Re: It's back! -[2008] Ask ISB-Hyderabad: Admission Director answers your queries! - 14-07-2008, 02:44 PM

Hello

I have a question that is unique.

Post my Engineering, I joined the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun for training in order to join the Indian Army as a commissioned officer. During the training period, I was paid a monthly salary by the Indian Army and it was full time as well. Due to unfortunate incidents, I met with an injury and was declared "Unfit for service". Since then I have been working with one of the Big 4 auditing firms.

My question is, would my tenure at IMA (14 months) be counted as work experience or not? If yes, what are the details/proofs I would have to produce?

Thanks

Sairam

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Bharath, I will suggest that you give your GMAT test again and then apply in Cycle 2.

Mod Edit: Profile Evaluation Requests are not allowed on this thread. Please read the general instructions posted at the beginning of the thread.
  • Is B2B marketing a common profile among ISB aspirants?
  • Is Mtech degree (Industrial Engineering and Management) an advantage or a disadvantage? I am not using it directly in my present job.
  • In my present job profile I hardly have any chance to display the leadership potential. How do show that I have leadership potential to the Adcom.?
Thanks in advance .. looking foreword to your response..
loosecontrol,

Your queries are answered below pointwise:
  • Please elaborate on your first point.
  • No, it is not at all a disadvantage.
  • You can highlight your leadership skills through any social activity that you might have undertaken.

Mr Menon,

I was wondering as to what is the ISB Admissions opinion, if any, on the plethora of agencies offering essay/reco. editing services (creation services offered are obviously illegal, so wont ask that question).

I ask this, as I find these to be not ethically right and would not use them and was wondering if that would be an unfair disadvantage for people like me who do not take expert advice in such matters.

In short, if ISB does not allow these, is there some way it ensures that people not using these services are not unfairly dealt with?

Thanks,

Thank you for giving out time!

I am a reapplicant and had appplied in 2006 (when I wasn't called for interview also). I am on my way to apply this year again.
Brief Profile: 2 years in Manufacturing and 1+ year in a Renowned Management Consulting firm. (In total, 3+ years)
GMAT: 700
(I can make out that ADCOM has specifically mentioned that they are not going to do a profile check. But I thought it will in some way assist you in answering my query)
Query: I wish to apply in first round with my current profile. The only thing that I can improve right now is my GMAT score (which is close to ISB median score). For that, I have taken a date in September (end, after deadline of first round). We cannot assess how competitive the applicant pool is going to be this year, but I feel that my giving shot at first round looks quite apt.
Please advice on how should I go about applying in the first round with current score and submitting my latest one few days after the first deadline.

Thanks and Regards
We will not be accepting any new GMAT score once you have submitted your ISB application. You can either apply in cycle 1 with your old GMAT score or in cycle 2 with new GMAT score.

Thanks,
Forbidden_apple,

While we appreciate your concern, we have our own ways of finding whether the essays are written by the applicant or not and so is the case with the recommendations.

I took my first stake in a paper manufacturing startup when I was 16 and turned it around and in the past 10 years I have worked with companies in the areas of manufacturing, IT, paints, hotel and textile retail. I hold personal stakes in these companies and still continue to look for opportunities to buy undervalued companies in unlisted space. I don't have a college degree will ISB consider this as a special case, like some universities abroad do.

Thanks

Nikhil,

It is mandatory to have a bachelor’s degree to apply to the ISB.

Sairam,

Your experience at the IMA will be considered. You will need to provide a certificate from a competent authority (IMA) to that extent.

Thank you for the prompt reply. Actually, I had asked the same question to one Mrs. Rama devi of the Admissions team at ISB earlier. She told me that my stint at IMA will not be counted as work ex.

Could you please confirm the same?

Thanks

Sairam

Thank you for the prompt reply..

By B2B marketing i meant project marketing (for example for power projects / construction projects etc) or marketing for industrial products which different than FMCG marketing. I would like to know if B2B marketing is a common profile among ISB applicants? (% of such applicants might help)
