Also if possible, could you provide a rough estimate on a) IB placements at Analyst vs Associate level b) Domestic vs international IB placements 2) I have been involved with many NGO activities, however i don't have certificates for most of these activities. Will my inability to provide certificates hamper my application? Thank you in advance for your help! Thanks & Regards, Ajay | Ajay, - Last year, eight I-Banks recruited from ISB. However, we cannot mention the names of the companies on the forum.
- 20% of finance jobs are from IB.
- Roles offered from Analyst to AVP.
- Instead of listing these activities under Awards & Activities, please mention your NGO work in the optional essay and also specify that you won’t be able to provide certificates for the same.

I have a couple of Qs which are specific to my background:
This is my career background:
--> BE in Comp Sci from University of Madras - 2004 with 90%, 100% in Maths and overall 2nd rank in college.
--> Masters in Software Engineering from Carnegie Mellon,USA - GPA 3.8/4
--> Work experience of 3 years with HTC, Siemens Research and Oracle.
--> Plus interests lie in blogging, extra curriculars, loads of volunteering work with multiple NGOs.
Given the above:
a. What are the options that one gets if she choses to switch sectors - say from Process Consulting (IT) to another sector such as Finance?
b. What kinds of consulting roles are offered post-ISB?
c. W.r.t General management, what are the roles offered?
d. Given the huge initial investment in terms of fees, what could be the % increase in ROI, post-ISB? Mod Edit: ISB, like all other b-schools, will prefer you achieve your highest GMAT score. They do not specifically state a particular score for a particular applicant based on her profile.
Again, I must thank you for your time to answer my query and help similar prospective students.
Thanks,
Shini Menon | Dear Shini,
Thank you for your patience. a) I am answering this question for people with engineering as background. Career switching from engineering background into finance should be no problem provided you have the basic ingredients. Corporate finance could be an interesting option. Career switching from engineering to finance analytics – will be a simpler task to achieve. The key skill sets required to get into finance analytics area are - Quant orientation
- Analytical skills
- Data analysis
Engineering to Investment Banking will be a bit tougher task to achieve. The key skills required are - Skill set discussed above and in addition
- Networking skills
- Very strong communication skills
- Leadership potential
- Willingness to travel
The entire possible career options discussed above requires all these skills. However, the range of requirement varies depending on the job/ role you aspire for. Please note that the demand for I-Bankers at any particular time is market driven. Keeping in mind the current global economic slowdown, the demand for I-Bankers this year will be affected. However, since its inception, the ISB has managed to place 25% of its batch in the finance sector every year. b) From Analyst to Principle/Lead Consultant. c) Management associate to Vice President. d) The ROI figure varies from person to person as it depends on a number of factors like company, industry, previous salary, role, academic and interview performance at ISB. Hello,
Hope this mail finds all the members in great spirit and health.
I am Pathik Jain, 22, and i have just finished my graduation from National Institute of Technology, Bhopal.
I will join Reliance Energy this august and I am prepared to pursue a MBA degree.
I have some questions for you sir:
1.Ideally, why should one go for an mba, for the only reason i see it is for a better exposure, better career, and evolution of mindset. I am not in love with any of the management subjects, yet i find myself desperate for the degree, maybe because of the greater role one gets after pursuing it. Please present before me a larger picture, if there is one?
2. I am an average student, with very high ambitions, with a dream to shape the future of this country. I always think of entering politics 15 years down the line, having acquired some position and capital. Am i taking the right path, as in looking for an MBA from ISB, thereafter a job, a start-up maybe, and then finally active politics, considering i may not get a great score in GMAT?
3. IIms have a two year management programme, your school has a one year programme, so how should one decide as to whcih one offers a better in-depth understanding and al round skills, and what actually is behind your course module? I know your global ranking, but rankings are temporary, internal framework is class <snip>
Moderator note - deleted question asking about preparation of GMAT.
I am also in doubt as to what sort of a profile should i seek so as to enter ISB two years later.
I have obatined 86% in 10th and 12th CBSE,
graduated with a CGPA of 8.35
Have an excellent college profile.
Please help me out....
Thanks & Regards
Pathik
