Re: Top US B-Schools Advice -

hey umang...
by international MBA, i meant, for instance, IE's global MBA, or thunderbird's international business MBA. as far as the queen's and IE selection goes, well, a cousin of mine from the US recommended them as schools that don't enforce the minimum work experience canon...
the reason i'm looking abroad for this is because, to my knowledge, the only reputed course in India is the one at IIFT.
i'd like to get an idea as to what my chances are of getting into a decent IMBA course with my level of experience. any tips on which schools to look for?
one more thing : when i take a date for the GMAT, i can take a list of five b-schools that will get my score. what exactly is the significance of this? if i don't send my score to any university, will i have to pay GMAC $28 to send it to them later, or can i send it myself when i receive my score?
thanks!

Hi mitr333,
There's nothing in particular that admissions officers are looking for. As vague as this sounds, they're looking for characteristics -- such as leadership, commitment, passion, professional potential, teamwork etc. Whatever you choose to do for the next three years, make sure it's a job that gives you plenty of potential to demonstrate these characteristics. This doesn't necessarily mean quitting a job just because you're not directly supervising people, but rather in what role you are playing the job should allow you to take initiative and responsibility. As for your specific question about getting another job, I wouldn't be too hasty in making such a decision -- you could spend three solid years at your IT job now, build a competitive profile, do well on the GMAT, and then get into a great B-school!

Hi Rajat,
Sorry about the confusion. Apart from the big names that appear in every list, some other schools that have great IMBA programs in the US are (like you mentioned) Thunderbird, South Carolina - Moore, U Mich - Ross, and USC-Marshall. To be honest, I'm not sure how lenient they are with their work ex requirements but as a rule I know that European business schools favor more work experience (and have an older average age) than American B-schools.
I think with the GMAT you lose the free test score sending to 5 schools, if you don't do it on the day of the test itself. After that you have to pay $28 to send an additional report. So my advice would be to make sure you utilize the free sending option to any 5 prospective schools you may apply to

Hey Umang,
Appreciate the great work you have been doing helping all of us. Thanks a bunch..!!
My Profile:
GMAT: 690 (Q50,V34)
10th - 89%
12th - 96%
Undergraduation: B. Tech from NIT CG:8.2 / 10
Work Ex:
Working at TCS (Pre-Sales) for the past 27 months.
ECA: Decent. Won several awards during schooling and college, CSR activities, Published a whitepaper.
I know i have reduced my chances to get into Harvard, Stanford, Wharton and Columbia by a dismal GMAT score
I wanted to know whether i still have a chance at some of the schools (Duke,Yale,Booth) in the US where i can fund my MBA through loans (without co-signer) ?
Your two cents please..
Best Regards,
Ritesh

Hey Umang,
I just gave a mock Gmat prep and scored 590 without any preparation at all.
There were a lot silly mistakes in this. I am hoping to touch 700 with full practice(will try). My profile is as follows
10th ICSE 74%
12th Science 69%
Graduation- 71% BMS(finance)
Work Ex-
1 year in a small Financial services co. but did good work i.e valuation of Intangible assets(PPA) with respect to IFRS and other things.
2 years with in family business. All kinds of work done here ranging from operations to strategies so setting up a new supply chain for products and currently working on a Market research project for m company in collaboration with a local management institute. Contributed signifcantly and can prove it.
Will complete 3 years of work ex by the time mba starts.
My questions:
1 How does the profile sound to you? Comments on the same.
2 Is the work experience gained in family business going to handicap me?

Hi,
Heartiest congratulations on the admit and really appreciate this initiative, an absolute godsend for me trying to cope with the app process from under tons of office work.
Please evaluate my profile and suggest options -
Mumbai University throughout
10 - 84%
12 - 75%
Engg - 65% (8 sem average)
GMAT - 730 (Q 49, V 40, AWA 5)
6 months non-IT (Electrical field). 6 yrs work-ex in IT, 3 years of international exp. Helped Dad setup a Chemist shop.
Extra-Curriculars - Nothing much to write about
Please recommend some schools in top 20 where I stand a good chance of getting admits. Also, if possible, couple of low ends school that will good scholarships.

Re: Top US B-Schools Advice -

Hey Umang,
Congratulations on the HBS admit. I'm planning to apply to Stanford and Darden this year. Although, I'd like to get an MBA from a b-school in Europe, I feel that lower work-ex, especially because I'm in the IT field, will not give me bright chances. Anyway, my profile in brief:
10th :89%
12th :94%
UG : 7.7/10 (BTech, IITB)
GMAT : 770
Work-ex : 3 years (IT)
Extra-curriculars: Good (Football, theatre mainly)
The thing I'm worried about is that I have no formal leadership experience at work.
One more thing I'm worried about is intl. work-ex. Although, I'm fluent in German, I have hardly any experience abroad, except for a one week official trip to Vienna.
I'd like to know your suggestions on how to counter these two points in the application.
Thanks
