Admission Offer Made:
Yes – Deferred offer for the academic year 2010-11

Congratulations! You have been offered admission to the academic year 2010-11 commencing in April 2010. We regret that we were unable to offer you a seat for the academic year 2009-10. Please check your email for details of the deferred admission offer.

: : I don't think I've read about anyone getting a Deferred admit till now on this forum (I've been following it religiously). If there is anyone on this forum, or anyone who people on this forum know or have heard of, please let me know. I'd like to get in touch.

: Thanks a lot for the wishes to all the eligible people here. Congratulations to those who have made it, Best wishes to those who haven't. There are definitely a lot of highly eligible, mature and highly deserving people who haven't made it. I hope there is something better in store for those.

: I don't know how good or bad this is. To the seniors/ISB students/alumnus/adcom members/other people with experience, I'd like to know what are the avenues where I can make the best of this. For example, should I aim to change my job to a different profile. Should I do some specific certifications. Does ISB placement cell help deferred admits like me in the 18 months we have to pass before joining? I'd like everybody's help with this.

:new_ukliam2:: Although I'm not entirely jumping with joy, which would have been the case had I been accepted for this year, I kind of think that well, this is a blessing in disguise, I can probably make the most of my ISB experience now that I know I have 18 months to prepare for it.

: I hope to be active in this forum the this year and the next year as well, and help all those applying in R2 this year, or for MY CLASS - ISB CLASS OF 2011

: My Profile :

10th : 87%, NTSE scholar
12th : I don't want to tell (some disaster)

Graduation : IIT Madras class of 2007, Btech in Biotechnology, 7.74 CGPA. 1 Conference paper, Foreign Summer intern.

Total workexp : 16 months, IT Consulting (No International exp) --I think this is what finally led to the 'Deferred' thing.

GMAT : 760 (QA 50  , VA : 44), AWA 6/6

Extra Curriculars : Decent (Lots of dramatics, debates and extempores, won a geography quiz at national level, some sports as well)

Essays : Totally self written, did not take help from any agency, just asked a close friend to review it.

Social work : Floated an NGO with friends, did some real good work there, was questioned about it in detail and the panel was really interested, I think they saw that it was not fake but real experience.

Interview : I'd rate it as good. Although it was my first interview so I don't have any benchmark to compare it with, but the panel was very friendly, it was a conversational interview. The usual questions, Why MBA, why ISB, Why now, post MBA goals, some questions regarding my profession. Have posted the interview in detail, on my post dated 15th September.

My MBA Sob (now not so Sob) Story : Was always good in Mock Cats, used to consistently be in top 10 in Time in 2006, and in CL in 2007-2008. But always messed the verbal section in CAT somehow. got only 4/100 in cat 2007. Have been getting 99+ percentile overall last 2 years, but don't clear sectional cut off for verbal :-x. Took GMAT after flunking last cat, and did well. Had thought will apply Next year anyway, but randomly applied to ISB although I knew I did not fulfill the minimum workex criterion. Got an interview call and was astounded. Finally all's well that ends well I guess. CAT was good too this time, am expecting interview calls from IIM's, but now I don't think I need them. Will of course take further advice on IIM (PGPM) vs ISB , if I get IIM final calls at all (not on threads, as i know it is discouraged as it turns into a flaming match), but in person. I would like to advice all those who have got rejects this year, to consider this piece of advice, coz its true. 'All good things come to those who wait. Never give up. If you don't succeed, try try again'. It has worked for me, finally, after failures and rejections, I have got something to cheer about. I hope and pray, and in fact, am sure, that it would work for you too :rockedov:.

Finally, this smiley, which I always wanted to make on all those CAT discussion forums, but could not :

Thanks. God bless u all!
u have an excellent profile , i think the reason for deffered admission is low work ex, i think a case of deffered admsn happened last yr as well , check CO2009 thread .

They basically want u to have at least 2 yrs or more work ex before u join, bt since u have such an awesome profile apart from this...they want you to join the next batch.

Congratulations nonetheless!

Re: ISB 2009 Aspirants - 21-11-2008, 06:12 PM

Hi All,

Its my first post on Pagal Guy. I had planned to post it today irrespective of my result. Was about to do it a few hours ago till Mr.Sam wrote some stupid stuff which embarrassed me more than anything else (as am an IITian myself). However I assure, that there can one rotten apple, but not all apples are rotten, and this is not a case where the rot spreads along. I would like everyone to know my experience, as it could be of some use I believe.

My profile, well I am not much of a giver of such info, but then since everyone has been following that in a ritualistic manner, here it goes -

Acads - In the high 80 percentages in school and +2
Graduated from IIT, B.Tech.
CGPA - 7.64
GMAT - 710/5 (Not earth shattering)
Professional exp - 2 years 6 months (and counting ...) as a SE in a well-known organization in Bangalore.

