Please try and share as much info as you can get about GD/PI from friends in AIM, as Ram did.
There is little time left guys, start pouring your responses.

Re: AIM 2009- GD/PI Call Getters - 09-01-2009, 07:19 PM

My GD-PI Experience Last year
------------------------------

Disclaimer : These are my real experiences, and some of the observations are purely my own [may or not be true at all], so rely on my observations and interpretations solely at your own risk.

My Letter of intent, or the SOP........

Well, I had given a write-up [as u all would have given while filling up the forms] where I did project myself as someone willing to be a people's manager. Thats my strength on the whole. I can gel with people very well and then get the best out of the person. I wanted those people to feel the same throughout my essays............basically I didn't want to hide this strength of mine.......and wanted to keep them involved on this very thing throughout the interview.

[why did I tell this??? will be clear by the time this post ends.... ]

My AIM Interview and GD & PI preparation........

I was aware of the GD pattern through my friends who were already studying at AIM......its always a case study......where you will be given a case study and you will be given some time to read the case and then the whole group will be asked to discuss the same...........for some 15-20 mins and if they see that the group is not being able to reach to a conclusion then they may give some more time.

So all I did for this part was that I used to watch a lot of TV talk shows.....like 'Face the nation' from CNN-IBN........and just used to read the body language of all the people..... and used to derive the impact of his/her point. [My whole preparation of GD came from this, I didn't not do anything else. No mock GD or anything else].

For PI, it was knows that they will discuss the mostly about my GD and then they will create some pressure by attacking on me with some random question and then they will switch on to my profile and then the SOPs. [I believe this is what happens in almost all the personal interviews].

{Thankfully, I was lucky in this area......because just before the GD-PI thing happened....I was on a campus recruitment drive for almost 2 months......and I took more than 500 interviews.....and I could understand the interviewer's psychology. And this helped me immensely to mold myself into a better and suitable candidate for a personal interview. I must say I was luckier on this front.}

On the interview day...........

My interview was during the afternoon hours [after lunch].........so I took all sweet time to wake up in the morning.......and slept as much as possible........and when I woke up.....I was well aware that I have to go to the interview in as much casual way as possible [by casual I just mean my attitude, and not the dressing or my language]. I decided I will not wear tie-suit kind of thing because I wanted to show that I am here during a weekend and that too after the lunch hours.......ofcourse this interview is important to me, but then I would prefer to walk easily after lunch rather than walking worried about my suit getting tight or tie being uncomfortable to me.
[trust me.....I am like this only.......I never wear tie-suit when its an important occasion...because I find it discomforting to an unimaginable extent......and hence I prefer to walk in my office formal dress.......but I do care a lot about my formal dressing.........the shoes and the belt should match in colour....watch should reflect the same flavour......and also the spects......trouser should be comfortable and the shirt should be sober in colour. All these are my definitions of looking comfortable and presentable without a tie-suit. ]

{Note : Almost all the guys were wearing the normal B-School attire.....and they were all looking like some corporate honchos..........and I believe thats the best way to go to a B-school interview........because thats the way other successful people have been attending interviews. So don't take any cues from my ways of going to the interview.....my way could turn out to be a risky thing to do. So, please avoid it.}

Once the dressing is done....lets move to the other better things.......

I aways knew that GD is gonna be all chaos and no substance......and this is always my biggest fear.........but then there is a way out for this........we are all human beings........and once we get to know each other we will always let the other person speak........at least whenever he is talking something meaningful...........so what I did was to reach the venue at least an hour before.....and then spotted my group of people.....this will not be too difficult, at least with AIM, because all the group will be waiting in front of a room.....there will be many people...but you have to build a rappo with your group in whatever time you get.......and make sure that the discussion which goes later has to be smooth [trust me, it makes huge difference].........I was successful in making that connection with people in that 30-45 min.....and that connection grew out to be so good that I am in touch with them even now.........inspite of the fact that most of them didn't make it to AIM and we never ever met after that AIM's GD. [I told you na.....I can gel with people very well ... ]

Anyway..........out group's GD session was one of the most disciplined and the most harmonious GD........we all gave each other an opportunity to speak [as long as that made sense]........and we all spoke very well......[see the power of giving opportunity to others to speak]........

