PGPX IV - 2009-10: Application Process and Beyond - 17-03-2008, 02:08 AM

Hi Guys,

With PGPX-IV application form out on IIMA website, I thought of starting a new thread so as to provide a platform for this year's aspirants. I unsuccessfully tried last year so might be able to help by sharing my experience with first time applicants in this year's quest to IIMA-PGPX. Good luck to all.

Thanks.

Hi ,

Thanks for starting this thread.I was just looking out for a thread in succession to 08-09 thread and not finding one had posted my queries on to Arun's thread. But now I am doing it here.

I am an Mech Engg Graduate from Nagpur University.I have around 8 yrs of exp. out of which 5 are in Supply chain domain in Manufacturing industries and 3 are in IT domain (functional consultant SAP).Yet to take GMAT .
Currently in US (in Philly) for two mnths.Plan to take the test in June in Mumbai where I am based.
Acads okay
Extra curricular so so
I have travelled for short durations abroad to various countries for attending business meets or trainigns. Combined this wont be more than 6 mths.But still this gave me an exposure to working styles and cultures of people in Europe , South Asia, and US .
From your past experience Do you think my profile is still competitive. Any recomendations on how to highlight my mix of functional experience and IT experience.Would the international exposure be a negative as it is less than usaual norm.

I have a few questions abt the online registration process.
I have registered myself and was going thru the various requirements.
I did not see a place where they asked for any reco's.When are the reco's required and how are they submitted.
What is the usual process from you last year exp.
Step 1.Fill the form.
Step2.After short listeing candidates have to send essays.
Step3.Interview.
Step4.Final confirmation

Any input from any one formt the current batch would be most appreciated
thanks once again,

Hi primegem
My name is Prabhu and am one of the 'to-be' students of 2008-09 PGPX batch commencing in April'08. Let me try to answer your queries to the best of my knowledge (Answers in-line in Blue):

{Prabhu: I think it still is highly competitive. The sheer mix of functional and IT exposure gives you an edge, IMO}

Any recomendations on how to highlight my mix of functional experience and IT experience.
{Prabhu: Essays you write after you are shortlisted for interview will give you ample opportunity to highlight this}

Would the international exposure be a negative as it is less than usaual norm.
{Prabhu: My personal view is that international exposure is just one of the many things that a b-school looks for. As I see from my batch, there are people without any international exposure. But again it is pretty much profile specific and I cannot say whether it's a outright negative or not}

I have a few questions abt the online registration process.
I have registered myself and was going thru the various requirements.
I did not see a place where they asked for any reco's.When are the reco's required and how are they submitted.
{Prabhu: No recos required in the entire application process. Only when you finally accept the admission offer from IIMA, you are required to provide reference of 2-3 people. Even this is not the usual reco but just contact details of people who know you}

What is the usual process from you last year exp.
Step 1.Fill the form.
Step2.After short listeing candidates have to send essays.
Step3.Interview.
Step4.Final confirmation
{Prabhu: The above is correct}

Any input from any one formt the current batch would be most appreciated
thanks once again,
Any questions from fellow PG members, please post them here and I wil try to answer as best as I can.

Cheers
Prabhu.

Re: PGPX IV - 2009-10: Application Process and Beyond - 17-03-2008, 04:39 PM

Hi,

I am a chartered accountant by profession. I have a GMAT score of 740/5.0 but an experience of 4.5 years as on April 09. I have been working in analytical profiles - MIS / Planning / Management reports / etc since the start of my career. i have experience of both - division level and corporate level. Currently working closely with CFO. I have worked in two companies (both well known brands in India in steel and pharma sectors).

Accads - First class always.

Extra curriculars - Black belt shito ryu karate. Highly active in Dramatics through out the school and college life. Did some social work in college.
recently completed level 1 french. currently pursuing level 2

I am aware of the Loop hole in my profile - only 4.5 years. IIM A site talks about age restriction but does not talk about experience restriction like IIM C and IIM L talks about. I know the average experience is 7 years but i also see that there are not many CA's in batch 1 and 2 (actually there is only 1 in Batch 1).

now 4.5 years is very close to 5 years and to make my experience 5 years i will have to wait another year. Is anyone aware of any person who has made it to IIM A PGPX with less than 5 years experience.

I would be gratefully if anyone could comment on my profile.

Thanks in Advance

Vineet,

Your profile no doubt is impressive but in a PGPX program where average work ex is 10 years.. 4.5 years is really on the borderline. But I would say that go ahead and apply as batch size is almost double this year, so with your other strong credentials you stand a good chance of getting shortlisted.

Thanks.
