Hi All,

Had a chance to have a chat with an ISB admit! He has shared a lot of tips regarding GMAT and app process.

Thought, it would be helpful to you!

You would have competition not from Engineers and CA's but from people with similar background as yours. In what way are you diverse than others of similar background is what matters.

Hello Guys/ Gals,
I'm also an ISB'09 aspirant..
@ Simz,Sabthagiri , u guys r doin a gr8 job...kudos to u!!!
Here goes my profile:-
10th marks- 81% (M.S Board)
12th Marks -93% (-do-)
B.E Elect - 84% (Gold Medalist frm NIT Nagpur)
Mtech (frm IIT Kgp)- 9.1 cgpa (However thats only for the first yr)
W.E - 4 yrs approx (will be 5 by '09)
1 yr in L&T as design engr
rest in NTPC as a Power Plant engr.
Extra currics- Good during school days (drawing , elocution )
Almost none during college...
Never have been into any sorta community service...
Will be Taking GMAT in June...expecting a score of 700+

I've certain doubts and wud be happy to receive comments frm ne1
1) Actually after completion of my 1st yr mtech , i took a course extension of 5 yrs and joined NTPC..However on joining NTPC i had to sign a bond which didn't allow me to take a study leave during the bond period..Because of which i was unable to complete my PG. Will this hav an adverse effect on my chances of selection. (i was dept 2nd when i left mtech)
2) Will a lack of extra currics during college, affect my profile that badly?
I'm currently learning german and Jap...but dunno whether such things help.
3) Being in a PSU and working as a power plant engr, the job profile doesn't leave much scope for demonstration of leadership skills...how to tackle this issue in the essays and interview?
I desperately seek comments from u @ Simz and Sabthagiri...
Sorry for the long n boring post.
Cheers
Rohit

4 Years work ex with IBM and Microsoft , NIT grad-->ISB chances ?? - 08-04-2008, 12:01 PM

I have close to 4 years of work ex as a s/w eng with IBM and Microsoft. Had a fairly good acad track record.

10th : 88%
12th : 92.3%
Grad : 75.1% (NIT Bhopal, ECE)

Not much in to extra curriculars , but for the last 3 years I have been a successful webmaster with 4 websites running and generating good business.

Never thought of GMAT until now, hence totally clueless about my prospects of getting in to ISB.

What are the odds in favour of getting in to ISB with a score around 700 ?

thanks
Siva

Re: ISB 2009 Aspirants - 08-04-2008, 02:42 PM

rohit,

I feel your profile is very good. Here are the answers to your Questions

1. I do not think it should affect your chances. Just explain to them why you left the degree and how working in NTPC fitted better in your Long term goal.

2. Lack of activities does hurt your application, but the good news is that you have a lot of time in hand before the next session begins. So use this time to get involved in some activity, and you should be fine.

3. B schools look for leadership in every applicant. I am sure at your work place there would have been a few leadership activities. Just think hard and you should come up with something. Try looking for examples, even the ones that you might think are not really important, and analyze them for leadership skills from a 3rd person perspective. Also, look for examples that demonstrate maturity.

Siva,

I feel that if you can get a good Gmat, you stand a fair chance at ISB. What appeals to me is that your work ex is entrepreneurial in nature and you have already proved yourself. This should work for you and you have time now to strengthen your extra curricular activities.