Extra-Curriculars -- Strong, was the head boy at school, went on to become Placement Secy. and was a key figure in organization of many events at college. The enthu went on even after I joined the corporate world, and have won a key award 2 months ago at my place.
Strong communcation abilities, won awards in debates and have delivered speeches on topics of my interest.
Have written articles in newsletters at various stages, and had started off penning a novel, but then the laziness in me took over.

International Exposure - Zilch.

My interview experiences -

Panel had 3 members, a lady from adcom and two men. One of the guys was an alum.

I bet they didn’t go through my application before-hand completely.

Questions

1). Just walk us through your resume
Blah blah blah .. did this did that …
I did my schooling in Hyderabad … went to IIT and did my graduation .. was the placement secy. Have been with XXX for 2 years now .. etc.

2).What was your biggest achievement in your life ?
Placement Secretary , Awards at school … etc .etc.

(woman dozed off at this point, wonder why, my voice is quite commanding, mebbe it was a deliberate ploy to see my reaction, I didn’t bother much )

3). If you were given an opportunity to wind back the clock by 10-20 years, then what would you like to change ?
Mebbe concentrate more on my passions – cricket for example … blah blah

4). We believe that you have very less job experience – why do you think you are ideal to be selected in ISB.
Spoke abt the fact that even though I am less experienced in terms of the years I have spent, I believe that I am good at my approach towards management. Also that I want to become an entrepreneur.

5). Entrepreneur –then why MBA?
Spoke to them that I believe to have some strong fundamentals before I jump in the bandwagon and that I have seen Business plans etc. (slip)

6). Assume that it’s a event management company ? Convince us that it is right – got confused with this question – I thought they wanted me to sell an event to them as a sponsor, so started writing about how the costs are, etc. – Big blunder though the matter was perfect.

They then corrected me – they saw me doing the calculations but didn’t stop (the alum something on a paper and showed it to the other chap – donno what but I felt sick). I said I would then want to give another shot and show them a business plan … did that though I believe they spent quite some time on that, so moved away from the topic soon .. just gave an ear to how I went abt with the plan.

Plan – wrote down the product that I plan to sell … and then went to the market segmentation that I have planned – for children, adults – varying plans etc. – they liked the answer but it was more of lets get a move on by that time.

Why ISB ? Coz at ISB we insist on greater job experience – spoke to them abt the will to do a MBA in Asia .. rather than in US where the economy has saturated over the past decade. Told them that ISB is a fab institute in Asia and given the fact that it has a good course curriculum – it was an automatic choice. Also explained them my idea of B-Schools catering to a particular region and that I wanted to work in Asia where the economy is on a rapid growth for the past few years.

We still feel that you have lesser job experience. So what would you get to the table – I spoke abt fresher ideas etc. They wanted to know what fresher ideas am I speaking abt. I told them abt the diversity the pool would have. A 2 year job exp guy wouldn’t think abt the same way that a 8 year job exp guy wud .. so on …

Any final questions – Asked them two though not too interesting I believe.. the lady answered one

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I do feel dejected that I got a reject, but the exercise till date has been a marvellous experience. The best part was that as soon as I came out of the interview, I could question myself if I was ready for the path. One may assume that I was overawed by the situation, but the person that I am, I know that it wasn't the case. I thank ISB as they have helped me realise that I still need to hone my skills. I wouldn't blame luck, existence of invisible factors must be left out. I would though blame my preparation for the event, and maybe my immaturity to have dived into something before I actually understood what it is all about.

I hope that all those who got through aren't in the same boat as I am. I am happy in one sense that I have been rejected, as that gives me an opportunity to look back and understand my shortcomings at the moment.

Before I sign off, I whole-heartedly want to congratulate all those who have got an admit. I hope that our lines would cross at some point, and preferably with one of you on the interview panel that I might face at some later point

Further Information on Deferred admits is that, I found out from the Adcom that only 2 candidates have been offered Deferred admits in R1.

Now its gonna be a tough thing trying to find the other one :-x, unless of course, he/she happens to be a Puy.

Hi MeraNumberAyega...first of all congratulations on your achievement..
There was one other person from last year who had <2 yrs. of experience and had a deferred offer for this year. His posts are definitely on this thread, and must be in 100-200 page range. I think he said he is going to join this year.

MBA Pre-Course Study - 21-11-2008, 09:16 PM

Hi Folks,

Now that a lot of guys are itching to get a headstart on the MBA journey. The below links might be good for rank beginners (like me!)

You dont have to buy any expensive books (yet!), but can start off on the basics using a lot of free open courseware published by Ivy League Univs.
