Re: SDA Bocconi, Italy - 2008-09 MBA Student taking questions -

Hi Bocconi_09,
I am in the process of applying to the european colleges for MBA program.
I am interested in applying to Boconi as it definitely has a very good reputation in europe for MBA program. However I am in a dilemma whether I should give it a try since my GMAT score is 620,which is considered low and I have an experience of over 3 years in Telecom and Manufacturing Industry.
I am not sure how good is GMAT 620 for SDA bocconi ?
whether students in bocconi have profiles similar to mine?

Though we have students with that score (or even lower), I would say that 620 is not a very competitive score (irrespective of the school u apply) unless you have something very unique to offer for eg - u started a company, spearheading critical projects, etc.
When u say Manufacturing, do you mean core manufacturing ?? If so then that could be an interesting profile
Also consider: If you want to get into Consulting/IB post MBA, any CV with less than 680 is normally rejected by the companies (unless backed by significant industry / country experience .. for e.g. oil & gas exploration in middle east)

Thanks for the prompt response.
I would not want a job in consultancy. My preference is to work in a global footwear/garment manufacturing firm to gain experience and finally join my family business.Yes ,we manufacture footwear and footwear products. We do lot of business in europe, basically supply footwear to up market brands in europe.
My reason for applying to bocconi is not only doing MBA but also understanding the european culture and way of life.

Well ... that would be a very interesting profile for SDA and I would definitely encourage you to apply.
Also have a look at the MAFED program SDA Bocconi : MAFED - Why?

I had my interview on 23-Jan with Prof. Mikkel,. Interview went well. Can anybody tell how much time SDA usually takes to release the decisions?
I have also been offered a place at Lancaster and have got only two weeks to make a decision. Will SDA release decision earlier than usual, if I request them?
Sdaboccono_09, please share your thoughts on this... Anybody else on this forum got the admit?

1. seek more time from Lancaster. If ur a good candidate they should not mind extending the deadline by another 2 weeks.
2. request SDA to update u asap. in my case they took less than 2 weeks

Hi Bocconi_09,
I found your answers very helpful. I would like to ask you some things. I am gathering all the information available respecting accomodation, required clothing and job prospects. I am enrolled in the 35th MBA full time edition comencing in october 2009, so any advice will be highly valued.
Accomodation.
The SDA Bocconi page tells you that they will help you to find accomodation when you arrive there. I would like to know your experience. I am tempted to rent a room by myself because I may not find roommates focused on studiyng. I would like to concentrate at least for the first 2 phases. Was it easy for you to find roommates or an apartment? How much now is the cost of a room, say, 40m2 or 60m2. Could you recommend me a nice neighbourhood / zones, quiet and secure?
I have read from a previous post of yours that the accomodation can be a trouble. What can I do to make it easy for me? What complaints do you have abour SDA Bocconi support in this matter?
Wheather.
This is another thing that worries me. How is the winter like in Milano? What clothes would you recommend me to take? Wool coats, overcoats? What will be the "must" items in general I may need during my stay in milan. I would appreciate if you could give me some details. Generally I dont like to carry too much luggage when traveling, but I have in my head that stuff there is very expensive, and I would like to save some euros buying things here. I have been told that cotton made clothing is specially expensive there.
Job prospects / Economic situation
With the financial crisis nearing his bottom cycle I wonder that things in Europe are not as promising as they were one year ago. I know that SDA Bocconi issues a Career Report that will come out by July 2009, but could you give a feedback on this? From which sector the recruiting companies are coming? Has the IFC recruited students? I am a financial risk manager, I would like to work in my field, but if is not the case I would not mind to work in other area, provided the salary is okay.
I would like to be prepared and do not get surprises if I can not get a position in Europe.
A friend of mine that studied an MBA in Barcelona told me that the recruiting companies offer you, even when you finish the MBA, internships where they pay you from Eur 500 to Euro 1500. Is it the case with the companies that visit SDA Bocconi? Are the interships project well payed? Have you heard about the starting salary? Please, comment me the case of foreign students only.
There are a lot of questions... I will be very greatfull if you could provide some relief to my curiosity.
Best regards,
Edson.

Hi,
Does sports have an added advantage for business schools in europe. I have acheived lots in cricket but am not sure if cricket will have weightage when I apply to Bocconi.
I found that the median GMAT score for getting an admit in Bocconi is around 670. What score does the school look for a person with normal profile(like 2 years of work ex from a software company).
Can you also let me know about the Scholarships offered in Bocconi. I read that 3 people from India get full, 80 and 70 pc scholarships.
Thanks in advance for your help and more queries are on the way.