It was slightly surprising to note that the professor and one more person who was noticing us during the whole GD duration left not even a single opportunity to take pictures of all of us.....he was taking pictures at all those special moments...........whenever someone said something important point or did some special activity while negating the point posed by others.

[Later we got to know that the prof was a Organizational Behavior prof..... and he keeps on taking pics for his reference with his extremely amazing camera..........his name is some Ryes.........and he is considered to be one of the strict profs in the institute.....would be better if none of you get him as your interviewer ].

Well, in the GD I spoke for around 5-6 times, and I gave a conscious opportunity to speak others at least 2-3 times........and then that positive body language towards what others are saying......I believe I was clicked by Mr Ryes on more than 5 occasions

GD was done.....and instantly our group got the feedback from the prof......that we were the best GD groups ever

During the Personal Interview...............

I was sitting infront of 5 people...........One was Mr Ryes[the prof].....who was sitting with his camera and the laptop with him.........and then there was one very old alumni who was some big shot business man outside India..was here in India on some vacation........and then there was one guy who was slightly younger than the oldest alumni and was working at Bangalore .... looked quite senior...........and then other Alumni were in the decreasing order of experience...........

Each alumni was aware of my SOP and my GD performance...........

And by the time I had entered into the room...they knew my name and details about me .......

They had a hell lot of questions in the starting,.....ranging from my name...to the state I belong to.....and how I felt about my GD performance.....etc etc......

There was a girl in my GD group........they wanted to know my opinion about her.....etc etc.....

Till now...they had almost made me sweat....literally!

and now the prof took the entire charge and wanted to know about my work-ex and all........trust me...they made me feel that - Why the hell did I ever apply to this college? They wanted to know all the details......and somehow you can't lie......afterall the person sitting infront of you is a Organizational Behaviour professor, and not to forget to the 4 alumni...they are just reading your reactions........and at the same time they are more or less judging you and taking notes of things.

And then the last part came.....my SOPs......this was what I was waiting for......they wanted a re-confirmation of what all I wrote in the letter of intent.........they kept on talking and listening for than 30 mins about the SOPs............every detail...........I was alomost tired when I was done....

And in the whole course of this last part....the prof was more interested in taking notes of whatever I was talking.....and taking pics whenever I was reacting in those Eureka moments

By the end.....the prof asked me one question - With which two other people from your GD would u like to attend the AIM classes.........and I did answer that almost instantly......and then they wanted to know the reason for the same.....I did give them.........and then one more series of questions started......about why did I choose them.

[this is a normal routine of AIM....they almost always ask you to choose two people from your GD group with whom you would want to attend the classes at AIM. They derive so many things from this answer.]

Anyway......after they were done with the questions....they wanted me to ask some questions.........and I did ask them 2 questions......at which all the alumni and the professors took some time to answer the questions.....

On the whole my interview lasted for more than 1 hr......and I was extremely tired after the session........and I needed to run for a smoke after the interview was done....and there I met one alumni.......and we talked for around 2 mins while smoking.......and then I was sure that if not any great impression.......at least I have not disappointed anyone of them.

So that was my AIM GD-PI experience..........hope you guys take some positive cues from it.........

All the best to you all....may I get all the batch-mates among you guys

Thanks & Regards

No! I was not the one who was asked about the same........infact, neither I found anything wrong or inappropriate about about my dressing nor did anyone else in the interview panel..........ya, the guys who had come for the interview did see me with a suspicious eye........and I do not blame them for their suspicion over my incapability or the unpreparedness ........afterall u r going for a B-School interview....so at least follow the accepted trend....or else create a new trend [but at your own risk!]

My venue was one of the one of the hotels @ St Marks Rd [Near MG Rd, Bangalore], and there were eight people in my GD group.....two people didn't turn-up.......basically the grps are normally formed with 10 people.
