Schools interested in candidates of age 30 and beyond? - 02-04-2008, 08:59 AM

Hi friends,
It's a common observation that Business schools all over the world are prefering younger candidates. Admission for aspirants who are in 30 - 35 years category with experience from 6 - 12 years is getting tougher. Actually such students are considered too old for an MBA and too young for an Executive MBA. What do you think is the best solution for such candidates?
Please also mention the schools, you think are interested (or consider actively) in such candidates in US, Europe and Asia.
I am sure a lot of candidates must have felt this way (or would be in the same boat). Hence any observations/feedback/comments in this regard are gratefully welocme.

Thanks and regards,
Ram

Posting it in http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/intern...ance-desk.html (Phoren B-school Assistance Desk) thread might give better responses.

Also, I would say even though admission of aspirants who are in 30 - 35 age group is getting tougher its not impossible. Its just how well you portray yourself. And also for this age group going for a 1 yr MBA will be more logical.

My 2 cents...

Hi, I am 32 and will apply to some B-schools this year. Actually I believe there is no such thing as "admission is getting tougher for older applicants." Just check out the many excellent programs around the world particularly suited for people like us: Ivey, IMD, INSEAD, Cranfield, Cambridge, IE, Oxford et al. In sum, most one year programs will happily admit guys aged 30+ provided they have distinctive credentials. Check out the students´average age of 2YP vs 1YP. It all makes sense; we have more experience (though not necessarily better, here is where your background will make the cut or not) and most of us are not willing to spend 2 years studying because we are well aware of opportunity costs. Those programs are better for younger candidates with less experience and in need for additional academic training. The market is so vast and varied that you will have a wealth of options available. Another important aspect to consider is how much does brand add to your resume. With more years of experience we are less inclined to rely on school´s brand because we have already proven many things to ourselves, our families and societies in general. Harvard, Stanford, UPenn and Chicago are all great names which will definitely open doors but perhaps this will be of greater help for younger guys. I also guarantee you that when we all reach our 40s-50s and are ready for senior posts, we will not be judged by the school we came from but rather for the results we achieved. If you are truly unique, highly competent and an achiever and are capable of clearly portraying that to adcoms many top b-schools around the world will be more than excited to offer you a place. It is you who will add value to their brand just as much as they will add theirs to your persona. Best regards
