Preparing for your ISB interview - 29-12-2008, 09:23 PM

Dear Puys,

Now that some of you have started receiving the interview calls, thought I would write a detailed mail to help R2 aspirants.

Here are few steps to do justice to yourself while preparing for your interview.

STEP 1)

1) Read through your application in great detail. Try to pick up a) all the good things in the application b) All the crazy things in the application. Now prepare questions on these two aspects.

2) Read your ECs, and try to prepare a few likely questions.

3) Read your Essays and identify possible questions.

4) Now go to generic questions a) Why MBA b) Why ISB c) Why not something else d) Why now e) What after MBA? (The answer for all these questions is simple - the strong reason why you really want to spend 20 lakhs; If you are not clear about this you are wasting your time and money!!!!!!!!!!!!

STEP - 2)

Write, I repeat write answers to each of them. Leave them for the next day. read through them......... you might find the answers crap. If you havenot then you are on the right track.

STEP - 3)

Look into a mirror and ask these questions to yourself and ANSWER the questions. You will start understanding your body language. Ask yourself possible followup questions based on your answers.

STEP - 4)

a) Get a few statistics right. The population of INDIA is ABOUT 110 crores. 30% is Middle class, which is equal to the population of USA;

b) Know the population of the state you are born or you live in; (If some estimation question is given for say Karnataka, you can be honest and say could I do it for Haryana, as you might be more comfortable with Haryana's demographics)

c) If asked some estimation questions - say for a play station (target the top end schools and take a guestimate that about 500 - 2000 per school / per year and multiply with 10 years or 10+2 years or 10+2+3 years of students.

If the question is for some lifestyle product for a wife, say for Bangalore, start by guesstimating Bangalore has ABOUT 5 lakh software engineers add another 2 lakhs from the traditional industry and now you have a base of 7 lakhs and of which 20 % would be the people for the product. It could be AC or i10 car or so on. But if it is for a new BIke your 5 lakh Software Engineers would become 5 lakhs Govt + Indutrial employees and 1 lakh students. Once you develop these kind of thoughts in your mind, you can crack anything.

Now prepare a few questions like these relevant to your field and comeup with answers. Once you are clear with the process you can crack any question.

STEP 5)

Learn a few things that are happening in the market. Donot try to learn about things which you have no idea. I screwed my IIM interview 10 years back trying to do the same. Tried to talk about balance sheets being an Engineer.

STEP -6)

Come out with a list for - what are the kind of questions you donot want to give detailed answers. You could politely say you are not the expert in the subject. It is best to KNOW what you DONOT KNOW. It helps you.

STEP -7)

Know the real person inside you. The ISB admission process is all about understanding the real person in you. So however hard you try, you cannot hide the real person inside you. Just be what you are and most important, know who you really are. Then present the person you are. Offcourse they are not looking at a person who wants to be a business analyst only. The person they are looking at is "what he or she aspires to be in life" So just present that.

Just to give you a simple solution,

My answer to all of the above questions was a simple answer -

"Create a Billion Dollar Company"

Now all the possible questions and answers were around this and pretty easy. Was asked everything - why second MBA, why not Babson, Billion dollar or billion rupee, all my carrer shifts meant for this single objective. Came out of a succesful interview in 17 minutes.

LAST STEP)

If you think this mail is useful, re-read the mail. It will help you.

All the best.

Great Job Ram. I think it is a very comprehensive list. I would just like to add one more step (based on my interview exp.).

Additional Step:

Be prepared for weird questions. For e.g. What if you were the CEO of x company..I know it might be difficult to cover all the questions in this category, but at least be prepared how exactly you will react if such a scenario comes.
