I admit, got a little carried away with the discussion. What you say is essentially correct - as long as you are presentable, it should be fine. However, a blazer still conveys more intent, seriousness and formality - my final closing comment. Given the choice, I'd still wear it, whether it impacts my chances or not.

Of course, you can justify the fact that wearing a shirt does not make you any less worthy of admission, but the question is - would you want to spend the interview time arguing about this pointless topic ?
suit is strongly advised. it oozes professionalism. you can talk about changing workplace, and steve jobs, and bill gates going to work in jeans, and all....but guess what? these ppl have already earned their stripes, we have yet to. oh sure, once u r in their shoes, u can go to work topless in boxers and it'll become a fad, u'll be a youth icon; but not till then. if among 12 candidates, i m in shirt & tie, that might differentiate me from others, but that's not the kind of negative differentiation i m looking for! believe me, when u r chatting up with other candidates awaiting ur turn, u can't help, but feel that, they look like business honchos and u look like a door-to-door salesman in shirt and tie. v expect professionalism from ISB, other B-schools, don't we? is it too much to pay them back in the same manner? they might be modest and say that dresscode doesn't matter, but shouldn't v at least LOOK like business leaders before becoming ones? the last thing u want is thinking about defending ur no-suit-wear to the Adcom when u can use those invaluable minutes telling ur unique story to the adcom and convincing them of ur USP. (now, if u don't have a compelling, exciting story to tell, i guess u can skip the suit and then defend ur decision for a while to mask ur lack of USP...)

p.s. i know Gandhiji is one of the greatest leaders of all, and yes, he did not wear a suit. but, then again, he had earned his stripes (he cud meet the Queens and Dukes of Europe clad in dhoti and chaddar and didn't look like a sorry Indian, but a proud Indian)! Can any one of us claim to be so? well then, that's that...

Suit / blazer /tie / boxer whatever is the dress does make a difference? Guys those of you who think suit is not wanted, you might have to experience negative looks at your interview from your fellow aspirants. You then get into a defensive/negative thought. If at all the interviewer asks you reason for not wearing a suit? you might start with a defensive / negative frame of mind.

If you think you are fine with the negative looks of others and your own opening negative words, you should go ahead with whatever dress you want to wear.

Just for your info, I actually SNUBBED the person who was interviewing me and got in!!!!!!!!! But I had my profile and work ex to say what I said.

Suit or no suit, it doesnot matter to us now. But it may matter to you. So donot waste time in pondering over these rudimentary issues. ISB building or the hotels at which they interview are centrally air conditioned. The debate of Indian Climate might not be all that relevant. ATB.

Agree with MRC and nigam. I would like to add..

I had earlier once initiated this debate.. by posing the same question. Felt, I will find myself uncomfortable in a Suit. But, then good sense prevailed and actually got myself a brand new suit!!!

****************
Qn is.. Wouldn't you yourself feel out of place (psychologically) when u see that you are the odd man out ?? It could for all you know, add to the pressure at the key moment. It's not worth the risk.

People might argue that, they are not so comfortable in a suit.. I strongly feel, that the possible mental discomfort because of not going in a suit could be much more difficult to handle....

****************
For those, who think, they can project themselves better by not wearing a suit... or those who think that the resulting discussion could be turned to your advantage...

"What if.... the panel doesn't bring that point up and doesn't give you a chance to justify.. but just takes a note of it!!!"

In one of the posts earlier, I had read that in an IIMA interview, one of the panel members told the candidate that they were expecting him to be more appropritaely dressed. (This happenned at the end of the interview.. when the candidate was about to leave.. no opportunity to justify himself)

And even if the panel brings it up and gives u an opportunity to justify.. it might not be optimal. I am sure all of us will surely have better things to discuss in the interview.

****************

To sum it up, its not worth the risk.

Gandhi used to wear a suit when he was practicing. It was much later that he gave it up. The rsn worked for him too, just enuf clothes to cover the essentials- Mebbe someone can quote him to get away Me thinks a blazer was the moot point here, for everyone will wear formals undoutably. Definitely a complication specially if one has to travel to a diff city. in teh end it should boil down to this - blzer or no blazer, if u r convinced of an action, u should be ok to convince someone else.

query - frm the point of view of an applicant with 5+ yrs exp, how important are school/coll certis and marks? The marks are not bad, but not the type one would frame on the wall and take extreme pride in. As in, will a good num of work related certis cover for the lack of those during the academic years?

@aspireisb....last year the lowest gmat score was 580 for a final admit-- its given in the brochure..( i guess there could be 1 candidate), this year as far as my knowledge goes 620 is where they sent a call..for i/v in R1.my knowledge is limited only to PG. R1 admits would be able to enlighten u more on this
