hey wizkid15...
GRE and CAT are both supposed to be the same kind of aptitude tests but as far as I am concerned they are poles apart... basically because of the following:

1. GRE doesnt have as many time constraints as does CAT...
I mean yes there are time pressures but it is nothing compared to CAT

2. RC's in GRE involve more reading between the lines whereas CAT RCs involve reading the passage completely to score heavily...

3. Wordlist completion guarantees success in GRE whereas it doesnt do so in CAT

4. The competition is higher in CAT as outta 1,27,000 applicatns abt 2000 get calls

5.The biggest diff as far as I know is the quant level.... GRE quant level is a basic level with a lot of people scoring 800/800 whereas quant is the toughest section in cat with people barely coming into double digits... out of 50

6. GRE has a writing test something CAT doesnt....

if i remember anymore will tell you buddy...

one last thing GRE prep actually helps you a little in your CAT prep.....

adios

IMHO, CAT quant is way higher than GRE and GRE english is a lil tougher in terms of analogies and vocab : I don't say RC 'coz as mentd above, GRE RC's are much more superficial and smaller than CAT RC's.

So the two preparations can overlap at very initial stages but as you progress, their techniques and strategies differ widely so I think as u increase ur level of prep, u'd hv to take them separately as two distinct examz.

thatz wot I think....wot do others hv 2 say?

all the best

I think you mean MS and MBA..or the like.

I have taken the GRE , but not the CAT.

IMO, Just prep. for one exam

The verbal can be quite a shocker given the adaptive nature of the GRE. I dont think you will find words like subpoena in CAT. obviously, some words are exclusive usage in the US.

So ya, some things are common, but i think you will be better off prepping according to the needs of each test.

Hope that helps

Sincerely
Aejaz

GRE prep helps a lot in CAT w.r.t verbal ...

the main diff is .. a high score in GRE doesnt guarantee anything ...
while a low score is not necessarily the end of the story..

in CAT ... anything below 95 % is ... end of story .. as far as the
top institutes are concerned ..

Also .. %tile is a very relative term .. and can be misleading ..

94%tile with 1.25 lakhs student ... is less than 93% with 1.25

so .... go in and give it ur best !!!

Change is Permanent ... Growth is Optional !!!

IMHO, preparing well for CAT will take care of the quant section on GRE. U’ll have to put in some extra effort in English for GRE…basically in the vocab area. So honest prep for CAT + extra effort@Vocab should do the trick for both the tests. Again, IMHO!!

PS-> all d best!
