Can any one please help me find whether I can get an admit in ISB. What are the things I need to improve to make my profile look good.
Guys, I see that a lot of what I write is becoming redundant these days. Everyone already seems to know the strong points and weak points of his application. I would not expect anything lesser from ISB aspirants. Kudos.

Aki,
I am not able to suggest anything to improve on your profile. Your great extra currs more than make up for the lack of NGO activities and international work ex. And you seem to have good acads and GMAT score. Just concentrate on the diversity factor (in fact all IT pple, especially guys, need to) and you should be fine.

All the best.

Pessi,
I am not sure if ISB will consider Masters degree as a surrogate for full time work ex. This is my take though and I can be wrong. Can anyone confirm?

However, you can project your masters in your favor as a diversity factor.

darshan239,
Like you have said, a 700+ score is indeed a plus on your application. However, remember that people have got admits (yes admits) with scores in the mid 600s. What matters is your entire package.

Btw, which practice tests did you try? I have heard that some tests like Kaplan are tougher than the actual GMAT itself, so take that into account as well.

ATB.

My 2 cents worth to all people wondering what score you must achieve in your GMAT and whether your scores are sufficient:

There is no minimum GMAT score for a particular profile which will guaratee admission or an interview call. The more the better, but all the same, a lesser score does not mean rejection straight away.

That said, I have heard that colleges generally expect slightly higher scores from indian students as we tend be good in math.

Re: ISB 2009 Aspirants - 08-03-2008, 05:03 PM

Hi,

Before visitng this thread, I was thinking of applying to ISB this year. But after reading through the thread,Im confused over whether I should or I shouldnt.

First of all a brief intro about myself.

Acads:

X: 88.4 % (CBSE)(2000)
XII: 83.4% (CBSE)(2002)
B.TECH(2003-2007): 80.1% , from IP Univ,New Delhi in Information Technology

Work ex:

Worked for an MLM for an year and half during college studies. I know its not counted as work ex, but it did gave me a lot of exposure to marketing stuff.

4months(JUL'07-'OCT07): Worked with a start up organisation. In the MARKETING deptt as a trainee

Nov'07-Current: Wrking with ICICI bank as assistant manager in Global markets grp which deals with FOREX dealing n hedging.

Have a keen intrest in stock markets & have been trading for some years now. Plan to switch over if any oppurtunity like that comes by.

Extra cirruculars:
Served my school as Head Boy during class 12th and vice head boy in class 11th.
Active organiser of many events during college.
Entrepreneur spirit: CO-founder of a Business club in our engg college(3rd year). Lead the club to organise a Business fest in our college during final year.
Technical achvmnts: presented technical papers at IITs & won.
(Certificates for all above present)
Other un certified extra currs too.

Social Work: educated two underprivlgd minors in terms of providing them computer education. This was a part of MLM wrk dat i joined, but I did it myself. That was like 4 years back. Nothing special since then.

GMAT: not yet taken or even not yet registered for.

My question to u all is that whether I should apply this year or not? At the starting of April 2009, i would be having a little under 2 years of cummulative work ex.My goals for doing MBA are clear in terms of entrepreneurship...Do I stand ne chance of being considered? people here have talked about they being rejected even after a good gmat scores.

please advise

Hi sabthagiri,

Thanks a lot for ur reply.

Just had one more query.
I have strong passion for sports and my long term plan is to raise Indian players in all sports to International standards. But i am not able to develop a strong link between my passion and my IT background.
Can you give some suggestions on this?
Will my long term plan make my profile different from others applying to university?

Yes, you need to prepare for that as there is a very good chance that the adcom may ask you to explain the choice of your career given your long term goals. You will be the best person to explain the choices that you have made. But if you feel that the reasons which made you choose IT might not be "presentable" to the adcom, then you need to think of other reasons. You may say that you wanted to earn substantial wealth before starting your own sports academy or something. Even this is open to questions. For instance, you can again be asked as to why you never considered joining some sport related company.

Disclaimer:
To all people trying to explain their choices that you have made and that you want to make:
Please do a lot of introspection and come up with your own (if possible genuine) answers (@Aki No offense meant). For one, if you have to convince the adcom, you will have to be convinced of the reasons to begin with. And so it is likely that you will be convinced of your own answers, and consequentially have an easier time convincing the adcom, than of others'. At the end of the day, it is always better to be genuine than to make things up cause you might end up in serious bad light if the adcom probes too much.

As to whether your career goals can contribute to the diversity, I have quoted the ISB wesite below:
"Diversity
The ISB believes that student diversity is a very important element of an international education. Diversity can be in the form of educational background, work experience, nationality or personal experiences and goals. Applicants are encouraged to describe your backgrounds and provide details about how you can contribute to the student community."

Hope this helped.

Ankit,
This year there was a minimum requirement of 2 years full time work experience. And people are saying that they might increase it the next year given the FT ranking this year. There is no official word on this though. I know of a person who applied to ISB this year and has been offered admission (deferred) inspite of having less than the minimum requirement of 2 years of work exp. But that said, I think she has one hell of a profile and must have wrote really good essays and must have got very good recos.

The point I am trying to make is, ISB has offered deferred admission to candidates with really exceptional profiles and applications. So if you are really very confident about your candidature, please go ahead and apply. Otherwise, it will be wise to wait for a year or two. For one, if you apply and get dinged, you will have the added challege of proving that you have improved your profile the next time you apply. (It is not impossible though. I myself am a reapplicant ). ATB.
