Hi All,

A special thanks to Sabthagiri and Sameer for answering our questions. I have a question for you guys regarding extracurriculars at the workplace. I work with an Australian bank in the IT division managing its Core-Banking Product in around 12 A-PAC countries. The company gives several opportunities to do something different along with work at the work place. For example we have 1 day's volunteer leave, if we wish to do community service. Will this be counted as an extra-curricular at the workplace? I am also driving a career development initiative in my team(size 60) wherein I organise in-house mentoring and counselling for my team members for their career growth.

I am also part of a company-wide group called as Process Champions, whose goal is adoption of best practices and processes for managing technology changes in the organisation. I am also into recruitment of people into my team. None of these are part of my job description, profile or role. So do these qualify as substantial extra-curriculars at the work place? The problem is these sort of activities do not get you any certis or stuff... so I have no way of quantifying these activities except explaining what I have done in detail if and when I get an interview call.

Thanks in advance

Anish

Re: ISB 2009 Aspirants - 28-03-2008, 05:29 AM

Hi folks!!!
First my profile

MBA ICFAI Hyd 05 - 9.2 CGPA
BE Mumbai Uni 03- 63%
XII Hyd 99- 90%
X ICSE 97- 75%

decent extra curricular during MBA - have 6 awards from 3 different management fests but almost nil before that.

Three years of work ex in a mid size IT MNC in consulting, current designation is Senior Consultant. Two years international experience in Malaysia 1.2 years and US 1 year, will be 2 years in US by the time I might join ISB. Since last two years have performed lead roles in SCM domain.

A member of quiz club and social help group in my organization, have been quiz master and spent many hours in various NGO.Also participated in sports events in my company.

I have been contemplating things over the last few months on ways to advance career and get into strategic IT/SCM consulting or Delivery/Account Management and ISB seems to be my best shot at being able to make this transition. The above goals are not frozen but might change or get streamlined if I join ISB. I have only considered IIMA PGPex other than ISB but have not given it a serious thought yet.

My decision on giving ISB a shot is firm and have started working on taking GMAT around june.

My questions to other friends out there are
- Minimal GMAT score to assume I might get a call for interview
- Where do I stand in terms of diversity since my job is not core technical but still involves working with a software product and managing technical deliverables apart from domain related work.. This comes from the fact that IT industry sends the max number of applicants to ISB .
-How many people in current/previous ISB batches are previous MBAs and how does it enhance/reduce my chances or what different will the AdCom do to evaluate my profile compared to non MBA grads.
-Co09 admits and Co08 outgoing alumni could you give us any numbers/estimate of applicants and batch size which ISB is planning for Co10.

Any other views/advice are appreciated.
TIA
Rits

Hi Anish,

I think u r doing a lot in ur office in terms of extra curricular.. U see, the B skools also know that u dont ge a certificate for everything u do in office ( infact u dont get a certificate for anything in office).. and hence they dont look for proofs.. If u think u can convince them that u have actually done these things then u r done.. Thats all thats required.. U have to tell them clearly what u did, how u did, why u did.. they are just checking you out as a person.. There is a limit to how much some one can fake and they are quite adept at catching it.. SO take a chill.. As i said, If u can convince them, ur job is done..

Find ur answer in bold..

No minimum score required..!!!! but a high score never hurt anyones chances..

- Where do I stand in terms of diversity since my job is not core technical but still involves working with a software product and managing technical deliverables apart from domain related work.. This comes from the fact that IT industry sends the max number of applicants to ISB .

Do u want to sell urself as someone unique or as someone who has an aptitiude for MBA and deserves to be in ISB..???

If ur answer is former, then my answer is that ur profile is nothing DIVERSE.. no matter what u throw at ISB they will be able to provide atleast 1 student with almost similar background/work etc etc..

If ur answer is the latter, in that case u dont have to worry a bit about being diverse.. making the classroom diverse is ISB's headache, not the students.. So get cracking on telling them why u deserve to be there and how they will benefit from u being there.. and thats it, u r done..!!

-How many people in current/previous ISB batches are previous MBAs and how does it enhance/reduce my chances or what different will the AdCom do to evaluate my profile compared to non MBA grads.

Well u better have a good reason for doing a 2nd MBA after ur MBA from ICFAI in 05.. As far as Adcom is concerned, i doubt anyone but Mr Ranga Rao will be able to answer that question.. But then again, its about ur aptitude and ur ability to convince them..

-Co09 admits and Co08 outgoing alumni could you give us any numbers/estimate of applicants and batch size which ISB is planning for Co10.

This year the number of admits are 450.. last year it was 425.. No one can give u a number for next year but 450 is a good estimate.. I doubt they will bring the batch size down..

Any other views/advice are appreciated.
TIA

hello all...

my first post on this thread..

I just have a general query and my apologies if it look like a spam...

I have acted in various plays till my 8th class on All India Radio and cleared an exam to be eligible to act in those plays too(i have the certificate for that) which was conducted by AIR only when i was in 6th class. Can this be added in extra curricular??...after that I was never actively involved in plays and this play thing happened to be a long time back

Hi Sameer,

Thanks for that reply. Really reassuring. Now going further I see that many people have a huge amt of work ex and/or have a lot of entrepreneurial skills. Whereas I am just a normal IT bloke who started out like evryone with TCS. However, my desire to do an MBA, especially one in Retail banking, with my exposure to a Core banking implementation in SBI led me to move to this Aussie bank to get more domain exposure. By April 2009 I would have 3yrs and 9 months of experience. Do you think other than a strong GMAT and essays, some more extra-curriculars outside of office are required?

Thanks again
Anish
