Re: New! [2009] ISB Hyderabad official thread: Admissions Director Dr VK Menon answer - 14-07-2009, 01:28 PM

Hello Dr Menon,

I have started filling the application online and I have following queries on the application process.

1) Under the education details section for both Year 12 and Undergraduate College, the application asks for dates attended in the form of dd/mm/yyyy. I do know the month I joined college but not the exact date(day of the month) and it is not there on any of the certificates issued by the college authorities either. How do we go about filling these details? Do we have to approach the colleges to provide us with the details and the college might take time as I have finished my year 12th, 9 years ago.

2) Under applicant Information --> Personal details --> Parents Details
Fathers occupations, options provided are
Working - Retired - Homemaker - Deceased
In my case my father was a member of Legislative assembly but retired. So should I be selecting the option as Retired and Employer as Government of Karnataka? Will this be sufficient?.

3) For evaluators, Do I need to give their personal address? Or their Official address should suffice?

Apart from these a generic question, is there any specific reason for having 300 words count for the essays?

Thanks & Warm regards.

For the record I have an MS in electrical engg. from IIT Chicago.
I have been working since May 2007 in Chicago for a Spanish company. My responsibilities include managing the procurement, design and build of their toll collection systems. I am also involved in business process definition, operations and contractor oversight. I have internship exp. in General Electric and have worked for 10 months at Motorola as a Test Engineer.

Total work ex minus internship at GE is 3 years and 8 months till April 2011.

My undergrad acads are 63%, and grad school GPA is 3.3
GMAT - 720
extracurricular - Worked with NGOs in Mumbai, New york and currently Texas. Won numerous awards in caricature and sketching contests. Organized and marketed college festivals.

With my work-ex and acads, I hope the only reason for the reject was my essays, which I am really working on this time around.

I did not ask my current company's supervisors for a recommendation, I got them from my undergrad professor and my supervisor from Motorola. How much does a recommendation from a current employer count?

My employer has started my green card process, they won't be very pleased that I will be leaving for India to do my MBA. So I am in two minds, since this is my re-application, should I go with the same recos or get new ones?
  1. Essays are very important, try to distinguish yourself from the highly competitive applicant pool.
  2. The referee you choose should be a person who knows you well and be able to write about your capabilities with confidence. If in your opinion an undergraduate professor is the right person that is perfectly fine.
You can use the recommendations you have used in the last appications again (that option is available). You have one recommendation from your supervisor in Motorola you could also explore getting one from your supervisor in GE during your internship there.

Dear Mr. Menon,

I am a first time applicant. Thank you for sparing your valuable time to answer our queries. I'd be obliged if you can answer the following.

During my GMAT exam, there was a problem with my computer system (some technical hitch) due to which I lost 5-7 minutes (and it also added to my stress levels). The GMAT center was a new one, and the staff/admin was inexperienced. They admitted that were facing such a problem for the first time. They were not aware of the 'unscheduled break' that should have been activated while my system was being restored. This happened during my AWA section and I have received a score of 4.5 (although i have a decent and balanced GMAT score - 700+)

My question is will this low score be compared with my application essays? Will my essays (I'm sure they'll be good) raise eyebrows when compared to my AWA score? Should I write an official mailer to Princeton complaining about the inefficiency of the centre officials (considering all activity during my test was recorded)

Thanks a million !

Regards
Preeti

Dear Mr. Menon,

I am a reapplicant and have few queries...

1. Can i resubmit one recommendation and keep the other one...i want to explore a recommendation from my current manager but my second recommendation would be from my ex-manager which i have already submitted.

2. Does the adcom also have a look at a re-applicant's past application.

Thanks,
Ankit

The month and year have to be accurate.
The date can be put 01.

The official address only.

The count is to make sure an applicant expresses oneself articulately in limited words.

You may take up the issue with the GMAC, or Prometric Testing (P) Ltd., giving details of what transpired.

The entire application is considered while shortlisting, so don’t worry much on your AWA score now.
