: Listening, Reading, Structure & Writing.
Last 3 are easy to tackle, because you are just out of GMAT (I conveniently assume that you have just written GMAT) but the Listening part remain. This is when the Cassettes come into play. Play them, and try to concentrate on the discussions and answer the questions in the book.
When you are confident, write the 2 tests of PowerPrep. And lo!! You are all ready for TOEFL.
PS: For more information, see the official TOEFL site: http://www.ets.org/toefl/

I beg to differ sir, and will all those who have, want or think about giving TOEFL.
TOEFL is not required in most top universities if english was the primary language of your undergrad degree. Moreover, all universities have a TOEFL waiver form wherein you can explain the reasons you think why should not be submitting the TOEFL scores... If the reason is convincing enough... the university will exempt you from submitting TOEFL scores...
The universities so far which are not rigid about TOEFL scores and follow the requirements I have mentioned above are:
Stanford
Wharton
GSB Columbia
Tuck
ISB
Yale
MIT Sloan
I am still to get a response from Kellogg
The universities insisting on a TOEFL score are:
New York University: Stern
UC Berkeley: Haas
To hell with the above two. I will not be applying in those universities. They seem to be too rigid and b ureaucratic.
After studying for over 15 years in english I don't need to prove to anyone if I can speak, read or write quality english...
Cheers!!!

I fully agree with you, funkyfuturist.
But I think Raam wanted to know about TOEFL and thats what I told him.
(Actually I forgot to the add the point mentioned by you. SORRY :smile
Personally I never wanted to write a rubbish test like TOEFL! And those rascals charge $130 for that... Amazing!
And dont send anyone to hell.. because each university has its takers! Like, I may want to goto Hass!
My advice is that one must ask the Admission Committee about the waiver thing and act according to their advice. One must not second-guess about the situations / conditions there.

PS: I think the site name should be http://www.ets.com [dont click here] instead of http://www.ets.org

How difficult is it to get a VISA or a placement if I have not given the TOEFL as the university did not require it?? I have heard some weird comments that that the VISA authorities don't lik to hear no for an answer and one will need a TOEFL score to get a VISA in most cases. So with the companies looking for b-school grads???
Cheers!!!

Me in for Fall '06 too! -
31-05-2005, 02:16 AM
I am in on Fall of '06.
My profile - Software Engineer with ~5yrs workex, a first class B.E. and a strong interest in Finance (!)
I am planning to take GMAT by mid-July with a target of 800. (With a 97th %ile on CAT04, anything less is a crime!)
I am looking at Wharton, Columbia, Chicago, Duke and Stern with Michigan, OSU, USC and UTAustin as back up.
Trimmed that list down to
Chicago GSB
Columbia
Michigan Ross
UTAustin McCombs
USC Marshall
Any comments??
