Confused MBA aspirant - 11-02-2005, 01:08 PM

Hi Everybody !!

I am new to this site. A friend of fine suggested me. I am just like a normal person facing difficulty in deciding how to achieve my goals.

A brief about my profile:
A chartered accountant (May 2003 pass out) and commerce post graduate with close to 2 years of work ex in Telecom Industry. Currently working with Bharti Televentures at their corporate office.

I hail from a business family and in the long run is required to join my family business (being the only son). But for couple of years i want to work outside my business, gain valuable experience and most importantly use this knowledge to expand my business.

Now the issue is, am i right when i plan to do an MBA ??? I personally think only CA Qualification is not sufficient if one has ambitions to reach top management of any organisation. SO i planning to take up an additional Qualification. And i have narrowed down my choice to MBA.

But i am unable to decide should i go for a year mba or the standard 2 year one. ISB offers 1 year mba. But is it really right at this point of time to think about it (jst 2 yrs of work ex) or i should look forward to giving CAT.

Another option is that i should continue to work and may be after 3-4 years plan to go for MBA.

Can any maagement guru or rather career consultant help me out of this.
Another request plz guide me how to start preparing for CAT / GMAT.

Help me guys...........................

hi there
friend all i can do is give u a suggestion if u eventually wanna get in2 your family business then take a look at the spjain family business management program its really good also i have a friend whos an allumini there n is doing really well
its like a hands-on management experience cos they tell u 2 impliment while you learn

however if you are really keen on a regular mba then my take is do it in india cos since your family business is here and as you must be knowing an mba is very case study oriented and market oriented its more practical and applicable for you to do an mba in india.
then you can go for the regular cat also try your hand at isb as thier admission process starts before cat but keep your options open and take cat too

i gave you this advice as i come from a family business and faced the same dilema

anyways best of luck
puneet

Thanks Punnet !!

I appeared for 2003 CAT, got admission for spjain Dubai campus. At that time i was facing the same dilemna whether to go dubai or not. Finally i decided to go for work ex.

I am satisfied with my growth in Service but i think in long run, person with multiple qualification will always have an edge over a person with a single qualification but with more work ex.

like to hear your views on the same.
Also if you can tell me about your decision, when u face d the same situation.

hey buddy
ive decided to go for it im certainly doing an mba this year as for spjain dubai they have super specialisations so if you eventually need to get back to your business not too useful unless your business area is the same. thats my opinion i had the opertunity to go for spjain dubai but as i eventually wanted to get back to my business i dunked that.
if you eventually wanna work then dubai is really good.
well as for another degree i think its the teaching methodology at a good b school that really prepares you for the tough situations in a business environment.
so go for it man thats my advice

best o luck
puneet

hi abc123 and puneet,

very interesting discussion going on here..............me too hail from a family business background but have been working in it after graduation ie 2004.

although what puneet says make real good sense (doing mba from an Indian b-school), i am of the view that if a person is wanting to expand the business or diversify in a different field altogether, an mba in a phoren b-school might prove to be be very useful in terms or global exposure, developing network, international partners etc...................furthermore, one can always work in a particular industry after the completion of an mba gain experience in an international environment not to mention recover the cost of the program too............so i wouldn't consider an mba in us or uk a bad choice even if one has the family business afterall to manage in the end................btw me too the only son in my family

hope we can have some views on this from others too

Re: Confused MBA aspirant - 02-06-2008, 05:09 AM

This is one of those dilemmas that i feel comes out of having too many options than having no options...well to the point...i hail from a business family too...i have been trained as an electrical engineer from US...worked for a year as an IT consultant.

Now back in the UAE looking for work. But since i did not find any (the reasons are beyond me, though having a degree from US should have helped), i have been involved "part time" in the family apparel business. Its a very small business. Its just one retail outlet in ready made garments and two in textiles. Have been able to increase sales in the ready made garments outlet. But i still feel like if i go the route of standing on my feet by gaining more qualification in the field that interest's me more, then it would lead me to a better prospects. But fining no way to that i always think why not join the family business and expand. But still have not reached a conclusions. Any ways back to you....

There are certain questions you should ask your self an i have listed all of them below:

1) Where do you see your self down the line in 5 years time.
2) Then you should ask where is the business going in the 5 years time...will it be closed because lets say your father wants to retire and has no interest in it anymore (that being my case).
3) Where the business is situated, is it an environment you think you will grown in or is it just a dead end...where you might dig a hole that leads you into a deep abyss.
4) You should also ask your self what kind of life style you want and how long can you wait to get it.

There are more questions but don't remember them right now or i have no clue of as i am in the same boat as you are.

I hope this helps....and also hope some one who reads this gives me an advice that just makes sense and i can run with it...

Any ways later man and i hope we can come through this brain hacking dilemma.

Work for 2-3 years and then go for MBA. This would provide you further insight, to make firm decisions on your business.....
