I think my essays were my strength. In fact during my Great lakes inteview, the prof said "It was pleasure reading your essays"

I had applied to only 3 schools this year:
ISB - converted
Great lakes- Converted.
IFMR -Financial Engineering -Shortlisted for interview on march 9th. -Am opting out of this though.

Cheers

My friend, just be passionate about your essays. They are personal. If you write something that you dont believe in, then they would definetly catch u on your interview! Although i dont have much experience in that front, this is from hearsay..

Placements this year have been disastrous.
2 of my seniors from TCS-husband and wife-after graduating from ISB this year have become so frustrated and disillusioned that they have opened a juice shop right on the gates of ISB.
By the time we people make to ISB there will be a lot of shops on the gates of ISB (of our seniors)-a chaat wala, a cycle tube puncture wala, a paan wala.............
Things are going to get much worse the next year.

Dont get me wrong, I would be least bothered even if placements go low as long as I get an ISB degree.

'm just asking... how are you planning to circumvent it ?
Thanks mustang-It does not matter what I do for a living, as long as i do what my heart says!ISB, anyday is ISB

"Heart has its reason, which reason knows nothing of"- this was infact one of the essays at Gr8Lakes

Lemme tell u something..I started building my profile for ISB 2 years ago-I was a techie then disgruntled with work though working for a big brand-decided to join a start up for better roles though the pay was much lesser.did, Presales,Business Development, also did some consulting assignments for clients
In 2007 I had just 3 months exp in the startup and I knew I was not ready for ISB yet. Then I took up additional responsibilities at work to build my profile.

After the interview, I knew I'd not be rejected rightaway as I met all their eligibility criteria .Only two things would happen:

A wailtlist & then a Ding with a possible feedback indicating there should be more energy during the discussion-I was actually quite nervous during the interview (Tip: If you are putting on blazer pls ensure you are comfortable by trying out a few times before the mirror at home.Else a plain shirt would do-I was not comfirtable with blazer at all .I felt it was stifling me)

A selection - I felt confident I had a very good profile and I had put in dedicated efforts towards the application. After the intial nervousness I felt confident again, especially after solving a puzzle the interviewer gave me.

But yea I had my exit options,If not ISB I'd have joined IFMR for their Financial Engineering prog-the course content is just awesome and so are the faculty handling them

To reiterate- It does not matter what I do for a living as long as I keep doing what I'm passionate about

cheers!

Sorry Mustang..I was so involved in the earlier post that I completely missed answering your main question!

During My interview when they asked me the same question I told this:
I'm open to roles in technology & finance

Interviewer : Ok. You get Tech Lead at Infosys and Retail sales ad Kotak Mahindra.Which would you take and why?

Me:Infy. As I analytical bend of mind.

Interviewer: You said you moved into start-up as you wanted client facing roles. In your option you may not meet the client-you get only execute what the sales guy tells you to do

Me: Order of preference is problem solving then Client facing

Interviewer:What role in finance are you expecting:

Me: Financial Modeling/actuarial roles.

Interviewer: So you are ok to work for Insurance companies?Lemme give another scenario.Team lead at Infosys and some company like TATA AIG

Me: TATA AIG. As long as it involves mathmodleing I'd take it up

Abt Circumeventing the situation I think my background had prepared me for BD or Product management roles in a Tech firm or in getting into consulting (Since I'm quite averse to travelling away from home I need to seriously evaluate if consulting is for me or not.I prefer staying closer home)

About analytical finance- If the role is good, and I'd seriously give it a thought before considering salary trade-offs

Cheers

@ roshanathomas & Sandy,
as mentioned by ususal suspect, there are no right/wrong answers- you just gotta be PASSIONATE , I mean ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY passionate about your essays. No Cheating yourself.Instead of writing what you think the panel would like reading you gotta be true to yourself.Your conviction shows through.

Regarding what I wrote in my essays here'e the outline

ISB essays:
3 reasons why isb should take you : Highligted how I'm a great team player from examples@ work and my teaching endeavours (TIME,NLP,Softskills, math camps etc). I also made it clear that I don't desire what I don't deserve.

Presidential campaign Address: Made a few points and highlighted that irresspecitive of whether I'm president or not I'd continue supporting ISB.
I did not try to conivnce the audience by highligting achievements.
I was true to myself

Zumba river: Postioned how the dam project would be key to the village's economy.

gr8 lakes Essays:
Why great lakes: Answer- Leverage.(faculty, students, foreign collabs etc) + my expectations from the MBA

Character comes out in crisis : A work-like example.

Heart has its reason which reason knows nothing of : One example of how following dreams helped. One example of how thinking about results screwed me up-Being honest is the key.

B-schooler are driven by power and money: It's ok as long as a guy earns his money legitimately.however social consicuousness helps is sustaining growth.

Like I said, to each his own. These are no where near ideal answers. I've learnt from my bosses that It was important for me to sincerely want my team members to win.My strengths are :
team skills, humour & language.I made sure I played by these.Let me give you an example :

during the first isb essay I mentioned 3 points and I felt I hadn't highlighted my leadership qualties so included a fourth point as a bonus reason with a byline (I always deliver more than I promise!)

I did not hide behind formalism-Being humourous was my natural and i did not restrict myself. At the same I did not overdo it to project as if I lacked maturity. humourous Vs funny -you gotta draw a line.

bottom line :Let your personality shine through your essays.

cheers
srini

hello sweetgirl1985,
whts the motive of ur post? i m sorry i cudnt follow it at all! here, everyone is trying to get an admit first. Placements are not currently our worry.. (maybe paan waala with the rite strategy wud get u more money!! , u never know!). I m sorry to hear abt ur seniors, but the scenario is as such.! but i m sure their ISB brand value wud help them on a long term.. ! (juice shop near a college is not a bad idea at all!!).
Dont u think its too early to talk abt this? considering tht the application itself is not open !!
good luck !!
Cheers,

Re: ISB class of 2011 aspirants!!! - 08-03-2009, 12:53 PM

Talked with a friend of mine (he is an advocate) who is still waiting with 150 others for placement at ISB.I informed him of the business standard news
http://www.business-standard.com/ind...5-lakh/350840/
and he became very furious.
He stated that there are 150 guys at ISB who have still not been placed and are ready to grab any damn offer (provied any offer is made) even as low as 3 to 5 lakhs per annum. Then how can ISB give misleading information to the press that placements are being made between 13 and 15 lakhs. He became so furios that he has made up his mind that if ISB claims an average CTC of above 7 lakhs this year he will take ISB to court for duping/making fool of innocent students.I hope ISB is reading.
He has also stated that the last 100 placements that have taken place at ISB have taken place approx at an average of 5 lakh.
He blames/accuses the students more than ISB for the present state of affairs. He makes the following pointers:
1)Guided by greed (after looking at the average CTC) students come to ISB
2) When already there is such big problem placing the present batch how can ISB dare to increase its seats from 440 to 560-if students still not understand the greedy/cunning design of ISB then the students deserve it.
