Re: NRI Admission to IIM - 12-04-2008, 10:44 PM

hi..
A few days ago, one of the people here had suggested that once the people who had decided to go with the IIM-B call should call/inform the admissions committee at the other IIMs to keep them out of the lists.. this would enable others a greater share of the pie..
Now , with all the IIMs delaying their results, and the last date for taking up the IIM B offer is the 14th, i request those who are going to take up the IIM B to inform the other IIMs to remove their names from the list..

My thinking is that if IIMB thinks that Nonchalant, PAsta , VOx and Eyemebaa are good enough for IIMB , they definately would be good enough for other IIMs as well... i hope this is taken in the right spirit...

Nonchalant, Pasta, Vox Eyembeaa- guys, no offense meant.. but try to see it from the point of view of others who might miss out cos you might end up having more calls... depending upon where all you have applied..

The other advantage is that if the guys at IIM A and IIM C know that a few of the people they were going to give the offer letter to would not take them up- they risk losing seats and in the present scenario where the admission committees are redoing their final lists, this info would enable them to take in applicants who are next on the list ...

i hope others share their views on this.. esp the lucky IIM B converts..

Thanks
Rascal

I must take a slightly contrarian view here. I have already offered my heartiest congratulations to those who have gotten in to IIM B (and add a tinge of jealousy at not being included in the coveted list ) But I believe that those of them who have applied to both IIM B and IIM C or A, are well within their rights to wait till this admission circus is over and the IIM C results are announced, deliberate their options and take an informed decision. If, anyone has made up their minds ABSOLUTELY, and knows for sure that they will chose one over the other, then that's a different issue. But I would be surprised if that is the case. I don't think its fair to begrudge anyone for the decisions they make.

Also, I am pretty sure the admission committees of these institutes are fully aware that the applicants are applying to the other IIMs as well. For that matter the case should be no different than when the admissions are handed out for the general CAT student. IIM C always hands out more admits than IIM A because they know that quite a few of their students will get in and accept the latter.

Also, you are assuming that there is some sort of a back-up list or a wait-list, they will go down if a few of these guys were to inform those institutes of their decision to join IIM B. I'm not entirely sure they do. I don't think these schools have a fixed number of seats for overseas candidates and won't really care if 5 attends one year and 3 the next.

But then again, I could stand corrected.

So yeah, unless you guys have made your minds up, let's all wait for this increasingly frustrating circus to come to an end and see where we all stand and then objectively evaluate the situation.

Haha.. I wish any of us knew. I suppose the best guess (mixed with some hope) is that the results will be announced sometime next week. However do bear in mind that there are only three working days next week.

sandipan.
The last date for accepting the IIM B offer is 14th april..
By then, the ones with the offer letter must take a decision. (unless there is an extention on that date).

I am with you on all counts when the final results were to be declared on 11th.

Now i dont think that we are going to know the results before 14th.

When you say- "only if absolutely sure"... i think that the postponement of the results will indirectly force them to make up their minds..

I think you will see situation differently now..

Cheers

I know that a couple of guys who have got through IIMB are still undecided whether to choose IIMB over IIMC (assuming they get an offer from them!). At the same time they really cannot risk leaving IIMB seat. So ofcourse they must have already sent in their drafts. But most B Schools do have a refund policy which allows the candidated to withdraw within a stipulated period of time. For example XLRI will only deduct 10% of the Program Fee paid in case we withdraw before 28th May.

I am assuming the IIMs must also have a similar poilicy - I remember reading it somewhere that its a Government directive though not too sure. So everyone who pays up now still has a chance to change mind and make a more informed decision at a later stage when all results are out.

I also agree with Sandipan that these IIMs would not have a waitlist for Overseas candidates as they would have factored in these movements while finalising the list. So at the moment we can just wait and hope for the best.

Cheers!

I agree with indiapore...
i just have few doubts though- is there a refund policy ?
and is anyone really aware of how the NRI waitlists prepared ? ... i would hate to lose a IIM A seat just because of an assumption that no lists are prepared...

Again- I request ppl with IIM B calls to give more information ...

Cheers

Re: NRI Admission to IIM - 13-04-2008, 04:24 AM

Hi all - just to rest some nerves, I applied only to IIMB. So technically I should not affect others' chances
On the other hand, though I have sent in the draft, I am not decided on whether I will be attending B.
It will be great if some of you guys can share your perspective/suggestions on my quandry-

1) Is IIM better than top US Bschools in terms of prospects?
I know it depends on a plethora of variables, especially boils down to 'where' I want to be.
Lets just say that I am equally open to continue in the states or pack my bags to India. In terms of ROI, you can repay the loan ~3 yrs out of an ivy league.

2) What can IIM actually do to your career?
Well, I am not talking about the few outliers who make ~$400K straight out of IIM. Where do average people land up? I am frankly concerned about making ~12L p.a after two years when my current pay is way ahead (even after taking the geographic variation into consideration)

Ultimately, I want to transition from tech to mgmt oriented roles (strat) and I am looking for a MBA to open those doors for me. So the question comes to - Which MBA will make more sense at this point in my career! I really wish I knew the answer to this. But the good thing is - I still have ~2 months to decide

Cheers and ATB for all those waiting on your decisions.
