Re: ISB 2009 Aspirants - 11-07-2008, 11:03 AM

Dear Giri and Badri,

I too have a profile check sort of question but I need some more insights than only profile suitability. So here goes about me:

10th – 86 %
12th - 78.6 %
BTech (H) and Mtech (Dual Degree) from IIT- 7.7 / 10 (CGPA)
GMAT – 730 (50,38 )& AWA – 6.0
Work Exp. - ~ 4 years by April 2009 (2.5 years at L&T and rest at a MNC as a Marketing Engineer (B2B Marketing))

Other Certificates -
  • NTSE
  • 18th rank holder in state level science quiz competition
  • Qualified Project Management Professional Level D Certification by International Project Management Association
Extra Curricular - Not much after college… was a part of organising committee for annual fest for the college, was part of professional theatre group in college, Participated in NCC and did some volunteering for Red Cross Society .. But I don’t have any proofs for them.

Please comment on my profile and the areas which you think need to be highlighted more in the essays. Now I have some specific questions:
  • Is B2B marketing a common profile among ISB aspirants?
  • Is Mtech degree (Industrial Engineering and Management) an advantage or a disadvantage? I am not using it directly in my present job.
  • In my present job profile I hardly have any chance to display the leadership potential. How do show that I have leadership potential to the Adcom.?
  • Will a recent involvement in some extra curricular activity be considered a desperate attempt to add spice to the profile?
Thanks in advance .. looking foreword to your response..

Re: ISB 2009 Aspirants - 14-07-2008, 04:36 PM

Hi all,

I had a question regarding one of the ISB essays :

"You have been appointed to head the team to build a dam across the River Zumba. Success in this project is critical for your company and would earn you a promotion. Failure would mean that your company would be bankrupt and will take along with it, its investors and its employees. Building a dam across the river would result in deforestation of a portion of the rainforests and would mean relocation of the tribals and destabilization of wild life at Zumba. There is resistance from environmental groups against your project. You are meeting the head of the resistance movement in one hour wherein you would have to explain your decision. Describe what you would do and why? (You will be evaluated on the creativity and practicality of your solution)."

Could someone please clarify what is expected out of this essay? :dontgeti: Does it mean what all actions I would take in that 1 hour of time as homework to prepare for the meeting ? Or does it only ask for the final decision that I would take - whether to build the dam or not ?

Thanks a tonne !

Hi all,
Is applying in cycle 2 of ISB disadvantageous over applying in cycle 1.
If anybody could answer that, it would be really great.
Thanks so much

Hitesh,

There is no data or analysis to suggest this, but everyone maintains that it is better to apply in cycle 1. IMHO apply only when you are ready, be it first or second round.

I too am applying in R2, because i thought i will not be ready with my GMAT scores and essays by R1.

Cheers !!

I am skiping your profile check questions...but for others find my replies inline...

Please guide me on this also:-

- I Havn't given my Gmat.
Getting a decent GMAT score is the first challenge if you are looking at ISB 09 admissions. Based on your confidence in getting a decent gmat score book your exam seat and give the GMAT at the earliest.

- Please tell me the right time to give my GMAT... if i want to get admission in 2009 Batch of ISB.
Deadline for R1 admissions is 15th Sep and R2 is Dec1. The answer to your question totally depends on your preparation for GMAT. If you think you can get a decent score and get ready with your essays before R1 deadline go for it. Or else like me plan for R2.

- please put some light on the application process of ISB.
Starting point is having a decent GMAt score. Then application essays, your work ex, recommendations, acads, and extra curricular activities are looked upon. ISB looks at your profile holistically with all the above criteria contributing. Last one is the interview; you will be called for that only if you put in a decent application.

- please put some light on the GMAT Score required for standing a chance in ISB
ISB says that there is no official cutoff for getting short listed, but people who got admissions in the last couple of years say that 700+ gives you a decent chance of getting a call provided you put in a decent application. Obviously higher the gmat score better it is, but minimum should be 700.

- Please help me out...n gimme whatever info you can...!!!

Cheers !!
