Re: Ivey Mba - 10-08-2008, 05:58 PM

Hi,

I am evaluating IVEY MBA for the May 2009 intake. My profile is 730 / 5y / Project Manager + Business Development in ERP.

Post-MBA, I will be looking at Rotational leadership position in Technology / Telecommunication Industry. Ivey MBA program pretty much fits in my scheme of thing.

However, I am not really job market in Canada and especially, opportunities in the programs that I am interested in. Can someone point me towards some statics based on your research or first hand experiences?

Good to understand that you are interested in Ivey.
I have not much idea about telecom industry job prospects for Ivey grads, however, I do understand that you cannot go wrong by choosing to attend Ivey, given its quality curriculum and comprehensive alumni network. You might want to check Adventures in B-School (MBA), blogged by a fulltime Ivey MBA student who aspires to pursue a career in telecom industry, in capacity of general management.

Good luck on your applications.

Hi Demandez,
Have you already got an admit frm Ivey for May 2009? When do they start admissions for Fall 2009? My profile is

GMAT - 660
Acads - 65% Mumbai university
Just like you an IIM - Indian IT Male.

Any advice for while applying to Ivey?

Yeah Jai, I’ve been admitted for the May 2009 cohort.
Fall 2009 admissions cycle has already begun. Refer to the Ivey Admissions website for exact dates.

Certainly, one can’t go wrong by choosing Ivey, at least for the comprehensive success of its alumni. Refer to my post on why Ivey. However, you might want to consider the following:

1. Case Method – There’s no doubt that case method along with the cross enterprise curriculum will expose you to a wide array of management problems, interpreting the eagle’s eye view. However, some students are better off at a lecture-based method, where you tend to learn more by listening in class and burning back home assignments. I am more of a “learn by doing” kind of a guy and I would strongly advocate the case method. But that’s just me; choose the method that you believe is right for you.

2. Financing – Canadian banks don’t lend internationals that are not landed immigrants (i.e. those who don’t hold the permanent resident-ship status). Indian banks offer upto 20lakhs. You would easily need another 20-25 lakhs to finance the Ivey MBA.

3. Ivey is a fast paced programme. Unlike other 2-year programs, at Ivey you will have very little time decide on post MBA careers. I understand that job fairs and interview season starts as early as 4 months into the programme. But this is the case with any top 1-year MBA programme.

Unquestionably, Ivey is a top-school. Following links might be of some help to you.

Deep, I think TOEFL waivers are considered on a case-by-case basis. I remember the text-field in online online application form where you get to send requests to waive the requirement. Try sending an email to the MBA Admissions office. Response turnarounds are reasonably quick.

Demandez,
I am interested in Ivey as well, for the May '09 cohort. Read through your wonderful posts and helpful links.
Question: Did you defer your admission from previous year to the May 2009 cohort? First deadline for May '09 appears to be Sep' 01. If you applied this year, when did you apply and when did you get the final decision?

I was planning on completing my appliaction by Sep' 01 until I came across the post by Ms.Niki Healey on Ivey Admissions blog;
I am yet to finalize my essays; I believe that I have a strong profile, but want to be completely confident with my essays before I hit the submit button. I understand that Ivey has rolling admissions, and so if I submit by Sep' 15, the AdCom would consider my app. earlier than the Nov. 6 deadline application, right?
Also, planning to be a part of the 'First Class on Road' in September.

Hello Kishore.
Yes, I have a deferred admission from previous year. I’d applied to the class that starts Sep 2008. However, Ivey advised me to start in May 2009 for the following two reasons:
  • I might find things tough to find my dream job post MBA, with just 3 years of experience. Ivey believes that an additional 10 months of experience would put me in par with the class whose average work-ex is more than 5.
  • I indicated management consulting as my short-term career goal, post Ivey MBA. Technically, there’s no difference between both the cohorts (Spring/Fall); the curriculum for both is the same. But the recruiting cycles of major consulting firms and investment banks are strategically aligned with the May cohort (most 2-year MBAs graduate in April/May). Refer to Ivey Admissions Facebook page FAQ.

As far as I understand, Ivey’s admissions deadlines are not strict. They review applications on a rolling basis, as and when they are received. But they do recommend candidates to apply early, to be considered for available scholarship opportunities. I think these deadlines are only meant to furnish their waitlist policies and decisions. (You may want to email the admissions office to check on this)

Agreed, it’s best to complete your application yearly. But don’t do so if you are not completely confident. Am sure ‘First Class on the Road’ will provide you better insights about the school. But since you are at New York, I would strongly urge you to visit the school, if possible. Ivey does offer class visit awards to prospective students. Refer to Richard Ivey School of Business - MBA program for details.

Class Visit Dates for 2008:
  • Thursday, September 25, 2008
  • Thursday, October 30, 2008
  • Thursday, November 20, 2008

Hey Demandez,
Any other Canadian schools you applied? How is Queens in Kingston? Is it better than Ivey?
