New! [2009] ISB Hyderabad official thread: Admissions Director Dr VK Menon answers! - 09-07-2009, 12:56 PM

Dear all,

This is almost a tradition between PaGaLGuY and ISB Hyderabad now.

For the third year in a row, here's presenting the ISB Official Admissions Query thread featuring the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad Admission Director for the Class of 2011 admission season!

This thread is where ISB's Senior Director, Career Advancement Services and Admissions & Financial Aid, Mr VK Menon answers all your questions about ISB PGP admissions, scholarships, placements, faculty, infrastructure, culture and student life.

Here is a personal message from Mr VK Menon.

Good Luck in your preparations.

V K Menon
The DOs

1. Please Go through the thread pages first, most probably your question has already been asked by somebody else and asking it again will be a redundant activity. By reading through the thread, you will also learn a lot of interesting facts about ISB through other users' questions.

2. Go through the ISB Admission FAQ page for answers to the most commonly asked questions.

3. If your question or a similar question has NOT been asked before, you can post your questions about ISB Hyderabad or MBA careers here by hitting the 'Post Reply' button on top or by clicking here.

4. Mr Menon and his team, who will watch this thread will answer all your queries on a regular basis. So once you post your question, you can come back to this thread in a couple of days to find your answer or even better, Subscribe to this thread by clicking on the 'Thread tools' link on the top-right side at the top of the thread.

The DON'Ts

1. NO PROFILE CHECK questions allowed - Please do not ask questions of the type: 'The following are my marks and my work experience so What are my chances at ISB?' - such type questions are not allowed and will simply be deleted. This thread is not meant to be a dipstick test to measure your admission feasibility.

2. No asking redundant questions. First read through the thread. If you don't find your question already asked, only then ask.

ISB's eligibility criteria
To be eligible to apply to ISB Hyderabad, you need:
* A Bachelor’s degree
* A valid GMAT Score
* 2 years full-time work experience after graduation
* TOEFL or IELTS score only if language of instruction during undergraduate education was not English

Dr Menon's PG User ID is Admissions@ISB.

All the best!

Thank you Dr.Menon and your team.
I have two queries,
1.I am a marine engineer by profession.Due to the nature of my profession, the supervisors(chief engineers,2nd engineers) are all different in every ship. Also these superiors are not provided official email-ids by the company cus these same ppl may be assigned a different ship in their next contract and every ship has a single distinct email id.My query is regarding collecting recommendations due to the ISB policy of submitting official email IDS of immediate supervisors.I could submit the official email ID's of my head office managers but i dont think it would be accurate as I havent worked under them at sea.The only way I could think of was submitting hardcopies from my superiors I have worked under.I would be very thankful for any suggestion you could give.
2.My second query is regarding the kind of help extended to people who are intrested in learning more about international business and supply chain management. And what are the various work and growth opportunities in this sector in india.

thank you

Re: New! [2009] ISB Hyderabad official thread: Admissions Director Dr VK Menon answer - 10-07-2009, 09:07 PM

Dear Dr. Menon,

The statistics of the class of 2010 shows that nearly 60% of the admits belong to 3-6 yrs experience category, while only 6% of the admits belong to 8+ yrs experience category.

Does ISB has a preference towards relatively young blood?

Regards
Gunajit

Question regarding recommendations - 11-07-2009, 12:14 AM

Dear Mr.Menon,

I got dinged last year, the feedback I received was bad essays. I admit I didn't put much thought into my essays and listed out things which were already evident from my application, like grades work -ex etc.

For the record I have an MS in electrical engg. from IIT Chicago.
I have been working since May 2007 in Chicago for a Spanish company. My responsibilities include managing the procurement, design and build of their toll collection systems. I am also involved in business process definition, operations and contractor oversight. I have internship exp. in General Electric and have worked for 10 months at Motorola as a Test Engineer.

Total work ex minus internship at GE is 3 years and 8 months till April 2011.

My undergrad acads are 63%, and grad school GPA is 3.3
GMAT - 720
extracurricular - Worked with NGOs in Mumbai, New york and currently Texas. Won numerous awards in caricature and sketching contests. Organized and marketed college festivals.

With my work-ex and acads, I hope the only reason for the reject was my essays, which I am really working on this time around.

I did not ask my current company's supervisors for a recommendation, I got them from my undergrad professor and my supervisor from Motorola. How much does a recommendation from a current employer count?

My employer has started my green card process, they won't be very pleased that I will be leaving for India to do my MBA. So I am in two minds, since this is my re-application, should I go with the same recos or get new ones?

Dear Mr. Menon,

I have been helping my father in his construction work. The application requires us to fill the company name, designation and salary slip. But we do not have a registered firm under which we are doing the construction work. Neither do I have any post or salary slip for the same. Please tell me in such a case what should I fill in the application.

Thanks
Varun Doda.

You may use “offline evaluation” option available on our application web site. With the offline option, we will be sending out a blank reference form to you and you inturn can forward it to the referee. The filled in form can then be sent directly to us by the referee.

The centres of excellence - Centre for Global Logistics and Manufacturing Strategies - could help you. There are also elective courses in these areas available that students can take up. India being a fast growing developing economy, there are ample career opportunities in this area.

Discuss the designation within your family and put it up.

For Salary proof- you can submit a self declared letter.
