Hi Anshul,

Thanks for this gr8 initiative. I hope you would be able to answer some of the doubts I had abt applications. I'll start by putting up my profile.

Acads: X - 87.7%
XII - 83.7 %
Graduation - BE(Electronics), Mumbai Univ, 66 %

GMAT - 710 given a week back.

Work Experience:
2 yrs 3 months in TCS involved in the largest core banking implementation in Asia with State Bank of India.
Following this I shifted to ANZ(Australia and New Zealand) Banking group, ranked 50 in the world among top banks, at a higher grade where I've been working for the past 8 months again in core banking implementation throughout ANZ in Asia Pacific.

Extra Curriculars - Decent extracurriculars in school and college organising events. No extracurriculars while at TCS, but in the current organisation im involved in several initiatives such as Career Development center for my team of 60 odd people and also in an organisation wide software change management compliance committee.

Now my questions to you:

1. I would like to go into Finance. Basically in my 3 yrs of experience, I have worked on a wide variety of banking domains like Loans, Deposits, Credit Risks, SWIFT, FOREX etc. even though my knowledge is basically in converting business rules to code. But im fascinated with retail banking and would like to continue in this. I think this justifies my choice of a shift from IT to Finance. Your take on this?

2. I'd like to know a reliable site from where to research colleges for finance. Many surveys give different rankings. Would it be okay to go by the overall rankings or shud i go for specific finance rankings.

3. Another point is regarding the costs involved. Most of the US colleges would involve costs upto $80K in tuition costs alone. As far as I know Indian banks give only upto a maximum of Rs. 20L. So how do i make up the gap in case there are no scholarships? Would I then have to solely depend on parents' savings then?

I hope these questions are not too much for you to answer. Once again thanks in advance for answering.

Regards,
Anish.

The US MBA including tuition + living can cost between US $ 80K to 120 K (depending on the school): regarding the cost of MBA, you have the following options:

1) Entrance Scholarship/fellowship from the university (very rare from the top 10 US MBA, but better chance with the top 25-50 US MBA schools)

2) Loan from Indian bank (20 lakh) + personal/parent's savings (30 lakh)

3) Loan from US bank (you will get a full loan of tuition + living), but you will need a US citizen/green card holder as co-signer. The Paras foundation in India will also offer the loan thru a US bank, but again, you need a US citizen/green card holder as co-signer (NO WAY around this)

4) If you get into the top 10-15 US MBA schools, almost all of them will give you a NO co-signer loan to cover tuition (and in some instances, living too). Basically, the University 'acts' as the co-signer in this case.

5) If you are in the US, and have a good credit history, and bank account for 3 years, you can get a loan through the Access foundation, even if you are not a US citizen. But the interest rates tend to be high.

If you want to research about universities, there is no easy one-stop-website. You will have to go through this forum, and use other ranking guides as business week, WSJ, financial times. However, plz take any ranking with a grain of salt.

good luck

(by July end)...should get around 720-730..... extra curricular during college.......... failry good..... Academic track record....... decent......( 7.74 in B,Tech) ... during school have represented UP state in national Level Maths olympiad... Have an internationl pulbication in scienceDirect.com...tried my hands on CFA level 1... but really badly screwed up the exam ......... :unhappy:... internatiol exposure..... ??? not much......... just 5 week of offical visit to the US ( MA) ...and as far as recos are concered........ expect to get really good once from my manager ....... :happy:. but community servide.......... Lets look at your schools. I would suggest you the following,

  • Duke
  • UCLA
  • UC Berkeley
  • USC Marshall
  • UT Austin
  • UNC – I am attending UNC this fall, so I can say it’s a good school
  • Michigan State
  • Indiana Bloomington
Please post your profile so that I can suggest better matching schools.

@ankit

1) Wharton, Chicago, NYU, Stanford, MIT, UCLA,UC Berkeley, Kellogg.

2) I wouldnt rule out top 10, but I would keep them as "stretch" schools.

3) No idea about those

4)

Stretch

1. UCLA
2. Kellogg

Realistic

1. Cornell
2. CMU Tepper
3. UT Austin

Safety

1. Rochester
2. Boston College
3. UW Madison

@Anish

1) that sounds pretty good.. make sure u write this in yr essays

2) Us news, Business week. Go for the school that matches what you need rather than just ranked ones.

3) Many schools proovide 100% loans - chicago, columbia, cornell, UNC, Darden...

@tarang

ISB, dont know about other schools that accept GMAT in India.

@sid

Post your post MBA goals so I can advice you on schools.

@sushant

I would rate Boston then NC then Texas. Tepper's location in great, haflway between chicago and nyc. I would stick to the schools I listed before.
