Re: ISB class of 2011 aspirants!!! - 08-11-2009, 12:12 AM

Hi All,

I had my interview today at ISB campus..it is entirely profile basd and ISB adcom wants to check whether I really have those leadership qualities that I have mentioned in my application. The adcom is very professional and co-operative also i must say.

I think the interview is ok because I was just myself and answered them straight from heart... This is one of those interviews where I can't say something conclusively ... so waiting for final results with fingers crossed.

Advise: Be prepared for every question about your profile.
The panel is very friendly and comforting, so just use the oppurtunity and nail the interview.

No post in last 24 hours. Surprising. I am sure almost all R1 guys must be done with their interview stuff so everybody is just waiting for the final call to post some stuff over here. However, I thought R2 applicants will keep the buzz alive. Lets see.

We(R1 guys I mean ) did an amazing speculation for almost everything. So what do you think the number of applications for R2 will be. I thought this is a kind of right trigger to pull R1 guys from their hideouts.

Have a feeling that the R2 count - from a PG perspective is going to be less than R1... or we may have a lot of shy R2 spectators..

What was the estimated count in R1 (speculated)?

I am a R2 applicant. Not able to update my application since yesterday (no pic or doc uploading; it is the most basic address and educational details) !! Is there a problem with the server ? (Tried on both chrome and IE)

Any other R2 applicant facing this issue?

Should I do something other than hoping the server to get alright (or is the issue something else?)

Re: ISB class of 2011 aspirants!!! - 08-11-2009, 02:13 PM

Hi all,

As i said that i'l post my exp today. My brief profile first:

GMAT- 730/6.0
Exp - 9+ (IT field)
Acads - Good
EC - Good

Had my interview in delhi at Hyatt on 13th Oct. I/v time was 10.20 am. Reached there at around 9.45 am. Got the essay to write on "Reality TV". Wrote someything

Talked to fellow applicants who were also waiting for their turns. Finally an adcom member came to call me at arnd 10.50 am. Here is the exp:

There were 4 people. One was the adcom member (AD) & the other two were alums - one male (A1) & other female (A2). And one was a silent observer .. seemed like a old person. He was silent thoughout the i/v.

AD: You seem to a loyal person to the company as u have sticked arnd with ur current co for 6 yrs now. In ur field people move in 1 or 2 yrs. Why?
Me: I like my company. Explained all the learnings that I have recieved in the comp. blah blah. (Did gud here .. gud start i thot)

AD: Asked me something regarding the technology that i just said in my last sentence of the previous ans
Me: Explained well here. (Felt gud)

A1: How big team u lead?
Me: 22

A1: Are all diect reports?
Me: Yes.

A1: Any conflict among team members?
Me: Yes, sometimes. Though people are smart now a days. No one comes for personal stuff. If only someone's work is getting affected, then only they will come to u.

A1: Example?
Me: Told them of an instance in the 2 projects that i am managing. Explained how i tried to resolve it.

A1: Ok gud. Who is the best among those 22 & why & the worst among those 22 & why?
Me: All are gud with everyone having his / her strong points. Hard to find favs

A1: Come on don't be political here. Some one has to be fav & why?
Me: Ok. Told them abt a person as he is always ready to help others. Told them how i once fought for his promotion.

AD: Wht is ur biggest achievement?
A2: That is close to ur heart?
Me: Ok. Told them abt it. Explained the situation. I kind of covered that in the 2nd essay in the app. Substantiated it (I think did well here).

AD: Man, u are doing gud. Already a manager. Why do u want to do an MBA?
Me: I was expecting this ques. Was prepared for it. Explained my point.
Substantiated the 3rd essay here. Explained points of why ISB as well here.

A1: How do u ustify the ROI?
Me: Look at the long term .. Learnings .. blah blah .. money part shall be taken are of automatically

AD: Do people at ur work place know of this?
Me: Yes, my supervisor is one of the recommenders. My SBU head knows this. They are supportive. I might go back to my company after completing MBA.

A2: Wud u take sabatical?
Me: Yes sort of. Though i have to work it out formally later on. Lets see.

AD: Will ur company sponsor u?
Me: No, no such policy in the company.

A1: Describe yourself. how do people see u?
Me: Described myself professionally ..

A1: No, outside of work ..
Me: Described myself at home.

A1: No, how abt with friends?
Me: Did that as well .. finally he seemed satisfied.

AD: Asked me abt the social society that i am associated with .. kind of ridiculed it .. "As far as i know, they are just for entertainment stuff & all" ..
Me: Explained the kind of work that is done by my society & how i contribute for it .. (did pretty well here) ..

A1: Majority of the class wud be junior to u at ISB. How wud u take it?
Me: As an opportunity to learn from them Junior / senior doesn't matter. Anyone can learn from anyone if he / she wants to ..

A2: Gud. Thanks. Any questions for us?
Me: Asked them abt their collborations with foreign schools. blah blah.

A1: Anything else?
Me: Ok, asked abt the new campus @ mohali .. blah blah ..

AD: Anything esle?
Me: No, thanks.

Handshakes all aroung & i left.

In all it was arnd 30 minutes i/v. Pretty easy going. A conversation through out. No stress at all. Totally app based i wud say. All questions either originating from my app / essays or from my previous answers. Very cordial panel i must say.
Came out pretty satisfied, but now i get the feeling that may be a better ans of that ques can be this & all sort of things. Fingers crossed. Waiting for 25th now eagerly.

Ok guys, this is all. I hope this is helpful to guys who have their i/vs left or for R2 guys. Just know your app well & u'll do gud.

All the very best to all

Re: ISB class of 2011 aspirants!!! - 08-11-2009, 02:24 PM

Hi All.
Infrequent visitor here. Thought I'd create an acct to share my i/v experience with all.

Panel : One Lady prof from the adcom, two alums.
Profile : GMAT 760/4.5; IT/Telecom, 4+ years work-ex; Decent EC's.

Essay Topic: Music Therapy

Q1: What do you like about your work ?
Q2: What motivates you and why ?
Q3: Tell me about some leadership experience you've had. Any Learning’s ?
Q4: Question about EC's (basically a follow up from prev Q)
Q5: Tell me about the experience mentioned in your challenging assignment essay (few follow up Q's there)
Q6: Why ISB (finally :P)
Q7: What would you do if you had to head an office in the Govt? How would you motivate etc.
Q8: What would you look for if you to had to pick your own team for an IT project.
Q9: A lot of questions about telecom market in US (I work in an American telco) and then moved to the Indian scene. Would I recommend my company to set up shop in India.

And that was about it. Lasted about 30 mins. Overall a pleasant, interactive session. All Q's basically stemmed from the application.
I think the important thing was to take the whole experience more like a conversation rather than a Q&A session.
Anyway now, for the long wait (fingers crossed)
Hope this helps. Best of Luck to all.

Me too an R2 applicant. I faced no such problems. In fact I just uploaded few scanned copies.

Hi Puys,

Have been a lurker around here for sometime, am an R2 applicant this year.

Have a couple of questions for R1 puys and anybody else who would care to answer:

1. The alums on the interviews are real alums or current students? I understand that some schools have current students on the adcom, how about ISB?

2. Do they ask you to write another essay before the interview?

Cheers
